Because many light rail transit systems are mainly operated in the downtown areas of a large cities and the congestion areas, there are many steep gradients and sharp radius sections in that lines. As that reasons above, light rail vehicles are equipped with differential gear units between traction motors and final reduction gear units. In this paper, the configurations and the interferences of 2K-H I type Planetary gear train, which is applicable for light rail vehicles and based on various differential gear units, are studied. The ranges of addendum modification coefficients which would not lead to interferences is analyzed, and optimal addendum modification coefficients among these ranges are presented, which generate the maximum efficiency of planetary gear drives and differential gear unit as pressure angles, speed ratios,

The wide spread of DC electric railway systems such as urban rapid transits including heavy rail and light rail transits has significant ramification as the stray currents from return conductor rails can cause the electrochemical interference, that is, the electrolytic corrosion of both rails and outside underground metallic infrastructures. The immature understanding of either the railway authority who is responsible for establishing the necessary provisions at the design stage or the affected parties makes it difficult to prepare the optimum range of solutions for the long-pending interference problem. In advanced countries, however, numerous assessment studies have been carried out on the stray current interference, by which protective standards and regulations are provided under the collaboration and agreement of the related parties. In this paper, we introduce a european standard from IEC, namely, "IEC 62128-2:2003 railway applications-fixed installations -part 2: protective provisions against the effects of stray currents caused by d.c. traction systems" and a "Code of Practice" produced by Victorian electrolysis committee (VEC) based on "Electricity Safety Act 1998" and "Electricity safety (stray current corrosion) regulations 1999" of Victoria state, Australia.
Unattended Train operation(UTO) requires higher safety target than other systems, since all train operations are automatic. The system provider to deliver without accident or failure, and the operator to transport passengers without accident by putting all trains supplied, including them, into service. Safety rates without such failures can be represented as indicators of RAMS, among which availability is continuously controllable to achieve the target, with a clear target. Availability is often required by the licensee from the initial stage of the project to demonstrate that the request for proposal (RFP) is usually specified and to maintain separate availability targets at the operational stage. In particular, unlike unmanned operation light rail in complex systems, simple formulas are often presented to facilitate verification at each stage. This paper presents this method of usability calculation in an integrated manner at all levels and analyzes the existing usability values to ensure reliability of the availability formula for integrated use in unmanned light rail systems.

These days, research related to Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology is being widely considered. ITS is inevitable for future transportation systems to reduce accidents, congestion, and offer a smooth flow of traffic. The use of Visible Light Communication (VLC) in ITS systems has been considered widely because of its EMC/EMI free and LED infrastructure reusable properties. Among the VLC schemes, this study analyzed the performance of the Color Shift Keying (CSK) scheme under a Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) downlink scenario to verify the capability of CSK as a communication tool for ITS. By modeling daylight noise using the modified Blackbody radiation model, this study examined the performance of V2I VLC under daytime conditions. The relationship between BER, the communication distance, and the amount of ambient-light noises under the pre-described V2I scenario were determined by simulations.
The highest priority for passenger safety should be system performance guarantee in LRT(Light Rail Transit) based on a fully-automated manless metro system. In order to realize spotless manless automatic operating system through system performance guarantee, the role of SE(Systems Engineering) is of utmost importance. Currently, SE initiatives for local LRT projects are not cost-effective and heavily dependent on overseas firms due mostly to the lack of knowledge and experience in SE. This paper aims to review the appropriateness of cases of SE implementation on the basis of LRT projects either in progress or in the introduction stage to local market by examining, comparing and analyzing the applied cases.
In order to scheme the optimal assumption that satisfies the travel demand, it should be review the elements that affect on determining the headway, which are signal systems, line shape, vehicle(Light Rail Transit) performance, and so on. When applying the conventional signal systems, including Fixed Block System and Moving Block System, It was confirmed whether or not satisfy the requirements of target line with the way of a numerical formula reviewing and Train performance Simulation on the main line, station, depot, and so forth. Therefore, it should be used as references that decide target line and each sub-system after identifying the compliances for Minimum Headway to Moving Block System.
The brake systems of the rolling stocks are generally consisted of electrical and mechanical brake systems. Because of its inherent structure of the each brake system, the electrical brake system is mainly used at the high speed range while the mechanical brake system is used at the relatively lower speed range. It is desirable for the rolling stocks to apply the entire electrical brake system. However, since the brake force from electric brake system is not enough to stop the rolling stock within the legal stop distance. Therefore, the mechanical brake system is indispensable to rolling stocks. In general, the vast majority of the world trains are equipped with mechanical braking systems which use compressed air as the force to push block on to wheels or pads on to discs. These mechanical systems are known as air brake or pneumatic brakes. For the air brake system, basically huge scale air compressor is equipped and the long pipe line is complexively connected. Since mass of these air brake components, it is difficult to be a light weight equipment and the long pipe line raise the maintenance problem. In order to overcome these problems of air brake system, the hydraulic brake system is proposed in this research. The hydraulic brake system makes the whole weight of brake equipment be light and large braking force can be applied. Therefore, in this research, the validity and advantages of applying the hydraulic brake system are reviewed.

In Japan, however, numerous assessment studies have been carried out on the stray current interference, by which protective guidelines are provided by "Electrolysis Committee". In this paper, we review a guide book from "Tokyo Electrolysis Committee", namely, "Protective Methods for Stray Current Corrosion".
When the electric motor car was first introduced, an engineer, responsible for the work related to operation and a conductor for the announcement and management of entrances and the other services like as monitoring the passengers in the platforms used to take together the train for passengers' safe. As new technologies developed and the urban transit system had the automatic driving facilities, automatic door switch and broadcasting systems, to solve the financial problems, most subway systems introduced the one-man operation system. To curtail the operating expense through automatic control and operation for the economical efficiency, the crewless driving system was introduced abroad around 1970 on the light weight train and Japan started the crewless driving system in 2005, Germany started it in June 2008. We examine system requirements of the system and methods to construct safe systems that would be introduced, suitable for one-man operation system or crewless driving system through the surveys and analysis of driving state and the systems.
To facilitate the base station planning in high speed railway communication systems, it is necessary to consider the functional relationships between the base station transmit power and space parameters such as train velocity and cell radius. Since these functions are able to present some inherent system properties determined by its spatial topology, they will be referred to as the power-space functions in this paper. In light of the fact that the line-of-sight path persists the most power of the received signal of each passing train, this paper considers the average transmission rate and bounds on power-space functions based on the additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN) model. As shown by Monte Carlo simulations, using AWGN channel instead of Rician channel introduces very small approximation errors, but a tractable mathematical framework and insightful results. Particularly, lower bounds and upper bounds on the average transmission rate, as well as transmit power as functions of train velocity and cell radius are presented in this paper. It is also proved that to maintain a fixed amount of service or a fixed average transmission rate, the transmit power of a base station needs to be increased exponentially, if the train velocity or cell radius is increased, respectively.
