  • For measuring nonlinear Vehicle Modeling based on 7-Depth Sensor, the neural networks are proposed m adaptive and in realtime. The structure of it is similar to recurrent neural networks; a delayed output as the input and a delayed error between the output of plant and neural networks as a bias input. In addition, we compute the desired value of hidden layer by an optimal method instead of transfering desired values by backpropagation and each weights are updated by RLS(Recursive Least Square). Consequently, this neural networks are not sensitive to initial weights and a learning rate, and have a faster convergence rate than conventional neural networks. This new neural networks is Error Estimated Neural Networks. We can estimate nonlinear models in realtime by the proposed networks and control nonlinear models.

  • In this study the effect of roundness error with respect to the cutting conditions using the external cylindrical work piece by end mill cutting in a machining center was studied. the end mill used in this study is HSS coated with Ti-N which is of Ø 12-4 flutes. The material of workpiece is SM20C and cutting oil is used as a cooling flued The cutting experiments were carried out for the several cutting conditions(depth of cut height of end mill feed rate revolution per minute and cutting direction) and their roundness effects were compared using the least squares circle measuring method. The experimental results are summarized as follows : 1) The cutting depth is dominant for the roundness of a cylindrical work piece and the cutting speed must be determined precisely when the cutting depth is large 2) When the cutting direction in circular manufacturing is the same with the spindle rotation i.e up-cutting condition the surface roundness is also improved.

  • A study of estuarine flows during a neap tide was performed using 13-hour roving acoustic Doppler current profiles (ADCP) and conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles in the Altamaha River estuary, Georgia, U.S.A. The least-squared harmonic analysis method was used to fit the tidal ($M_2$) component and separate the flow into two components: the tidal and residual ($M_2$-removed) flows. We applied this method to depth-averaged data. Results show that the $M_2$ component demonstrates over 95% of the variability of observation data. As the flow was dominated by the $M_2$ tidal component in a narrow channel, the tidal ellipse distribution was essentially a back-and-forth motion. The amplitude of $M_2$ velocity component increased slightly from the river mouth (0.45 m/sec) to land (0.6 m/sec) and the phase showed fairly constant values in the center of the channel and rapidly decreasing values near the northern and southern shoaling areas. The residual flow and transport calculated from depth-averaged flow shows temporal variability over the tidal time scale. Strong landward flows appeared during slack waters which may be attributed to increased baroclinic forcing when turbulent mixing decreases.

  • Precast prestressed double-tee slab may be designed by the PCI Design Handbook. It is based on the bridge construction and is required for reorganization for the use of buildings in the domestic construction environments. Much enhanced sections are developed from the reforming process on the determined design factors in the previous experimental works on double tees. Pre-determined shape, reinforcement detail, and 5000 psi concrete strength can not be expected as the best solution for the domestic construction requirements because large amount of use on that systems are anticipated. Flexural tests are performed on four full-scale 12.5m proto-type models, "least depth double tee", which are resulted from the optimization process. Domestic superimposed live load regulation, domestic material properties which is available to product, building design requirements and economy in construction are considered as the main factors to establish. the first two sections are double tee section for 1.2 ton/$\m^2$ market live load with straight and one-point depressed strands and the second two are for 0.6 ton/$\m^2$ parking live load with those strand types. All of the specimens tested fully comply with the flexural strength requirements as specified by ACI 318-95. However, the research has shown that following improved considerations are needed for better result in practice. The locations and method of connection for the lowest bottom mild bar, connection method between precast and cast-in-place concrete, and dap-end reinforcement are need to be improved.

  • The current study focuses on the effect of the end shape of steel pipe piles on installation effort and bearing resistance using the pressing method of installation under dense ground conditions. The effect of pile rotation on the installation effort and bearing resistance is also investigated. The model steel piles with a flat end, cone end and cutting-edge end were used in this study. The test results indicated that cone end pile with the pressing method of installation required the least installation effort (load) and showed higher ultimate resistance than flat and cutting-edge end piles. However, pressing and rotation during cutting-edge end pile installation considerably reduces the installation effort (load and torque) if pile penetration in one rotation equal to the cutting-edge depth. Inclusion of rotation during pile installation reduces the ultimate bearing resistance. However, if penetration of the cutting-edge end pile equal to the cutting-edge depth in one rotation, the reduction in ultimate resistance can be minimized. In comparing the cone and cutting-edge end piles installed with pressing and rotation, the least installation effort is observed in the cutting-edge end pile installed with penetration rate equal to the cutting-edge depth per rotation.

