Based on three-dimensional (3-D) FE limit analyses, this paper provides plastic limit, collapse and instability load solutions for pipe bends under combined pressure and in-plane bending. The plastic limit loads are determined from FE limit analyses based on elastic-perfectly plastic materials using the small geometry change option, and the FE limit analyses using the large geometry change option provide plastic collapse loads (using the twice-elastic-slope method) and instability loads. For the bending mode, both closing bending and opening bending are considered, and a wide range of parameters related to the bend geometry is considered. Based on the FE results, closed-form approximations of plastic limit and collapse load solutions for pipe bends under combined pressure and bending are proposed.

In the present paper, approximate plastic limit load solutions fur pipe bends under combined internal pressure and bending are obtained from detailed three-dimensional (3-D) FE limit analyses based on elastic-perfectly plastic materials with the small geometry change option. The present FE results show that existing limit load solutions for pipe bends are lower bounds but can be very different from the present FE results in some cases, particularly for bending. Accordingly closed-form approximations are proposed for pipe bends under combined pressure and in-plane bending based on the present FE results. The proposed limit load solutions would be a basis of defective pipe bends and be useful to estimate non-linear fracture mechanics parameters based on the reference stress approach.

Limit load of pressure bearing structures was reviewed in this article. By means of the finite element analysis, limit load of pressurized cylinder with nozzle was taken as an example. Stress classification method and Elastic-plastic finite element analysis combining with limit load determination methods were used to determine limit load of cylinder with nozzle. Comparison of limit load determined by different methods, the results indicated that limit load determined by linearization method was the smallest. Limit load determined by twice elastic slope criterion was the nearest than experimental results. Elastic-plastic finite element analysis had comparably computational precision, but required time consuming. And then the requirements of computer processing and storage capacity by power system became higher and higher. Most of criteria for limit load estimation included any human factors based on a certain substantive characteristics of experimental results. The reasonable criterion should be objective and operational.

The present paper provides plastic limit load solutions of axial and circumferential through-wall cracked pipes based on detailed three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) limit analysis using elastic-perfectly-plastic behavior. As a loading condition, axial tension, global bending moment, internal pressure, combined tension and bending and combined internal pressure and bending are considered for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes, while only internal pressure is considered for axial through-wall cracked pipes. Especially, more emphasis is given for through-wall cracked pipes subject to combined loading. Comparisons with existing solutions show a large discrepancy in short through-wall crack (both axial and circumferential) for internal pressure. In the case of combined loading, the FE limit analyses results show thickness effect on limit load solutions. Furthermore, the plastic limit load solution for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under bending is applied to derive plastic $\eta\;and\;{\gamma}$-factor of testing circumferential through-wall cracked pipes to estimate fracture toughness. Being based on detailed 3-D FE limit analysis, the present solutions are believed to be meaningful fur structural integrity assessment of through-wall cracked pipes.
In accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel (B&PV) Code Sec.XI Appendix. G, a postulated crack is located at the beltline of a reactor pressure vessel because the neutron flux at the beltline is higher than elsewhere. This means that the distance between the core and the semi-spherical bottom head is longer than the distance between the core and the cylindrical beltline. However, several Small and Medium sized Reactors have bottom heads with diverse shapes, including dished or semi-elliptical shapes, to satisfy the requirement and performance. So, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of crack location on Pressure-Temperature limit curve. To do this, two types of postulated crack location, such as beltline and semi-elliptical bottom head, were adopted to derive the Pressure-Temperature limit curve. Also, parametric studies for neutron flux, crack shape and so on were performed. As a result, core critical temperature of semi-elliptical bottom head is found to higher than that of beltline even when they have same values of thickness and neutron flux. This result will be useful to enhance the understanding of Pressure-Temperature limit curve.
Determining limit load for a pressure bearing structure using elastic-plastic finite element analysis was computationally very expensive. A series of robust methods using elastic modulus adjustment techniques (EMAP) to identify the limit load directly were proposed. The numerical implementation of the robust method had the potential to be an attractive alternative to elastic-plastic finite element analysis since it was simple, and required less computational effort and computer storage space. Another attractive feature was that the method provided a go/no go criterion for the limit load, whereas the results of an elastic-plastic analysis were often difficult to interpret near the limit load since it came from human sources. To explore the performance of the method further, it was applied to a number of configurations that include two-dimensional and three-dimensional effects. In this study, limit load of cylinder with nozzle was determined by the robust methods.
Explosive characteristics of the city gas were determined by using the gas explosion apparatues. The explosive range is determined between lower explosive limit of 5.0% and upper explosive limit of 15.3% at atmosphere and even though the oxygen concentration is decreased, lower explosive limit is not changed, but upper explosive limit is rapidly decreased. The minimum oxygen for combustion is determined 10%. The maximum explosion pressure is determined 5.72$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the maximum rate of explosion pressure rise is oxygen concentration of 12% to determined 160.12$\textrm{cm}^2{\cdot}$sec.
In order to examine the explosion risk of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, we experimentally studied the explosion limit, explosion pressure, and rate of increase of the explosion pressure at different oxygen concentrations. The lower explosion limit was 3.2% at a temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, and the oxygen concentration was 40 to 70%. The upper explosion limit was 4.5% and the lower explosion limit was 4.0% at an oxygen concentration of 21%.The maximum explosion pressure of 2-ethylhexanoic acid was 1.4161 MPa at an oxygen concentration of 70%, and the rate of increase of the explosion pressure was 62.692 MPa/s at this concentration.
On the basis of Hoek-Brown failure criterion, a numerical solution for the shape of collapsing block in the rectangular cavity subjected to seepage forces is obtained by upper bound theorem of limit analysis. The seepage forces obtained from the gradient of excess pore pressure distribution are taken as external loadings in the limit analysis, and the pore pressure is easily calculated with pore pressure coefficient. Thus the seepage force is incorporated into the upper bound analysis as a work rate of external force. The upper solution of the shape of collapsing block is derived by virtue of variational calculation. In order to verify the validity of the method proposed in the paper, the result when the pore pressure coefficient equals zero, and only hydrostatic pressure is taken into consideration, is compared with that of previous work. The results show good effectiveness in calculating the collapsing block shape subjected to seepage forces. The influence of parameters on the failure mechanisms is investigated.
