  • The seepage should be analyzed to design or reinforce the levees. The steady seepage analysis is an usual application in USA and European countries where the large scaled dams and levees are existed. However, Korea and Japan, where the reaching time is short, the excessive forces are applied on the levees at the short reaching time if the seepages are analyzed in steady condition. Accordingly, the unsteady analysis based on the variation of time is necessitated. In the unsteady analysis, the flood wave type is necessary. No criteria and standards, however, are derived for the unsteady seepage in Korea. In the study, the flood wave type is derived for the unsteady seepage. The major reliable flood surface data are collected in 5 stations including Jindong of the Nakdong river basin. The data are sorted in duration, and they are non-dimensionalized. The statistical method is also applied to derive the waves. To verify the study, the seepage is analyzed by the derived wave and applied to the prototype. The results are also compared with the Japanese Method. The errors between the hydraulic gradient and critical velocity method are $0{\sim}0.7%$, $0{\sim}0.7%$ at the Jindong, $1.6{\sim}4.0%$, $1.7{\sim}4.1%$ at the Hyunpoong, $0.6{\sim}3.6%$, $0.6{\sim}3.7%$ at the Waegwan, $2.0{\sim}8.1%$, $2.0{\sim}8.1%$ at the Nakdong, and $1.2{\sim}9.8%$, $1.3{\sim}9.9%$ at the Jeongam, respectively. The relationship($R^2$) between each method is relatively high as $0.983{\sim}0.999$. This means the results are more logical than the Japanese method, and the study is applicable to the design of hydraulic structures.

  • I investigated the river morphology and river naturality according to the environment of the Hwang River. The numbers of flexions at the upstream regions were more than those of downstream regions. The Hwang River showed very low overall diversity of the flow. Materials of river shore at low channel width were mainly boulders or gravel at the upstream regions, and the middle and downstream were silts and clay. Artificial masonry and natural materials were mixed from materials of river levees. The Hwang River was some of the natural herbaceous vegetation to riparian zones. Land utilities for floodplain were extremely overall farmland were predominant, and partly used by natural vegetation in the forest, a soccer field, some park facilities, residential, and commercial facilities. The water was width sleep / rivers beam ratio of 10 to 20%. Currently estimation for river naturality widely used in rivers were consisted of a narrow wide a variety of items and did not reflect the actual.

  • Surge overflow may cause damage on earthen levees. Levee strengthened on the levee crest and landward-side slope can provide protection against the erosion damage induced by surge overflow. In this paper, surge overflow of a roller compacted concrete RCC strengthened levee was studied in a purely Lagrangian and meshless approach, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. After verifying the developed model with analytical solution and comparing the results with full-scale experimental data, the roughness and erosion parameters were calibrated. The water thickness, flow velocity, and erosion depth at crest, landward-side slope and toe were calculated. The characteristics of flow hydraulics and erosion on the RCC strengthened levee are given. The results indicate that the RCC strengthened levee can resist erosion damage for a long period.

  • Transient in an electrical system are generated by lightning and switching. This paper presents analysis of switching and lightning surge, and means of limiting the voltage magnification transient for high voltage power systems by using EDSA's EMTAP software package. One means of limiting the voltage magnification transient is to convert the end-user power factor correction banks to harmonic filters. An inductance in series with the power factor correction bank was used to decrease the transient voltage at the customer bus to acceptable levees. The interception of the impulse from the phase wire is fairly straight forward by properly installed surge arresters. The simulation shows that the addition of the surge arrester at the customer location can achieve a substantial reduction of the transient magnitude.

  • Damage to earth structures for roads, railways and residential areas, as well as dams and river levees, during the 2004 Niigata-ken Chuetsu earthquake in Japan, and their rehabilitation works are overviewed. Several influential factors are pointed out, such as a) heavy rainfall preceding the earthquake, b) large aftershocks, c) geological conditions for subsoil including existence of liquefiable layers, d) compaction degrees for embankment, and e) drainage capacity from subsoil/embankments. It is also reported that, in the reconstruction works of damaged roads and railways, preferred use of geogrid-reinforced soil retaining walls was implemented.

  • The Han River is divided into North and South Korea by NLL(Northern Limit Line) and its area has been blocked by CCL(Civil Control Line) since the Korean War in 1950. Satellite remote sensing, therefore, is uniquely suited to monitoring bar transformation in the region. In river with bar, the characteristics of its physical conditions have a close relationship with bar morphology. In this paper, a monitoring approach of bar transformation in the Han River Estuary is presented using RADARSAT/SAR images from 2000 to 2005 and spatial patterns of bar morphology are presented. it could be said that in the estuary vegetated area and natural levees are developed well, but bars are shifted after an event like a flood. It is also showed that suspended solids such as silt transported through the estuary could contribute highly to a sedimentation environment around Incheon.

  • On behalf of hazard mitigation, cases of investigation methods on levee are described. In general, failures of levee are caused by piping, water leakage through ground under the levee in Kimpo, Ilsan etc. Several phenomena against levees should be protected through consideration of analysis and quality control stage during construction. In this paper, protection methods against failures should be investigated by case studies.

  • This article introduce Comfort Class V released by Dnv The Class has an objective of classifying ships by noise and vibration levees. It is apparent that noise criteria listed in the Class can not be satisfied without special efforts to enhance sound insulation performance in cabins. Accordingly, panel makers should develope panels which have very high sound insulation performance enough to satisfy the criteria. Also, due to large difference of sound insulation performance between cabin and laboratory, it is necessary that ship yards should improve the method for installing cabins.

  • It has been known that lap splicing in the longitudinal reinforcement of bridge columns is not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were usually be located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. This research is to evacuate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4.0 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splicing. Quasi-static tests under three different axial load levees were conducted. It has been observed that displacement ductility ratios of test columns with lap splicing were significantly reduced.