  • To enhance web site's usability, it has been suggested that the depth of tree structured menus should be minimized. In this research, experimental results are reported to quantitatively compare the methods currently used for reducing the depth of menus in web sites. 25 popular web sites were selected and their menu types were categorized into four types: top menu, drop-down menu, boolean menu, and table of contents. The four types of menu were then sub-categorized into 15 different types according to their sub-menu type, existence of menu colors, and the event occurring after mouse activation. Performance tests and subjective evaluation were carried out. The results showed that there were no significant differences in terms of response time among the 15 menu types, while table of contents and drop-down in which the first and second level of menus were visible induced the least number of errors. In the subjective test, the top-menu structure with colors and presentation of its sub-menu without clicking mouse were preferred.

  • The growth changes in craniofacial depth and height from seven to eleven years of age have been studied in thirty two Korean children, consisted of seventeen boys and fifteen girls. The data was obtained from lateral cephalometric radiographs analyzed by the Coben's coordinate system, and the main conclusions might be summarized as follows. 1. Among the craniofacial depth increments the lower facial depth dimension increased the most, mid-facial depth dimension increased loss, and cranial depth dimension increased the least. 2. In spite of the increasing depth dimensions, the mid-facial depth proportion had a tendency to remain stable. 3. The degree of overbite increased markedly from seven to eleven years of age. 4. Increment in the total anterior facial height dimension was larger than that in the total posterior facial height, and the upper anterior facial height increased more than the lower anterior facial height. 5. The lower facial depth proportion increased markedly, and the convexity of the face was reduced significantly. 6. The posterior facial height tended to show small proportional changes. 7. The growth increments in craniofacial complex were larger in the facial height than in the facial depth.

  • Line-laser beams are used for accurate measurement of 3D shape, which is robust to external illumination. For depth measurement, we project a line-laser beam across an object from the face and take an image of the beam on the object surface using a CCD camera at some angle with respect to the face. For shape measurement, we project parallel line-laser beams with narrow line to line distance. When a layer of thin materials attached to a cylinder is long narrow along its circumference, we can measure the shape of the layer with a small number of parallel line beams if we project line beams along the circumference of the cylinder. Measurement of the depth of the attached materials on a line-laser beam is based on the number of pixels between an imaginary line along the imaginary cylinder without the attached materials and the beam line along the materials attached to the cylinder. For this we need to localize the imaginary line in the captured image. In this paper, we model the shape of the line as an ellipse and localize the line with least square estimate. The proposed method results in smaller error (maximum 0.24mm) than a popular 3D depth camera (maximum 1mm).

  • The mean shear wave velocity to the depth of 30 m (Vs30) derived from the western Vs is the current site classification criterion for determining the design seismic ground motion taking into account the site amplification potential. In order to evaluate the Vs30 at a site, a shear wave velocity (Vs) Profile extending to at least 30 m in depth must be acquired from in-situ seismic test. In many cases, however, the resultant depth of the Vs profile may not extend to 30 m, owing to the unfavorable field condition and the limitation of adopted testing techniques. In this study, the Vs30 and the mean shear wave velocity to a depth shallower, than 30 m (VsDs) were computed from the Vs profiles more than 30 m in depth obtained by performing various seismic tests at total 72 sites in Korea, and a correlation between Vs30 and VsDs was drawn based on the computed mean Vs data. In addition, a method for extrapolating the Vs profile from shallow depth to 30 m was developed by building a shape curve based on the average data of all Vs profiles. For evaluating the Vs30 from the shallow Vs profiles, both the methods using VsDs and shape curve result in less bias than the simplest method of extending the lowermost Vs equally to 30 m in depth, and are usefully applicable particularly in the cases of the Vs profiles extending to at least 10 m in depth.

  • The basic analysis of Soil and structural mechanics for the bridge substructure affected by the flow of water is sufficient in the construction of such bridges, but the stability of scour resulting from hydraulic phenomena is insufficient. In addition, it is not enough to estimate the scour depth of the bridge which reflects the watershed characteristics of the domestic river because it uses the formula for calculating the scour depth of the overseas piers in calculating the scour depth of the bridge. In this study, the application of the CSU (1993) formula, which is currently applied to the national river design criteria, was reviewed between the two formulas after calculating the scour after calculating the scour by applying another bridge deck scour calculation formula to take into account the uncertainty in the calculation of scour. In this study, in addition to the CSU (1993) formula, which is currently applied to Korean river design criteria, another scour depth calculation formula is applied to calculate uncertainty in scour depth calculation, was reviewed between the two formulas. The review confirmed that the SSE (%) showed a difference of at least 2.08%, up to 91.23%, and SSEn(%) at least 0.19%, up to 415.91%, when compared to the measured depth of the pier based on the hydraulic model experiment and the depth of the pier calculated with the nine scour depth formulas in use. In other words, it is confirmed that there are many differences between the scouring formulas of piers. The results of this study are expected to be used to estimate scour depth in future river design.
