Structural Performance of 800 MPa High-Strength Steel Members and Application to Highrise and Mega Building Structures

  • The use of high-strength steels in construction of highrise and mega building structures can bring about many technological advantages from fabrication to erection. However, key design criteria such as local and lateral stability in current steel design specifications were developed based on tests of ordinary steels which have stress-strain characteristics very different from that of high strength steels. A series of tests on 800 MPa tensile strength steel (HSA800) members are summarized in this paper which were conducted to investigate the appropriateness of extrapolating current ordinary-steel based design criteria to high strength steels. 800 MPa I-shape beam specimens designed according to flange local buckling (FLB) criteria of the AISC Specification developed a sufficient strength for elastic design and a marginal rotation capacity for plastic design. It is shown that, without introducing distinct and significant yield plateau to the stress-strain property of high-strength steel, it is inherently difficult to achieve a high rotation capacity even if all the current stability limits are met. 800 MPa I-shape beam specimens with both low and high warping rigidity exhibited sufficient lateral torsional buckling (LTB) strength. HSA800 short-column specimens with various edge restraint exhibited sufficient local buckling strength under uniform compression and generally outperformed ordinary steel specimens. The experimental P-M strength was much higher than the AISC nominal P-M strength. The measured residual stresses indicated that the impact of residual stress on inelastic buckling of high-strength steel is less. Cyclic seismic test results showed that HSA800 members have the potential to be used as non-ductile members or members with limited ductility demand in seismic load resisting systems. Finally, recent applications of 800 MPa high strength steel to highrise and mega building structures in Korea are briefly presented.

진동대 실험을 통한 원형 합성 기둥의 내진 성능 평가 (Seismic performance evaluation of circular composite columns by shaking table test)

  • 합성 교각의 설계에서 요구 내진성능을 만족하기 위한 철근상세 규정이 명확하지 않은 측면이 있다. 합성 교각은 단면치수를 감소시키고 지진하중하에서 기둥의 연성을 개선하기 위해 제안되었다. 이 논문에서는 400mm 직경을 가진 단일 강재를 콘크리트에 매입한 합성기둥 부재를 5기 제작하여 합성기둥의 내진성능을 연구하였다. 진동대 실험과 유사동적 실험이 수행되었는데 근단층지반운동을 고려한 축소모형의 구조적 거동이 평가되었다. 실험 변수는 횡철근의 간격, 주철근의 겹침이음, 매입 강재 단면으로 설정하였다. 진동대 실험에 의해 평가된 변위연성도가 유사동적 실험에 비해 적게 나타났고 한정연성설계, 주철근의 겹침 이음 50%를 가진 부재가 기준 부재에 비해서 낮은 연성도를 보였다. 강재비는 극한강도에 영향을 미치고 겹침이음과 횡철근 비의 감소는 변위능력을 감소시켰다. 합성 교각의 상세에 따른 에너지 소산능력의 차이는 뚜렷하게 나타나지 않았다.

Experimental study on seismic behavior of two-storey modular structure

  • Due to the unique construction method of modular steel buildings (MSBs) with units prefabricated fully off the site and assembled quickly on the site, the inter-module connection for easy operation and overall performance of the system were key issues. However, it was a lack of relevant research on the system-level performance of MSBs. This study investigated the seismic performance of two-storey modular steel structure with a proposed vertical rotary inter-module connection. Three full-scale quasi-static tests, with and without corrugated steel plate and its combination, were carried out to evaluate and compare their seismic behaviour. The hysteretic performance, skeleton curves, ductile performance, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and deformation pattern were clarified. The results showed that good ductility and plastic deformation ability of such modular steel structures. Two lateral-force resistance mechanisms with different layout combinations were also discussed in detail. The corrugated steel plate could significantly improve the lateral stiffness and bearing capacity of the modular steel structure. The cooperative working mechanism of modules and inter-module connections was further analyzed. When the lateral stiffness of upper and lower modular structures was close, limited bending moment transfer may be considered for the inter-module connection. While a large lateral stiffness difference existed initially between the upper and lower structures, an obvious gap occurred at the inter-module connection, and this gap may significantly influence the bending moments transferred by the inter-module connections. Meanwhile, several design recommendations of inter-module connections were also given for the application of MSBs.

주철근 겹침이음된 실물교각의 횡구속 정도에 따른 내진성능 평가 (Seismic Performance Evaluation of Full-Sized RC Bridge Piers with tap-Spliced longitudinal Steels according to Lateral Confinement)

  • 철근콘크리트 교각의 시공시 소성힌지구간에서 주철근 겹침이음은 내진성능면에서 바람직하지 않으나 불가피하게 시공되는 경우가 있었다. 특히, 1992년 도로교표준시방서의 내진설계 기준이 마련되기 이전에 설계 시공된 대부분의 철근콘크리트 교각은 소성힌지구간에 주철근을 겹침이음 하였으며, 이들은 휨에 대한 소성영역에서의 거동에 직접적인 영향을 미친다. 본 연구에서는 직경 1.2m, 형상비 4.0의 휨파괴가 예상되는 비내진 및 한정연성시험체를 8기 제작하여 준정적(Quasi-Static)실험을 통한 철근콘크리트(RC) 교각의 소성힌지구간내의 주철근 겹침이음과 횡방향구속력이 내진성능에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 실험체의 변수로서는 $0\%,\;50\%,\;100\%$의 주철근 겹침이음, 2종류의 횡구속철근비 및 띠철근 형상을 선택하였다. 연구결과 주철근 겹침이음 정도에 따라 철근콘크리트 교각의 내진성능은 급격히 저하되었으며, 겹침이음이 없는 한정연성설계된 시험체의 경우 높은 내진성능을 발휘하였다. 연구결과에 따라 중저진지역에서 겹침이음된 주철근 교각의 내진성능을 위한 적절한 횡방향철근량을 제안하였다.
