Objective: To compare the effects of bone suppression imaging using deep learning (BSp-DL) based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) and bone subtraction imaging using a dual energy technique (BSt-DE) on radiologists' performance for pulmonary nodule detection on chest radiographs (CXRs). Materials and Methods: A total of 111 adults, including 49 patients with 83 pulmonary nodules, who underwent both CXR using the dual energy technique and chest CT, were enrolled. Using CT as a reference, two independent radiologists evaluated CXR images for the presence or absence of pulmonary nodules in three reading sessions (standard CXR, BSt-DE CXR, and BSp-DL CXR). Person-wise and nodule-wise performances were assessed using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) and alternative free-response ROC (AFROC) curve analyses, respectively. Subgroup analyses based on nodule size, location, and the presence of overlapping bones were performed. Results: BSt-DE with an area under the AFROC curve (AUAFROC) of 0.996 and 0.976 for readers 1 and 2, respectively, and BSp-DL with AUAFROC of 0.981 and 0.958, respectively, showed better nodule-wise performance than standard CXR (AUAFROC of 0.907 and 0.808, respectively; p ≤ 0.005). In the person-wise analysis, BSp-DL with an area under the ROC curve (AUROC) of 0.984 and 0.931 for readers 1 and 2, respectively, showed better performance than standard CXR (AUROC of 0.915 and 0.798, respectively; p ≤ 0.011) and comparable performance to BSt-DE (AUROC of 0.988 and 0.974; p ≥ 0.064). BSt-DE and BSp-DL were superior to standard CXR for detecting nodules overlapping with bones (p < 0.017) or in the upper/middle lung zone (p < 0.017). BSt-DE was superior (p < 0.017) to BSp-DL in detecting peripheral and sub-centimeter nodules. Conclusion: BSp-DL (GAN-based bone suppression) showed comparable performance to BSt-DE and can improve radiologists' performance in detecting pulmonary nodules on CXRs. Nevertheless, for better delineation of small and peripheral nodules, further technical improvements are required.

Side effects of drugs mean harmful and unintended effects resulting from drugs used to prevent, diagnose, or treat diseases. These side effects can lead to patients' death and are the main causes of drug developmental failures. Thus, various methods have been tried to identify side effects. These can be divided into biological and systems biology approaches. In this study, we use systems biology approach and focus on using various phenotypic information in addition to the chemical structure and target proteins. First, we collect datasets that are used in this study, and calculate similarities individually. Second, we generate a set of features using the similarities for each drug-side effect pair. Finally, we confirm the results by AUC(Area Under the ROC Curve), and showed the significance of this study through a comparison experiment.
Survival analysis mainly deals with the time to event, including death, onset of disease, and bankruptcy. The common characteristic of survival analysis is that it contains "censored" data, in which the time to event cannot be completely observed, but instead represents the lower bound of the time to event. Only the occurrence of either time to event or censoring time is observed. Many traditional statistical methods have been effectively used for analyzing survival data with censored observations. However, with the development of high-throughput technologies for producing "omics" data, more advanced statistical methods, such as regularization, should be required to construct the predictive survival model with high-dimensional genomic data. Furthermore, machine learning approaches have been adapted for survival analysis, to fit nonlinear and complex interaction effects between predictors, and achieve more accurate prediction of individual survival probability. Presently, since most clinicians and medical researchers can easily assess statistical programs for analyzing survival data, a review article is helpful for understanding statistical methods used in survival analysis. We review traditional survival methods and regularization methods, with various penalty functions, for the analysis of high-dimensional genomics, and describe machine learning techniques that have been adapted to survival analysis.
