  • In this paper, the low cycle fatigue failure and ratcheting behavior, as well as their interaction of AH32 steel were experimentally investigated under uniaxial cyclic loading. The effects of mean stress, stress amplitude and stress ratio on the low cycle fatigue life and ratcheting strain were discussed. It was found that the ratcheting strain increased while the fatigue life decreased with the increase of mean stress and stress amplitude, and the increasing stress ratio would result in smaller ratcheting and larger fatigue life. Two kinds of failure modes, i.e. low cycle fatigue failure due to crack propagates and ratcheting failure due to large plastic strain will take place respectively. Based on the experimental results, considered the effect of ratcheting on fatigue life, a model with the maximum stress and ratcheting strain rate was proposed. Comparison with the experimental result showed that the new model provided a good prediction for AH32 steel.

  • Recently, block and permeable pavements have been placed in apartment complex. However. it is hard to decide the cycle of maintenance and repair due to lack of performance evaluation criteria for these pavements. This study carried out life cycle cost analysis(LCCA) to present resonable alternatives of the pavements by considering initial construction cost, maintenance and repair cost along with the cycle of repair. According to results of LCCA, the interlocking concrete block pavement is the best alternative when the repair cycle of 20years is assumed, while asphalt concrete pavement is the best alterative when the repair cycle of 10years is assumed. Therefore, the repair cycle is most important factor to select alternative. Also, it is necessary to develop resonable performance evaluation index to quantify the cycle of maintenance and repair in the future.

  • The computerized management system for bridges is required due to the increased service life and number of bridges. This paper provides information and communication technology (ICT) - based bridge management system (BMS) to enable life cycle management through a comparative study with the development trend and function of domestic and foreign BMSs. BMS developed as an operation system combined an internet and mobile program, and was based on GIS technology and an object-based information management system. BMS supports the establishment of long-term strategies and short-term plans based on predicting the life-cycle performance profile and the necessary budget by object-based informatization for the whole life-cycle information of bridges. Useful knowledge information for supporting decision making was derived from the life-cycle management strategies establishment for approximately 6,000 existing bridges. BMS was developed to be applicable to all nationwide road bridges. In addition, it can be used practically to maintain the performance based on accurate maintenance result management, reducing cost by reasonable budget management, and enhancing the convenience and reliability of field data collection.

  • This extended study aims to analyze empirically the influence of firm diversification on firm performance moderated by the stages of the firm life cycle, which consists of introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. The target population of this study is the firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange. The sampling method uses purposive sampling in the multi-business firm in Indonesia; it includes as many as 127 firms over the period from 2011 to 2017, totaling 889 firm-year observations. The firm performance is measured using a return of equity while the level of firm diversification with the minimum number of two operating segments is proxied by the Herfindahl index. The analysis method used in this study is the estimator model of the Generalized Method of Moment (GMM). The main findings show that the firm life cycle at the stage of growth and maturity significantly strengthens the influence of firm diversification on firm performance. On the other hand, the stage of decline fails to moderate the relationship between firm diversification and firm performance. This study discusses the implications and contributions of the findings theoretically, and provide some policy justifications for potential investors before they invest their money in the capital market.

  • Recently, the demand on the practical application of life-cycle cost effectiveness for design and rehabilitation of civil infrastructure is rapidly growing unprecedently in civil engineering practice. Accordingly, in the 21st century, it is almost obvious that life-cycle cost together with value engineering will become a new paradigm for all engineering decision problems in practice. However, in spite of impressive progress in the researches on the LCC, the most researches have only focused on the Deterministic or Probabilistic LCC analysis approach and general bridge at design stage. Thus, the goal of this study is to develop a practical and realistic methodology for the Life-Cycle Cost LCC-effective optimum decision-making based on reliability analysis of bridges at design stage. The proposed updated methodology is based on the concept of Life Cycle Performance(LCP) which is expressed as the sum of present value of expected direct/indirect maintenance costs with expected optimal maintenance scenario. The updated LCC methodology proposed in this study is applied to the optimum design problem of an actual highway bridge with Cable Stayed Bridges. In conclusion, based on the application of the proposed methods to an actual example bridge, it is demonstrated that a updated methodology for performance-based LCC analysis proposed in this thesis, shown applicably in practice as a efficient, practical, process LCC analysis method at design stage.

  • According to the Framework Act on Sustainable Infrastructure Management, which has been enforced since 2020, reservoirs should be managed to minimize life cycle costs caused by aging through preemptive management such as systematic maintenance and performance improvement. For maintenance in consideration of the life cycle, it is essential to derive the end of life due to continuous performance degradation as the common period increases. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop a performance-predicting model for reservoirs. In this study, a reservoir was divided into main complex facilities to develop a model for the maintenance of the life cycle. A model was developed for each facility. For model development, maintenance information data were collected under management by the Rural Community Corporation. The data available for model development were selected by analyzing the collected data. The developed model was used to predict the expected life expectancy of the reservoir in the current maintenance system and the expected life expectancy in the case of no action. By using the developed model, it is expected that it will be possible to support decision making in operation management and maintenance while considering the life cycle of the reservoir.

  • The sustainable development is a key issue in the whole field of economy, culture and society, which can be accomplished by the improvement of environment. Recently, life cycle assessment(LCA) has been applied to reduce environmental impacts preliminarily by evaluating the environmental performance of a product through its life cycle. In this study, life cycle assessment was performed to analyze quantitatively the environmental impact on the interior panel of electric motor unit(EMU). As a result, the interior panel with aluminum showed the most global warming(GW), while that with phenol and plastic showed high fresh water aquatic ecotoxicity(FAET) and marine water aquatic ecotoxicity(MAET), respectively. Global warming was occurred mainly due to the emission of $CO_2$ by energy consumption. FAET and MAET were caused by the pollutants released from acid-washing and paints coating process. Therefore, an environmental-friendly EMU can be designed considering the environmental impacts of interior panel.

  • In this paper, an optimum design model for minimizing the life-cycle cost (LCC) of high-speed railway steel bridges is proposed The point is that it takes into account service life process as a whole, and thus the life-cycle costs include initial (design, testing, and construction) costs, maintenance costs, expected strength failure costs and expected serviceability failure costs. The problem is formulated as that of minimization of expected total life-cycle cost with respect to the design variables. By processing the optimum LCC design the effective and rational basis is proposed for calculating the total LCC and the sensitivity analysis of LCC is peformed. Based on a numerical example, it may be positively stated that the optimum LCC design of high-speed railway steel bridges proposed in this study provides a lot more rational and economical design, and thus the proposed approach will expedite the development of new concepts and design methodologies that may have important implications in the next generation performance-based design codes and standards.
