  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a necessity for reliable and efficient functioning of engineering systems. Damage detection (DD) is a crucial component of any SHM system. Lamb waves are a popular means to DD owing to their sensitivity to small damages over a substantial length. This typically involves an active sensing paradigm in a pitch-catch setting, that involves two piezo-sensors, a transmitter and a receiver. In this paper, we propose a data-intensive DD approach for beam structures using high frequency signals acquired from beams in a pitch-catch setting. The key idea is to develop a statistical learning-based approach, that harnesses the inherent sparsity in the problem. The proposed approach performs damage detection, localization in beams. In addition, quantification is possible too with prior calibration. We demonstrate numerically that the proposed approach achieves 100% accuracy in detection and localization even with a signal to noise ratio of 25 dB.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and robust two-dimensional finite element method for turbulence simulation in open channels. The model is based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin finite element method and Boussinesq's eddy viscosity theory. The method developed in the study is depth-averaged mixing length model which assumes anisotropic and local equilibrium state of turbulence. The model calibration and validation were performed by comparing with analytical solutions and observed data. Several numerical simulations were carried out, which examined the performance of the turbulence model for the purpose of sensitivity analysis. The uniform channels that appear horizontal flow and vertical flow were carried out. The model was also applied to the Han river was in for the applicability test. The results were compared with the observed data. The suggested model displayed reasonable flow distribution compare to the observed data in natural river flow. As a result of this study, the two-dimensional finite element model provides a reliable results for flow distribution based on the turbulence simulation in open channels.

  • A reversed phase HPLC analysis of atorvastatin (AS) standard solution was performed using diclofenac (DF) as internal standard. Column oven temperature, flow rate and the composition of the mobile phase were varied in order to determine a practical system setup using a C18 column and UV detector. Two C18 columns of different length were compared regarding their influence on the AS peak shape. Based on these preliminary experiments a validation study was performed utilizing a C18 column at $62^{\circ}C$ with a mobile phase consisting of sodium phosphate buffer (0.05 M, pH 4.0), methanol and acetonitrile (40:50:10, v/v/v). The detection limit for AS was $0.1{\mu}g/ml$ and inter- and intra-day calibration curves were linear over a concentration range of $0.2-50{\mu}g/ml$. Accuracy and precision were satisfactory in the AS concentration range of $0.5-50{\mu}g/ml$.

  • Assessment of a monumental concrete arch bridge with a total length of 210 meters having three major spans of 30 meters and a height of 65 meters, which is located in an earthquake-prone region in southern part of the country is presented in this study. Three-dimensional finite element model of the bridge was generated using a commercially available general finite element analysis software and based on the outcomes of a series of in-depth acceleration measurements that were conducted on-site, the model was refined. By using the structural parameters obtained from the dynamic and the static tests, calibrated model of the bridge structure was obtained and this model was used for necessary calculations regarding structural assessment and evaluation.

  • In this paper, we address practical methods for calculating camera lens distortion for real time applications. Although the lens distortion problem can be easily ignored for constant-parameter lenses, in the field of real-time camera calibrations, for zoom lenses a large number of calculations are needed to calculate the distortion. However, if the distortion can be calculated independently of the other camera parameter, we can easily calibrate a camera without the need for a large number of calculations. Based on Tsai's camera model, we propose two different methods for calculating lens distortion. These methods are so simple and require so few calculations that the lens distortion can be rapidly calculated even in real-time applications. The first method is to refer to the focal length - lens distortion Look Up Table(LUT), which is constructed in the initialization process. The second method is to use the relationship between the feature points found in the image. Experiments were carried out for both methods, results of which show that the proposed methods are favorably comparable in performance with non-real full optimization method.

  • We report on electrochemical signal amplification using gap electrodes based on the redox cycling between gap electrodes. The distance between electrodes was controlled from $2{\mu}m$ to a few hundreds of nanometer by chemical deposition of reduced Au ion on the pre-defined electrodes. Enhanced redox current of ferri/ferrocyanide was obtained by redox cycling between the two working electrodes. The faradaic current is amplified about a thousand times in this redox system. Since the signal amplification is due to the shortened diffusion length between the two electrodes, the narrower the nanogap was, the better detection limit, calibration sensitivity, and dynamic range. The experimental results were discussed on the basis of the cyclic voltammetry (CV), atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements.

  • In vitro cytotoxicity of 23 alkyl phenols (APs) on human cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa) was determined using the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) cytotoxicity assay. Two different sets of descriptors were used to construct the calibration model based on Genetic Algorithm-Multiple Linear Regression (GA-MLR) based on the experimental data. A statistically robust Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) model was achieved ($R^2$=95.05%, $Q^2_{LOO}$=91.23%, F=72.02 and SE= 0.046) using three Dragon descriptors based on Me (0D-Constitutional descriptor), BELp8 (2D-Burden eigenvalue descriptor) and HATS8p (3D-GETAWAY descriptor). However, external validation could not fully prove its validity of the selected QSAR in characterization of the cytotoxicity of APs towards HeLa cells. Nevertheless, the cytotoxicity profiles showed a finding that 4-n-octylphenol (4-NOP), 4-tert-octyl-phenol (4-TOP), 4-n-nonylphenol (4-NNP) had a more potent cytotoxic effect than other APs tested, inferring that increased length and molecular bulkiness of the substituent had important influence on the LDH cytotoxicity.

  • This work proposes a calibration-free 14b 70MS/s 0.13um CMOS ADC for high-performance integrated systems such as WLAN and high-definition video systems simultaneously requiring high resolution, low power, and small size at high speed. The proposed ADC employs signal insensitive 3-D fully symmetric layout techniques in two MDACs for high matching accuracy without any calibration. A three-stage pipeline architecture minimizes power consumption and chip area at the target resolution and sampling rate. The input SHA with a controlled trans-conductance ratio of two amplifier stages simultaneously achieves high gain and high phase margin with gate-bootstrapped sampling switches for 14b input accuracy at the Nyquist frequency. A back-end sub-ranging flash ADC with open-loop offset cancellation and interpolation achieves 6b accuracy at 70MS/s. Low-noise current and voltage references are employed on chip with optional off-chip reference voltages. The prototype ADC implemented in a 0.13um CMOS is based on a 0.35um minimum channel length for 2.5V applications. The measured DNL and INL are within 0.65LSB and l.80LSB, respectively. The prototype ADC shows maximum SNDR and SFDR of 66dB and 81dB and a power consumption of 235mW at 70MS/s. The active die area is $3.3mm^2$.

  • We present a novel cell deformability monitoring chip based on the digitally measured cell lysis rate which is dependent on the areal strain of the cell membrane. This method offers simple cell deformability monitoring by automated high-throughput testing system. We suggest the filter design considering the areal strain imposed on the cell membrane passing through the filter array having gradually increased orifice length. In the experiment using erythrocytes, we characterized the cell deformability in terms of average fracture areal strain which was $0.24{\pm}0.014\;and\;0.21{\pm}0.002$ for normal and chemically treated erythrocytes, respectively. We also verified that the areal strain of 0.15 effectively discriminates the deformability difference of normal and chemically treated erythrocytes, which can be applied to the clinical situation. We compared the lysis rates and their difference for the samples from different donors and found that the present chips can be commonly used without any calibration process. The experimental results demonstrate the simple structure and high performance of the present cell deformability monitoring chips, applicable to simple and cost-effective cell aging process monitoring.
