This paper introduces the use of a crown-shaped (CR) lens to effectively diffuse the light from a light-emitting diode (LED) without any loss in the light intensity, in contrast to polymer-bulb-type diffusers. The diffusion lens was designed based on the Snell's law, which describes the physical path of a ray passing through the boundary between different media. CR lenses were fabricated by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) casting and UV-embossing processes, which used a pre-designed metal mold and UV-curable resin, respectively. Through experiments and optical evaluations, it was verified that the newly proposed CR lens not only decreased the vertical light strength and glare effect from an LED light source but also improved the diffusion characteristics while maintaining the quality of the LED's light intensity.
One of methods to increase the efficiency of a dye-sensitized solar cell(DSC) is the effective usage of the incident light. It can be controlled by using a light scattering layer. The light scattering effect makes that the optical path length of incident light to DSC increases. And then, the photocurrent and the efficiency is increased because of the increase of dye adsorption and the abundant amount of the light. In this study, we apply the light scattering layer to DSC by using two $TiO_2$ pastes that have different particle sizes. As a result, the photocurrent increases and the total efficiency is also increases in the case of using large-sized $TiO_2$ particle as the light scattering layer.
When reserpine-producing cell strains of Rauwolfia serpentina were transferred from the dark to the light irradiation, the production of reserpine was extremely enhanced whereas the cell growth was suppressed. In an incubation period of 20 days, the most effective culture condition for reserpine production was the combination of 8 days of dark culture and following 12 days of light culture. The time courses of both cell growth and reserpine production were measured in vitro in order to clarify the effect of wave length range of light on the biosynthesis of reserpine. Although the growth of cultured cells which had been incubated under continuous red, yellow, and green lights, respectively, was similar to that of the cultured cells subcultured in the dark. The cells cultured under red light irradiation produced less reserpine than dark-grown cultures. Both blue and near-ultraviolet light inhibited the growth of cultured cells. The production of reserpine was strikingly enhanced by blue light, but was strongly inhibited by near-ultraviolet light.
It has been reported that flashing light enhances microalgal biomass productivity and overall photosynthetic efficiency. The algal growth kinetics and oxygen production rates under flashing light with various flashing frequencies (5Hz-37 kHz) were compared with those under equivalent continuous light in photobioreactors. A positive flashing light effect was observed with flashing frequencies over 1kHz. The oxygen production rate under conditions of flashing light was slightly higher than that under continuius ligth. The cells under the hight, particularly at higher cell concentrations. When 37kHz flashing light was applied to an LED-based photobioreactor, the concentration was higher than that obtained under continuous light by about 20%. Flashing light may be a reasonable solution to overcome mutual shading, particularly in high-density algal cultures.
Traffic lights at night are usually framed in the image as bright regions bigger than the real size due to glow effect. Moreover, the colors of lighting region saturate to white. So it is difficult to distinguish between different traffic lights at night. Many related studies have tried to decrease the glow effect in the process of capturing images. Some studies drastically decreased the shutter time of the camera to reduce the adverse effect by the glow. However, this makes the video too dark. This study proposes a new idea which utilizes the glow effect. It examines the outer radial region of traffic light. It presents an algorithm to discriminate the color of traffic light by the analysis of the outer radial region. The advantage of the proposed method is that it can recognize traffic lights in the image captured by an ordinary black box camera. Experimental results using seven short videos show the performance of traffic light recognition reporting the precision of 96.4% and the recall of 98.2%. These results show that the proposed method is valid and effective.

In fish, light (photoperiod, intensity and spectra) is main regulator in many physiological actions including growth. We investigate the effect of light spectra on the somatic growth and growth-related gene expression in the rearing tiger puffer. Fish was reared under different light spectra (blue, green and red) for 8 weeks. Fish body weight and total length were promoted when reared under green light condition than red light condition. Expression of somatostatins (ss1 and ss2) in brain were showed higher expression under red light condition than green light condition. The ss3 mRNA was observed only higher expression in blue light condition. Expression of growth hormone (gh) in pituitary was detected no different levels between experimental groups. However, the fish of green light condition group was showed more high weight gain and feed efficiency than other light condition groups. Our present results suggest that somatic growth of tiger puffer is induced under green light condition because of inhibiting ss mRNA expression in brain by effect of green wavelength.
