The present study was conducted to investigate the incidence of Pasteurella multocida infection in cheju swine from March 1994 to December 1994 isolated organisms were identified by the biochemical properties, cellulose serological type and antibiotic susceptibilities. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the Lungs of 96 pigs with pneumonia(51 %) among 188 slaughtered pigs. The majority of p multocida isolates were identical to those of the standard strains. On the classification of the capsular type of the isolated p multocida it consist of the 88 isolates of type A(91.6%) 2 isolates of type D (2%) and un classified 6 types(6.2%). The majority of the 96 isolates of p multocida highly susceptible to the antibiotics including ampicillin(Am), cephalotin(Ce), erythromycin(Em), gentamycin(Gm), kanamycin(Km), lincomycin(Lm), neomycin(Nm), penicillin(Pc), streptomycin(Sm), solfametoxazol/trimethoprim(Sxt) and tetracycline(Te)
Microorganisms capale of utilizing linear alkylbenzene sulfonates(LAS) as sole carbon source were isolated from industrial effluent by using LAS agar plates. The isolated strains were identified as Salmonella sp(BC-2) and Escherichia sp.(BC-3) from the results of morphological, cultural and biochemical tests. The optimal condition for the growth and biodegradation of LAS was the initial pH 7.0 and LAS concentration 0.1%. The isolated BC-2 and BC-3 strains harbored plasmid and LAS-degrading activity was lost when the plasmids were cured by mitomycin C. The plasmids were transformed into E. coli and transformants have the LAS-degrading activity. Isolated strains were examined for primary biodegradation rate of LAS in the medium by methylene blueactive substance(MBAS) method. Of these isolates, BC-2 and BC-3 strains degradated LAS upto 60% and high resistant to CdCl$_{2}$ and HgCl$_{2}$. Isolated strains were sensitive to chloramphenicol, kanamycin, rifampicin, streptomycin and tetracycline but resistant to ampicillin and lincomycin.] Its minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) for ampicillin was more than 1500 $\mu $g/ml.
Little is known to data about the in vitro activity of antimicrobial agents aganist Brucella cams (B cams) isolated from Korea. Our study aimed at determining the in vitro activities of 15 antimicrobial agents against 3 isolates and 52 isolates of B cams from dogs in 1994 and 2002, respectively. In minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) study, minocycline and doxycycline showed the lowest MICs ( < 0.06-0.5 ug/ml). Gentamicin, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and rifampin showed MICs in the range of less than 1 ug/ml. Lincomycin and sulfisox azole showed the highest MICs ( > 32 ug/ml). Interestingly, MICs of macrolides (erythromycin, spiramycin, tylosin) against 52 isolates in 2002 were 16-64 times higher than that of 3 isolates in 1994. In minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) study, gentamicin, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin showed the lowest MBCs [0.12-1 ug/ml (1-2 times higher than MIC)], but minocycline and doxycycline showed the highest MBCs [8-32 ug/ml (128 times higher than MIC)]. Rifampin showed the MBCs in the range from 2 to 4 ug/ml (2-4 times higher than MIC).
Ten isolates of Verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) were detected in slaughtered cattle and investigated their phenotypic characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility. None of the isolates was positive for eae gene. Only one isolate was positive for uidA gene. Eight out of ten isolates of VTEC were originated from broker's cattle. Thus microbiological monitoring for broker farms should be performed to minimize VTEC contamination. In the antimicrobial susceptibility test, all the isolates were highly resistant to bacitracin and lincomycin whilst they are susceptible to apramycin and neomycin.
Immunomodulatory feed additives might offer alternatives to antimicrobial growth promoters in pig production. This experiment was designed to determine the effects of dietary galacto-mannan-oligosaccharide (GMOS) and chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) supplementation on the immune response in early-weaned piglets. Forty 15-day-old piglets (Duroc$\times$Landrace$\times$Yorkshire) with an average live body weight of $5.6{\pm}0.51kg$ were weaned and randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups that were fed maize-soybean meal diets containing either basal, 110 mg/kg of lincomycin, 250 mg/kg of COS or 0.2% GMOS, respectively, over a 2-week period. Another six piglets of the same age were sacrificed on the same day at the beginning of the study for sampling, in order to obtain baseline values. Interleukin (IL)-1${\beta}$gene expression in peripheral blood monocytes, jejunal mucosa and lymph nodes, as well as serum levels of IL-1${\beta}$ IL-2 and IL-6, IgA, IgG, and IgM, were evaluated for 5 pigs from each group at 15 and 28 days of age. The results indicate that weaning stress resulted in decreases in serum antibody and cytokine levels. Dietary supplementation with GMOS or COS enhanced (p<0.05) IL-1${\beta}$gene expression in jejunal mucosa and lymph nodes, as well as serum levels of IL-1${\beta}$ IL-2, IL-6, IgA, IgG and IgM compared to supplementation with lincomycin. These findings suggest that GMOS or COS may enhance the cell-mediated immune response in early-weaned piglets by modulating the production of cytokines and antibodies, which shows that GMOS or COS have different effects than the antibiotic on animal growth and health.
In this study, lactic acid bacteria with high angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor activity were isolated from Korean fermented food, such as kimchi and salted seafood. The strain HLJ59, isolated from salted shrimp showed the highest angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor activity in DeMan Rogosa Sharpe broth. Optimum growth temperature of Lactobacillus brevis HLJ59 was at $34^{\circ}C$. Acid treatment at pH 3.0 for 1.5 h decreased cell viability from $9.9{\times}10^8$ CFU/ml to $3.11{\times}10^4$ CFU/ml. The bile extract concentration of 0.3%, 0.5%, and 1.0% in MRS broth did not inhibit the growth of HLJ59. Isolated strain HLJ59 showed more sensibility to amikacin, gentamycin, neomycin, streptomycin, kanamycin, cefmetazole, cephalothin, ampicillin, ticarcillin, sulbactam+ampicillin, amoxicillin+clavulanic acid (AMC), tetracycline, and sulfamethoxazole+trime thoprim (SXT) as compare to other 7 different antibiotics. However, it showed more resistance to cefoxatin, ceftnaxone, penicillin, ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, lincomycin, and chloramphenicol.
