Combustion using oxygen enriched air is known as a technology which can increase flame stability as well as thermal efficiency due to improvement of the burning rate. Lift-off, blowout limit and flame length were examined as a function of jet velocity, coflow velocity and OEC(Oxygen Enriched Concentration). Blowout limit of the flame below OEC 25% decreased with coflow velocity, but the limit above OEC 25% increased inversely. Lift-off height decreased with increase of OEC. Especially lift-off hardly occurred in the condition above OEC 40%. Flame length of the flames above OEC 40% was increased until the blowout occurred. Flame stability became improved since lift-off and blowout limit increased much with increase of OEC.
Lift-off means that the rotating journal surface separates from the leaf surface in an air-lubricated multi-leaf foil journal bearing. Lift-off builds up minimum film thickness which will provide load capacity between leaves and journal. In this paper an analysis of air-lubricated multi-leaf foil journal bearing was performed with effects of multi-leaf foil deflection and compressible lubrication equation simultaneously. Minimum film thickness built up versus journal speed predicts the lift off characteristics and these results will be useful in designing and selecting the proper speed of the air-lubricated multi-leaf foil journal bearing.

The lift-off characteristics of lifted laminar propane jet flames highly diluted with nitrogen are investigated introducing acoustic forcing with a fuel tube resonance frequency. A flame stability curve is obtained according to forcing strength and the nozzle exit velocity for N2 diluted flames. Flame lift-off behavior is globally classified into three regimes; 1) a weakly varying partially premixed behavior caused by a collapsible mixing for large forcing strength, 2) a coexistent behavior of the edge flame and a weakly varying partially premixed behavior for moderate forcing strength, and 3) edge flame or triple flame behavior for small forcing. It is shown that the laminar lifted flame with forcing affects flame lift-off behavior considerably, and is also clarified that the flame characteristic of flame base is well described with the penetration depth of the degree of mixing, ${\gamma}$$\_$$\delta$/. It is also confirmed that the weakly varying partially premixed flame caused by a collapsible mixing fur large forcing strength behaves as that just near flame blow-out in turbulent lift-off flame.

Load/Unload(L/UL) technology includes the benefits, that is, increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance contrary to contact-start-stop(CSS). It has been widely used in portable hard disk drive and will become the key technology far developing the small form factor hard disk drive. The main object of L/UL is no slider-disk contact or no media damage. For realizing those, we must consider many design parameters in L/UL system. In this paper, we focus on lift-off force. The 'lift-off' force, defined as the minimum air bearing force, is another very important indicator of unloading performance. A large amplitude of lift-off force increases the ramp force, the unloading time, the slider oscillation and contact-possibility. To minimize 'lift-off' force we optimizes the slider and suspension using the integrated optimization frame, which automatically integrates the analysis with the optimization and effectively implements the repetitive works between them. In particular, this study is carried out the optimal design considering the process of modes tracking through the entire optimization processes. As a result, we yield the equation which can easily find a lift-off force and structural optimization for suspension.

New nondestructive inspection (NDI) technique to detect the defect in metal was developed in which an electromagnetic field is induced in a metal by AC current flowing in the magnetic coil and the leak magnetic-flux disturbed by defects is measured using a tape-recorder head with air gap. This technique can be applied in evaluating the location and sizing of surface defects in components of the ferromagnetic body by means of the non-contacting measurement. In this paper, we have applied this technique to the evaluation of two-dimensional surface cracks in ferromagnetic metal, and also investigated the influence of the various frequencies and lift-off. Defects were detected with maximum values in the distribution of voltage and it was found that the maximum values tend to increase with the defect depth. Although the maximum values for defects are affected by the frequency and lift-off, the depth of small defects can be estimated from the linear relationship between the depth and voltage rate$(V_0/V_{ave})$.
At present, the ground anchor method is commonly applied to securing the slope stability in Korea. The ground anchor is reported to decrease in tensile load due to aging and environmental influences with time such as corrosion, relaxation, creep and so on. In Korea, the lift-off test is performed for the periodic inspection or cases when the symptoms of deterioration on anchors and the residual tensile load of the anchors is checked. However, the current lift-off test standard (MOLIT, 2010) is not fully specified in details. In this study, the factors affecting the lift-off test were investigated based on the previous research and foreign standards and lift-off tests were performed with consideration for the loading and unloading cycle, load increment method, and tensioning tendon method. Based on the results, this paper proposes improved testing and evaluation procedures of the lift-off test considering the workability and time limits in the field.

An experimental study on flame lift-off characteristics of propane jet flame highly diluted with nitrogen has been conducted introducing acoustic forcing with a tube resonant frequency. A flame stability curve is attained according to forcing strength and nozzle exit velocity for $N_2$ diluted flames. Flame lift-off behavior with forcing strength and nozzle exit velocity is globally categorized into three; a well premixed behavior caused by a collapsible mixing for large forcing strength, a coexistent behavior of well-premixed and edge flames interacting with well-organized inner fuel vortices for moderate forcing strengths, and edge flame behavior for small forcing strengths. Special focus is concentrated on the coexistent behavior of the flame base in lifted flame since this may give a hint to a possibility which the flame base behaves like a well-mixed premixed flame in highly turbulent lifted flames. It is also shown that the acoustic forcing to self-pulsating laminar lifted flame affects flame lift-off behavior considerably which is closely related to downstream flow velocity, mixture strength, effective fuel Lewis number, and flame stretch.

In this study, we present the optimization of a head slider using kriging method in order to reduce lift-off force during unloading process with satisfying reliable flying attitude in steady state. To perform an optimization process efficiently, a simplified lift-off force model, which is a function of air bearing suction force and flying attitudes, is created by kriging method. The EMDIOS, which is the process integration and design optimization software developed by iDOT, is used to automatically wrap the analysis with the optimization and efficiently implements the repetitive works between analyzer and optimizer. An optimization problem is formulated to reduce the lift-off force during unloading process while satisfying the flying attitude in reliable range over the entire recording band and reducing the probability of contact between slider and disk. The simulation result shows that the amplitude of lift-off force of optimized L/UL slider is reduced about 62%, compared with that of initial slider model. It is demonstrated by the dynamics L/UL simulation that the optimum slider incorporated with the suspension is not only smoothly loaded onto disk but also properly unloaded onto the ramp.

This paper describes the rmtion characteristics of a particle in GIS under AC voltage. To measure the motion characteristics of the particle, a model gas chamber and parallel plain electrodes were designed and manufactured lift-off voltages of wire and spherical particles on the electrode were calculated and rreasured, and electric charge was calculated. By using a high speed carrera, the rmtion characteristics of various particles with aw}ied voltages, such as motion pattern, lift-off time, lift-off height, were analyzed 1be lift-off voltages were greatly affected by diarreters of wire and spherical particles. At voltage around lift-off voltage, the stand-up particle in vertical state rmved up and down between electrodes and the height of the lift-off particle was low. At voltage around breakdown voltage, the particle repeated vertical rotation a few times while they were being lifted off, and then, they were floating between the electrodes.trodes.
In general, high temperature combustion technique has been adopted as an efficient one. However, hydrocarbon-based fuel can be decomposed under high temperature, and it can affect the stabilization mechanism of edge flame. In this research, basic experimental study was conducted to identify the effect of fuel pyrolysis on the lift-off flame stabilization by changing the temperature of the plug flow reactor. Schmidt number of the gas fuel can be changed with temperature variation due to the fuel pyrolysis. Eventually, this study will help to establish and clarify the stabilization mechanism of lift-off edge flame.
