The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sequential intermittent pneumatic compression in patients with lymphedema who were hospitalized for three days at Samsung Medical Center. Thirty-three subjects with lymphedema was selected by physician referral. A selection of the patients was made according to the following criteria : 1) no known metastases, 2) no infection after the a difference of at least 10% in the volumes of edematous limb. All patients were treated with the Lympha-Press(Model 103-A). Circumferential limb mesurements was done before and after a 3-day treatment period. As a result of sequential intermittent pneumatic compression therapy. All extremity showed a decrease in circumferential measurements with the maximal reduction occurring at the wrist(55.75 %) for the upper extremities and at the lower 1/3 of calf (40.61%) for the lower extremities. Upper extremity arm was reduced by 42.1% and lower extremity leg by 33.61%. In contrast with this, the proximal levels of arm patients and leg showed comparatively poor reduction than distal levels. Almost 44.44% of arm patients and 5.26% of leg patients experienced significant reduction(> 50%) after compression therapy. These data clearly indicates that Sequential Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Therapy was effective treatment for reducing of extremity volume in patients with lymphedema. but this was variable degree and dependent on the amount of pre-existing lymphedema. Other factors such as duration of edema, etiology, previous history of radiology, age did not appear to influence the extend of improvement. Further sutdies will be necessary to determine long term benefit of this therapy.

PURPOSE: Sitting with crossed legs may have an effect on maintaining a healthy body posture and proper functioning of the respiratory system. Thus, this study's objective was to identify whether or not sitting with crossed legs affects the vertebral angle, chest wall mobility, the pulmonary function, and the activity of the respiratory muscles. METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects were recruited for this study (16 males and 14 females). The vertebral angle, chest wall mobility, pulmonary function, and the activity of the respiratory muscle were measured while the subjects sat in the correct posture and these factors were again measured with the subjects seated with their legs crossed. Three-dimensional motion analysis was used to determine the trunk and lumbar vertebral angles. Surface electromyography was employed to measure the sternocleidomastoid, the rectus abdominis, and the external and internal oblique abdominis muscles. A tapeline was utilized to evaluate the subjects' chest wall mobility. Spirometry was assessed to determine the forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second. Paired t-tests were then performed (p<.05). RESULTS: There were significant differences in the trunk and lumbar flexion angles, the chest wall mobility, the activity of the right external oblique muscle, and the left internal oblique abdominis muscle. However, the difference in pulmonary function did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION: A crossed leg posture caused slight thoracic extension and lumbar flexion, which may lead to a decrease of the chest wall mobility and also to an imbalance of the abdominal muscles. Therefore, sitting with a crossed leg posture should be avoided. Yet a crossed leg posture did not have any clinical effect on the pulmonary function of healthy people. It may be necessary to study the effects of sitting with crossed legs over an extended period of time for patients suffering with impaired respiratory function.
A 32-year-old woman presented with cough and hemoptysis. The radiologic findings showed increased interstitial markings in the right lung, a slightly decreased lung volume in the RLL and a hypoplastic right pulmonary artery with collaterals in the mediastinum and subpleural area. The pulmonary angiography showed an abrupt occlusion of the right lower pulmonary artery. The echocardiographic findings indicated pulmonary hypertension. A doppler leg ultrasonograph disclosed that the left popliteal vein was occluded with collateral veins, not filling the defect in the venous lumen. The D-dimer increased 1.0 ug/ml. This condition was initially misdiagnosed as a congenital pulmonary artery agenesis. Finally, a chronic pulmonary thromboembolism with a deep vein thrombosis was confirmed.

A simple experimental method was used in an attempt to realize the elevation of the fishing ability of purse seine in the sea area of Cheju Island, the changes of seine volume and tension in the purseline during pursing. Experiments carried out on the six types simplified reduced model seines which were made of knotless nettings. The nettings were woven in different leg length 4.3, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.6 and 7.7mm of polyester 28 tex two threads two-ply twine, and each of the seines were named I, II, III, IV, V and Ⅵ seine. Dimension of seine models were 450cm for corkline and 85cmfor seine depth, each seines rigged up 160g of float for a floatline and 50g (underwater weight) of lead for a leadline. These model purse seines were made of the scale of 1/200 of its full scale, a 120 ton in the near sea of Cheju Island. Designing and testing for the model purse seines were based on the Tauti's law. Experiments were measured in the observation channel of a flume tank at the static conditions set up shooting and pursing equipments. Motion of purse seine during purse line was recorded by the two sets video camera for VTR which were placed in top and front of the model seine. The reading coordinate of seine volume carried out by the video digitization system, disk data for the purseline tension. An analysis were performed on the changes seine volume and tension in the purseline during pursing. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The seine volume during pursing was largest for Ⅵ seine with smallest d/l followed by V, IV, III, II and I seines, and tension in the purseline was small. 2. Seine volume during pursing can be expressed by the following equation; CVt=l-EXP[{2.79 (d/l)+0.35}t-33.37 (d/l) + 0.57] Where CVt is volume ratio, d is twine diameter, l is leg length and t is pursing time (sec). 3. Tension in the purse line during pursing can be expressed by the following equation; T= 1- EXP {0.57t + 13.36 (d/l)+2.97} Where T is tension (kg) in the purseline during pursing.
Three-dimensional endwall flow within a linear cascade passage of high performance turbine blade is simulated with a 3-D Navier-Stokes CFD code (MOSA3D), which is based on body-fitted coordinate system, pressure-correction and finite volume method. The endwall flow characteristics, including the development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, etc. are clearly simulated, consistent with the generally known tendency. The effects of both turbulence model and convective differencing scheme on the prediction performance of endwall flow are systematically analyzed in the present paper. The convective scheme is found to have stronger effect than the turbulence model on the prediction performance of endwall flow. The present simulation result also indicates that the suction leg of the horseshoe vortex continues on the suction side until it reaches the trailing edge.

The purpose of this research is to measure range of virtual hip joint and lower limb joints motion such as the hip, knee and ankle joints for 47 young male students. The results of ANOVA revealed that anthropometric dimensions including weight and stature did not show any significant effects on the range of virtual hip joint and lower limb joints motion and the range of motion with two degrees of freedom at the shoulder, virtual hip and hip joints. Anthropometric dimensions such as age, weight, statuire, arm length, shoulder height and leg length were found to be lowly correlated with the range of virtual hip joint and lower limb joints motion. It is expected that the data on the range of joint motion suggested in this study can be used as a valuable input data when designing workplace, predicting human posture and reach volume, etc.

A four-legged mobile robot can move on the plain terrain with mobility and stability, but if there exist any obstacles on the terrain of the motion direction, it takes extra times for a mobile robot to cross those obstacles and the stability should be considered during motion. The main objevtive is the study of a quadruped which can cross obstacles with better mobility, stability and fuel economy than any other wheeled or tracked vehicles. Vertical step, isolated wall and ditch are the basic obstacles and by understanding those three cases perfectly, a quadruped can move on any mixed rough terrain as 4-legged animal moves. Each leg of a determine the crossing capability in a static analysis. A quadruped can be simplified with links and joints. By applying the research method, a quadruped can determine the control procedures as soon as it receives the terrain informations from scanner and finally can be moved as animals move with mobility and stability.