The properties and DNA structures of R plasmids differ depending on the species of the fish-pathogens Aeromonas hydrophila, A. salmonicida, Edwardsiella tarda, Enterococcus seriolicida, Pasteurella piscicida and Vibrio anguillarum. However, some R plasmids with the same resistance markers in similar DNA structures were found in A. hydrophila and E. tarda, as well as in A. hydrophila and A. salmonicida. R plasmids from V. anguillarum were classified into three groups according to their DNA structures. The first group was detected before 1977, the second from 1980 to 1983, and the third from 1989 to 1991. R plasmids have been retained within P. piscieida having the same DNA structures and detected at various locations and times. E. seriolicida strains carrying the same R plasmids, which were encoded with resistance to macrolide antibiotics(MLs), lincomycin(LIM), and TC, and to MLs, LIM, and CP. were distributed in yellowtail farms in various districts. The chloramphenicol-resistance(cat) gene of the R plasmids of P. piscicida was classified as CAT type I. The cat of the R plasmids of E, tarda. A. salmonicida was classified as type II. The cat of R plasmids of V. anguillarum was classified into two types. One type detected before 1977, was classified as CAT IV and the other type, detected after 1980, was classified as CAT II. Tetracycline-resistance (tet) V. anguillarum, isolated before 1977 and after 1981, was classified as Tet B and Tet G, respectively. The class D tet gene was widely distributed in R plasmids from fish-pathogens A. hydrophila, E. tarda, P. piscicida, and also V. anguillarum isolated after 1989.
Acinetobacter sp. B-W producing siderophore, 2, 3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) was analyzed for plasmid content. Strain B-W harbored plasmid of 20 kb in size. Growth at $43^{\circ}C$ was effective in producing mutant cured of plasmid of strain B-W. This mutant lost the ability to produce 2, 3-DHB. Formation of siderophore halos on the chrome azurol S (CAS) agar medium was not detected by cured strain B-W. pHs of supernatants of wild type strain B-W and cured mutant grown in glucose and $MnSO_4$ containing medium at $28^{\circ}C$ for 3 days were 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. Antibiotic resistance against ampicillin, actinomycin D, bacitracin, lincomycin, and vancomycin was lost in cured mutant. Plasmid curing of strain B-W resulted in drastic reduction of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of several antibiotics. E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ was transformed with plasmid isolated from strain B-W. The transformant E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ harbored a plasmid of the same molecular size as that of the donor plasmid. Transformant E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ produced 2, 3-DHB and contained antibiotic resistant ability. Thus a single plasmid of 20 kb seemed to be involved in 2, 3-DHB production. Genes encoding resistance to antibiotics were also supposed to be located on this plasmid.

Culture conditions of L. plantarum TJ-LP-002, the garlic resistant strain isolated from pakimchi (green onion kimchi), were investigated for the use of feed additives. Acetic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, and tartaric acid were detected in the culture supernatant, and especially the concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid significantly increased during cultivation. The antimicrobial activity of L. plantarum TJ-LP-002 was not affected by proteases, calatase or cellulase, which showed that the antimicrobial activity might be due to the production of acids rather than proteinaceous antimicrobial substances. L. plantarum TJ-LP-002 was resistant to neomycin sulfate, spectinomycin dihydrochloride, and lincomycin hydrochloride, sensitive to streptomycin sulfate, and intermediate resistant to ampicillin trihydrate, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, tetracycline hydrochloride, and kanamycin sulfate. The optimum initial pH of medium, fermentation temperature and time for the cell growth and antibacterial activity were pH 7.0, 30${^{\circ}C}$ and 24hr, respectively. The optimal composition of culture medium for the cell growth and antimicrobial activity was 3%(w/v) glucose as a carbon source, 3%(w/v) yeast extract as a nitrogen source, and manganese sulfate and ammonium citrate as inorganic salts. The combinatorial supplementation of these inorganic salts, rather than sole addition as an inorganic salt, resulted in better antibacterial activity.
The present study was conducted to investigate biochemical, serologic, and pathogenic characteristic of E. rhusiopathiae isolated from the cases of acute septicemic swine erysipelas in Youngnam provinces during the period from June 1988 to September 1990. The majority of biochemical and cultural properties of E. rhusiopathiae isolated from pigs affected with acute erysipelas were identical to those of the standard strain employed. All of the 45 isolates were serotype la. All isolates were highly susceptible to penicillin G, lincomycin, cephalothin, ampicillin, erythromycin (MIC : 0.025-0.78IU or ${\mu}g$ / ml ), and moderately susceptible to oleandomycin, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol (MIC : 0.78-25${\mu}g$ / ml ). Kanamycin and sulfadimethoxine showed no activity against the isolates(MIC : >400${\mu}g$ / ml ). The MICs of dihydrostreptomycin presented two distribution peaks ; of 45 strains, 5(11.1%) were resistant to dihydrostreptomycin(MIC : 400${\mu}g$ / ml ). All of 5 selected isolates were pathogenic for mite and $LD_{50}$ was $3.7{\times}10^3$viable cells. Mice immunized subcutaneously with live vaccine did not die after challenge to virulent isolates of E. rhusiopathiae.