The modeling of interception and absorption of light was studied in plant canopies at Mt. Kwanak. Followering results were obtained. Light intensity passing through the stacked leaves is attenuated exponentially. This phenomenon seems to be more clearly applied to the plant canopies, if they have large cumulative leaf area and are matured densely. Light interception and absorption are influenced by leaf thickness, shape pigments, and leaf area, and they have great effect on the maturation of canopies. It was confirmed that the light penetrating through the stratified canopies is decreased exponentially in dual pattern. The cumulative leaf area of a definite space in a certain plant canopy is the same as the growth of leaf area of the canopy at that time. A hypothetical model for calculating the light absorption in plant canopies, was established on the bases of phenomena that incident light is captured at the maximum level and light inerception effect is minimized by leaves.

The effect of wtlitc light on unaeraten growth of Baker's yeast and the accompanying ethanol production has been studied in a batch process at 27$^{\circ}C$. Over the 80-hour period of the Champagne yeast process without pH control, the cull growth was inhibited by the fluorescent light. Another observed difference between the runs is that the drop and subsequent rise in redox potential occurred much sooner in the fermentation with light than in the fermentation without light. This preliminary study indicated that ethanol production could be enhanced by light as the cell concentration is repressed. The possible pathway, shift of the sugar substrate toward ethanol and away from cells was manifested by another difference as well. As observed under the microscope, many of the yeast cells grown under light budded without dividing by the normal fission process as they did in the dark. Furthermore, the undivided and branched (light grown) cell did not agglutinate at the end of the fermentation process as did the distinct spherical (dark grown) cells.
The effect of heat treatment in the light on the subsequent CO2 fixation was studied with isolated spinach chloroplasts to define the role of light during heat stress. The degree of inhibition in CO2 fixation after heat treatment at 35$^{\circ}C$ under full light intensity (600W/$m^2$) was same as that in the dark. However, heat treatment of isolated chloroplasts in the light manifested thylakoidal damage, which did not occur in the dark. Under weak light (10~30 W/$m^2$ ) where no thylakoidal damage occurred, the inhibition was substantially alleviated , showing protective effect of light . The inhibition caused by heat treatment in the dark or light is prevented by the addition of a few combined compounds to the medium prior to treatment. Fructose-1-6- bisphosphate(with aldolase)and ribose-5-phosphate, known to be effective combined with oxaloacetate in preventing inhibition after heat treatment in the dark were equally effective in the light even without oxaloacetate. Addition of sugar phosphate reduced the Mehler reaction, which may occur in fast rae under high light. However, the addition of bicarbnate and catalase that would remove Mehler reaction did not provide any protection, indicating that protective role of sugar phosphate is elsewhere. Furghermore, in whole plants rapid recovery from heat stress was observed in the light. The apparently lesser or equal inhibition in spite of additional thylakoidal damage under heat stres in the light and less requirement for the protection against heat treatment suggest that the inhibitory effect of heat stress is alleviated by light treatment.
With rapid urbanization and reckless urban development in the 21st century, the urban environment has gradually gotten worse, and urban heat island effect has been dramatically intensified. Thus, the importance of street greenery that can mitigate the urban heat island effect has further been highlighted. In this regard, this study was aimed at selecting suitable plant species for street greenery to reduce the urban heat island effect. Towards this end, five roads located in Seocho-gu, Seoul were selected as study sites, and plant species composition and difference of surface temperature were compared and analyzed in relation to the light transmittance. The street with the greatest temperature difference is Bangbae-ro(Platanus occidentalis). On the other hand, the road with the lowest temperature difference is Nambusunhwan-doro(Metasequoia Glyptostroboides). The effect of temperature reduction was found to be associated with light transmittance.Bangbae-ro(Platanus occidentalis) with the lowest light transmittance showed the highest temperature difference and Nambusunhwan-doro(Metasequoia Glyptostroboides) with the highest light transmittance showed the lowest temperature difference. It is analyzed that there are most differences in temperature when the amount of lights coming in between the crown is small. The temperature reduction effect can be obtained by planting deciduous broad-leaved trees. Also species with dense crown and broad width of crown will be able to maximize the effect of temperature reduction. In future studies, it will be necessary to expand the other species of trees in the street, and analyze the germicidal trees and shrubs as well as the differences in the packaging materials.
