  • Purified myofibrils were prepared from ante-mortem stress and control lots of Taiwan country chicken breast and thigh muscles at death and afler storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 0, 1, 2, 3, and 7 days post-mortem. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polycrylamide gel electrophoresis (3.2%) and densitometer were used to examine the effect of ante-mortem stress and control storage of muscle on titin and nebulin. Results indicated that titin and nebulin were more rapidly degraded in the control and the ante-mortem stress light muscles than in the control and ante-mortem dark muscles of Taiwan country chicken. In contrast, nebulin was shown to be more resistance to degradation in the ante-mortem stress dark muscle than in the control light muscle.

  • An intensive field study was carried out during Aug. 1993 in Seoul to study the characteristics of summertime visibility and diurnal trend of ionic composition of ambient particles. A transmissometer, nephelometer with heated and unheated inlets, PM3 fine particle sampler, and cascade impactor were used to measure optical and particle properties of ambient air. During this study period, a weak smog episode has occurred. Light scattering by particles is the most dominant factor on total light extinction. The effect of light absorption by particles in Seoul is much higher than other major cities in U.S.A. throughout the summer and fall with relatively constant values. The effect of water on $b_{sp}$ was small during the period. The particle size distribution shows a typical bimodal one. Sulfate, ammonium, chloride, and nitrate are the major chemical species in fine fraction aerosols, about 30% of toral mass concentration. Concentraion of sulfate is higher during the daytime while those of nitrate and chloride are higher during the nighttime. Ammonium concentration is constant through the daytime.

  • A number of antibiotics and organic compounds were tested for their effect on the multoplication of tobacco mosaic virus(TMV) in floating leaf discs. 1)Among six antibiotics tested, kanamycin sulfate showed 24% or more inhibition to TMV multiplication under these experimental conditions. Aureomycin hydrochloride and chloramphenicol showed 19% and 14% inhibition respectively. 2)For screening of organic compounds two environments were used, a diffuse day- light environment (25 foot-candles and laboratory temperature) and an artificial light environment for 12 hours per day(300 foot-candles at 4 to $5^{\circ}C above laboratory temperature). A wide range of organic compounds increased virus multoplication in the diffuse daylight environment but had less effect, or ingibited virus multiplication, in the artificial light environment. 3)The following compounds were among the most effective in increasing TMV multiplication: glucose-1-phosphate, L-aspartic acid, glucose, and 5-bromouracil. The following compoumds were most effective in inhibiting TMT multiplication: thiouracil, uracil, DL-isoleucine, L-leucine, and zinc chloride.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of light intensity variation on the polymerization rate of composite resin using IB system(experimental equipment designed by Dr. IB Lee) by which real-time volumetric change of composite can be measured. Methods: Three commercial composites [Z100(Z1), AeliteFil(AF), SureFil(SF)] were photopolymerized with Variable Intensity Polymerizer unit (Bisco, U.S.A.) under the variable light intensity (75/150/225/300/375/450㎽$^2$) during 20sec.(omitted)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the HRV(Heart Rate Variability) to visual and auditory stimulation. We analysed psychological effect and HRV of music, light, and music with light. The results show that HRV pattern is significantly related to the psychological effect, and HRV spectrum is useful to extract more information when various stimulation are presented.

  • ABSTRACT -- Recently, a method of magnetically-enhanced discharge columns is considered to increase the luminous efficacy of discharge lamps, which is based upon the face that the diffusion motion of charged particles in the discharge column strongly depends on the applied magnetic fields. This study investigates the effect of applied transverse magnetic fields on the light output of low-pressure Hg-Ar discharge. As a result, it is found that the electric field in the positive column increases according to the applied megnetic field, which causes an increase in the total light output. And this effect is much more pronounced upon the spectral line originating form the higher levels.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of resin and filler type on the compressive strength of light-activated composite resins. Experimental composite resins containing either amorphous spherical silica or crushed quartz in two matrix resins of BisGMA/TEGDMA and UTMA/TEGDMA were prepared and the specimens of 3 m in diameter and 6m in length were made. Compressive test was subjected to a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min, and the fracture surFaces were examined by SEM. The compressive strength of UTMA-based composite resin was higher than that of BisGMA-based composite resin. The loading rate of spherical silica was higher than that of crushed silica when the size dis- tribution of fillers was same. Strength decrease of Bis-GMA-based composite resin was severer than that of UTMA-based composite resin in a $37^{\circ}$c water environment. Fracture surface showed that the composite resin failure developed along the matrix resin and the filler/resin interface region.

  • Type Ia Supernovae are known as one of the most reliable standard candle regarding to our understanding their explosion mechanism. Recently NIR photometry of SN Ia shows us better promise on the distance measurement. NIR peak luminosity is relatively independent of light curve shape and effect of extinction is obviously less than in optical wavelengths. Among NIR bands, Y-band photometry is suggested to have less scatter and reduced reddening effect than other NIR wavelengths, furthermore it is still unexplored regime to verify its utility. Here we report Y-band light curve analysis of M101 SN Ia to investigate how Y-band can help us to determine accurate distance to the galaxy.

  • In this paper, we propose the basic measurement method of a 3D digitizer using a CCD camera in detail. In the localization measurement with a CCD camera, the effect of the background light and the sensitivity consideration are always problems in realizing a high precision. In this research, a new measurement principle is proposed in which the pulse compression technique known in radar is used to eliminate the effect of background light even under a low intensity light source, and the coordinate values on the CCD camera image plane are determined accurately. From the quantitative evaluation of the S/N ratio improvement and the fundamental experiment, it is verified that a substantial improvement in the S/N ratio is realized for both the background noise and the pixel noise and that a resolution of less than the pixel is sufficiently possible.

  • Visible-light-driven wide bandgap semiconductor photocatalysts were commonly developed via doping or coupling with another narrow bandgap metal oxide. However, these approaches required extra processing. The aim of study was to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of narrow bandgap $WO_x$ nanoparticles. A mixture of $WO_2$ and $WO_3$ nanoparticles were synthesized using solution precipitation technique. The photodegradation of RhB by these nanoparticles more effective in UV light than in visible light. In antibacterial susceptibility assay, $WO_x$ nanoparticles demonstrated good antibacterial against Gram-positive bacteria. The cell wall of bacterial was the main determinant in antibacterial effect other than $W^{4+}/W^{6+}$ ions and ROS.