The prediction of seismic behavior of the existing building stock is one of the most impactful and complex problems faced by countries with frequent and intense seismic activities. Human lives can be threatened or lost, the economic life is disrupted and large amounts of monetary reparations can be potentially required. However, authorities at a regional or national level have limited resources at their disposal in order to allocate to preventative measures. Thus, in order to do so, it is essential for them to be able to rank a given population of structures according to their expected degree of damage in an earthquake. In this paper, the authors present a ranking approach, based on Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for pairwise comparisons, coupled with ad hoc ranking rules. The case study employed data from 404 reinforced concrete structures with various degrees of damage from the Athens 1999 earthquake. The two main components of our experiments pertain to the performance of the ML models and the success of the overall ranking process. The former was evaluated using the well-known respective metrics of Precision, Recall, F1-score, Accuracy and Area Under Curve (AUC). The performance of the overall ranking was evaluated using Kendall's tau distance and by viewing the problem as a classification into bins. The obtained results were promising, and were shown to outperform currently employed engineering practices. This demonstrated the capabilities and potential of these models in identifying the most vulnerable structures and, thus, mitigating the effects of earthquakes on society.
In the present study, we apply the multiple cue probability learning (MCPL) paradigm to examine consumer learning from feedback in repeated trials. This paradigm is useful in investigating consumer learning, especially learning the relationships between the overall quality and attributes. With this paradigm, we can analyze what people learn from repeated trials by using the lens model, i.e., whether it is knowledge or consistency. In addition to introducing this paradigm, we aim to demonstrate that knowledge people gain from repeated trials with feedback is robust enough to weaken one of the most often examined contextual effects, the asymmetric dominance effect. The experiment consists of learning session and a choice task and stimuli are sport rafting boats with motor engines. During the learning session, the participants are shown an option with three attributes and are asked to evaluate its overall quality and type in a number between 0 and 100. Then an expert's evaluation, a number between 0 and 100, is provided as feedback. This trial is repeated fifteen times with different sets of attributes, which comprises one learning session. Depending on the conditions, the participants do one (low) or three (high) learning sessions or do not go through any learning session (no learning). After learning session, the participants then are provided with either a core or an extended choice set to make a choice to examine if learning from feedback would weaken the asymmetric dominance effect. The experiment uses a between-subjects experimental design (2 × 3; core set vs. extended set; no vs. low vs. high learning). The results show that the participants evaluate the overall qualities more accurately with learning. They learn the true trade-off rule between attributes (increase in knowledge) and become more consistent in their evaluations. Regarding the choice task, there is a significant decrease in the percentage of choosing the target option in the extended sets with learning, which clearly demonstrates that learning decreases the magnitude of the asymmetric dominance effect. However, these results are significant only when no learning condition is compared either to low or high learning condition. There is no significant result between low and high learning conditions, which may be due to fatigue or reflect the characteristics of learning curve. The present study introduces the MCPL paradigm in examining consumer learning and demonstrates that learning from feedback increases both knowledge and consistency and weakens the asymmetric dominance effect. The latter result may suggest that the previous demonstrations of the asymmetric dominance effect are somewhat exaggerated. In a single choice setting, people do not have enough information or experience about the stimuli, which may lead them to depend mostly on the contextual structure among options. In the future, more realistic stimuli and real experts' judgments can be used to increase the external validity of study results. In addition, consumers often learn through repeated choices in real consumer settings. Therefore, what consumers learn from feedback in repeated choices would be an interesting topic to investigate.
The purpose of this study is inquire the reaction and adaptability of the mathematically gifted student, in the case of introduce learning materials based on GeoGebra in real class. The study program using GeoGebra consist of 'construction of fundamental figures', 'making animation with using slider tools' (graph of a function, trace of a figure, definite integral, fixed point, and draw a parametric curve), make up the group report after class. Detection and monitoring of wildfires are essential for limiting their harmful effects on ecosystems, human lives, and property. In this research, we propose a novel method running in the Google Earth Engine platform for identifying and characterizing burnt regions using a hybrid of Sentinel-1 (C-band synthetic aperture radar) and Sentinel-2 (multispectral photography) images. The 2022 Uljin wildfire, the severest event in South Korean history, is the primary area of our investigation. Given its documented success in remote sensing and land cover categorization applications, we select the Random Forest (RF) method as our primary classifier. Next, we evaluate the performance of our model using multiple accuracy measures, including overall accuracy (OA), Kappa coefficient, and area under the curve (AUC). The proposed method shows the accuracy and resilience of wildfire identification compared to traditional methods that depend on survey data. These results have significant implications for the development of efficient and dependable wildfire monitoring systems and add to our knowledge of how machine learning and remote sensing-based approaches may be combined to improve environmental monitoring and management applications.

