A review was performed on fatigue life prediction and strength evaluation of shot peened parts. Fatigue strength of machine parts can be improved by shot peening due to compressive residual stresses on such parts. Compressive residual stress cannot be uniquely define by peening intensity. Several measuring methods of residual stress and the principle of hole drilling method are presented. Exploratory measurement of residual stress was performed on the shot peened SM35C plate with the hole drilling method. Fatigue life and failure location of shot peened parts under bending load can be predicted by a damage parameter which is incorporated with material properties, residual stress, and applied stress conditions. Some method are presented to predict the fatigue strength of shot peened parts at any given life. Shot peening gives its full benefit to the notched machine parts of high strength steels.

Gate-lifting devices in small- to mid-sized sluice gates mostly employ the mechanical roller rack pinion (RRP) system. This RRP system, which consists of a rack-bar and a pinion, transforms a rotation motion into a linear one. The rack-bar has a series of roller trains that mesh with the pinion. In this study, we adopt an exact involute-trochoid tooth profile of the pinion to obtain a higher contact fatigue strength using the profile modification coefficient. Further, we determine the contact forces and investigate Hertz contact stresses to predict the pitting life of the pinion according to varying the shape design parameters. The results indicate that the design fatigue life of an RRP system for sluice gate can be achieved only when the design value of the profile modification coefficient reaches or exceeds a certain level.

Traction motors that is one of the rotating machines for urban transit EMU have been subjected to increased demand for higher operating temperature, more demanding duty cycles, higher starting current, frequent voltage transients and severe environmental exposure. With the advent of PWM drives using power IGBTs in addition to the thermal considerations, it is important to take into account the impact of the dielectric stress upon the winding insulation system life. In analyzing the life of the stator winding, which is the heart of the motor, the majority of all winding failures are usually caused by a combination of various stresses acting on the insulation materials and system. In this paper, to evaluate the expected life of traction motor for urban transit E.M.U. it is proposed a new test method of complex accelerating degradation.

Stainless steel has widely been used in various industrial fields because it has high corrosion resistance. But, we have little design data about the creep life prediction of SUS316L stainless steel. Therefore, in this study, a series of creep tests and study on them under 16 constant stress and temperature combined conditions have been performed to get the creep design data and life prediction of SUS316L stainless steels and we have gotten the following results. First, the stress exponents decrease as the test temperatures increase. Secondly, the creep activation energy gradually decreases as the stresses become bigger. Thirdly, the constant of Larson-Miller parameters on this alloy is estimated about 10. And last, the creep rupture fractographs show the intergranular ductile fracture with many dimples.
For Weibull distributed lifetimes, this paper presents asymptotically optimal accelerated life test plans for practical applications under intermittent inspection and type-I censoring. Computational results show that the asymptotic variance of a low quantile at the design stress as optimal criterion is insensitive to the number of inspections at overstress levels. Sensitivity analyses indicate that optimal plans are robust enough to moderate departures of estimated failure probabilities at the design and high stresses as input parameters to plan accelerated life tests from their true values. Monte Carlo simulation for small sample study on optimal accelerated life test plans developed by the asymptotic maximum likelihood theory is conducted. Simulation results suggest that optimal plans are satisfactory for sample size in practice.

An internal type roller ring gear(RRG) system composed of either a pin or a roller ring gear and its conjugated cam pinion can improve the gear endurance from that of a conventional gear system by reducing the sliding contact, while increasing the rolling motion. In this paper, we first proposed the exact cam gear profile and the self-intersection conditions obtained when the profile shift coefficient is introduced. Then, we investigated contact stresses and surface pitting life to fmd characteristics for surface fatigue by varying the shape design parameters. The results show that the pitting life can be extended significantly by increasing the profile shift coefficient.
Purpose: The most previous works on designing accelerated life tests (ALTs) are focused on the application of a single stress. Because of the difficulty to obtain the sufficient information in a reasonable duration using single stress only, there is needed in practice to use multiple-stress ALTs frequently. This paper presents new practical plans with two stresses for Weibull distribution. Methods: The four-level practical plans based on rectangle test region are proposed and compared with the corresponding three-level statistically optimal plans. Sensitivity analyses for assumed design parameters and life-stress relationship are conducted. Results: A procedure to choose practical ALT plans is illustrated with a numerical example and guidelines for planning two-stress ALTs are provided. Conclusion: The proposed two-stress ALT plans on practical constraints to assess a quantile of Weibull lifetime distribution at the use condition are efficient and robust.
Fatigue life of catenary wires in various environments is reduced when stress is concentrated on some points, which are often found in corroded areas by surrounding pollutants. Therefore, the fatigue test were performed in order to investigate the effect of the surface corrosion on the destructive behavior in service environment and accelerated corrosion environment as well as th examine the corrosive property and mechanism of the catenary wires. In the fatigue test of the messenger stranded wire, the corrosion degraded materials showed 35~50% of fatigue life at a same stress amplitude compared to original material. Because the catenary wires have variable load by the interaction of periodic contacts with pantographs the maximum stresses of trolley wire and messenger wire calculated by simulation at the messenger wire during operation was estimated thought the corrosion behavior interpretation of variable stress and fatigue test.
This paper presents accelerated life tests for Type I censoring data under probabilistic stresses. Probabilistic stress, S, is the random variable for stress influenced by test environments, test equipments, sampling devices and use conditions. The hazard rate, $\theta$ is a random variable of environments and a function of probabilistic stress. In detail, it is assumed that the hazard rate is linear function of the stress, the general stress distribution is a gamma distribution and the life distribution for the given hazard rate, $\theta$is an exponential distribution. Maximum likelihood estimators of model parameters are obtained, and the mean life in use stress condition is estimated. A hypothetical example is given to show its applicability.
It has been found that various stress challenges induce the myocardial antioxidant enzymes and produce an acquisition of the cellular resistance to the ischemic injury in animal hearts. Most of the stresses, however, seem to be guite dangerous to an animal's life. In the present study, therefore, we tried to search for safely applicable stress modalities which could lead to the induction of antioxidant enzymes and the production of myocardial tolerance to the ischemia-reperfusion injury. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (200-250 g) were exposed to various non-fatal stress conditions, i.e., hyperthermia (environmental temperature of $42^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, non-anesthetized animal), iramobilization (60 min), treadmill exercise (20 m/min, 30min), swimming (30 min), and hyperbaric oxyflenation (3 atm, 60 min), once a day for 5 days. The activities of myocardial antioxidant enzymes and the ischemia-reperfusion injury of isolated hearts were evaluated at 24 hr after the last application of the stresses. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), were assayed in the freshly excised ventricular tissues. The ischemia-reperfusion injury was produced by 20 min-global ischemia followed by 30 min-reperfusion using a Langendorff perfusion system. In swimming and hyperbaric oxygenation groups, the activities of SOD and G6PD increased significantly and in the hyperthermia group, the catalase activity was elevated by 63% compared to the control. The percentile recoveries of cardiac function at 30 min of the post-ischemic reperfusion were 55.4%, 73.4%, and 74.2% in swimming, the hyperbaric oxygenation and the hyperthermia groups, respectively. The values were significantly higher than that of the control (38.6%). In additions, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and lactate dehydrogenase release were significantly reduced in the stress groups. The results suggest that the antioxidant enzymes in the heart could be induced by the apparently safe in vivo-stresses and this may be involved in the myocardial protection from the ischemia-reperfusion injury.