In order to overcome the limitations of the rule-based intrusion detection system due to changes in Internet computing environments, the emergence of new services, and creativity of attackers, network anomaly detection (NAD) using machine learning and deep learning technologies has received much attention. Most of these existing machine learning and deep learning technologies for NAD use supervised learning methods to learn a set of training data set labeled 'normal' and 'attack'. This paper presents the feasibility of the unsupervised learning AutoEncoder(AE) to NAD from data sets collecting of secured network traffic without labeled responses. To verify the performance of the proposed AE mode, we present the experimental results in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score, and ROC AUC value on the NSL-KDD training and test data sets. In particular, we model a reference AE through the deep analysis of diverse AEs varying hyper-parameters such as the number of layers as well as considering the regularization and denoising effects. The reference model shows the f1-scores 90.4% and 89% of binary classification on the KDDTest+ and KDDTest-21 test data sets based on the threshold of the 82-th percentile of the AE reconstruction error of the training data set.

Objective: Although balance training has been used as an effective ankle injury rehabilitation program to restore neuromuscular deficits in patients with chronic ankle instability, it is not effectively used in terms of motor learning. Attentional focusing can be an effective method for improving ankle kinematics to prevent recurrent ankle injuries. This study aimed to 1) evaluate the effects of attentional focus, including internal and external focus, and 2) determine a more effective focusing method for patients with chronic ankle instability to learn balance tasks. Method: Twenty-four patients with chronic ankle instability were randomly assigned to three groups (external focus, internal focus, and no feedback) and underwent four weeks of progressive balance training. The three-dimensional ankle kinematics of each patient were measured before and after training as the main outcomes. Ensemble curve analysis, discrete point analysis, and post hoc pairwise comparisons were performed to identify interactions between groups and time. Results: The results showed that (1) the external focus group was more dorsiflexed and everted than the internal focus group; (2) the external focus group was more dorsiflexed than the no feedback group; and (3) the no feedback group was more dorsiflexed than the internal focus group. Conclusion: Because dorsiflexion and eversion are ankle motions that oppose the mechanism of lateral ankle sprain, using the external focus method during balance training may be more effective in modifying these motions, thereby reducing the risk of ankle sprain.
The purpose of this study was to compare the predictive accuracy of traditional prediction models (methods) and machine learning algorithms in predicting suicidal behaviors. The research aimed to go beyond a systematic review level and scientifically examine the predictive capabilities of these two techniques through meta-analysis, analyzing variables identified through domestic research, particularly at the regional level. In order to achieve this, a total of 124 studies, including 50 studies utilizing machine learning and 74 studies employing traditional methods, were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the study revealed that the integrated area under the curve (AUC) for studies using traditional methods was .770, which was lower than the integrated AUC value of .853 for studies using machine learning. Particularly, studies conducted in Asia (AUC = .944) demonstrated higher accuracy compared to studies in Western countries (AUC = .820) and Korea (AUC = .864). Additional analysis of the moderating effects in domestic research indicated that a higher proportion of males and the prediction of suicide attempts were associated with higher prediction accuracy. On the other hand, prediction accuracy was lower when the prediction target was suicide deaths and when studies utilized neural network analysis. This study synthesized various research findings on the prediction of suicidal behaviors, verified the effectiveness of prediction using machine learning, and holds significance in exploring variables applicable in the context of South Korea.
