  • There are so many research literatures on conceptual change theory and the nature of concepts such as p-prims, mental model, ontological belief, and cognitive structure. Conceptual change means learning (Vosniadou, 1999; Duit;1999). It is necessary to review and elaborate existing conceptual change theories in order to explain the learning process and its implications. Therefore, we derived from reviewing literatures that learners construct new conceptual structure in response to given contexts at the same time activating their beliefs. We reviewed some mental theories that integrated cognitive and affective components and were based on framework/specific theory or information processing theory. We suggest learners' framework of conceptual structure and conflict model of conceptual structure. We expect to obtain effective ways of science teaching and learning and implications for cognitive conflict and conceptual change from using conceptual structure later.

  • This study performed a qualitative research on the transformative learning cases in vocational education for female baby-boom generation. The baby-boom generation that recently starts retirement is participating in vocational education for their re-employment. Even though their first goal of education was to find a job, they experienced in finding themselves through the actual education. Especially, female baby-boom generation learners were finding their own identity as an entity of social participation, getting out of the existing identity as wife, mother, and housewife. Such a learning experience was the process of recovering themselves, and in this process, new meanings of life were formed. In the results of the study, first, the learning experience in vocational education was the transformative learning to find themselves. They newly created themselves by critically introspecting their negative experience and perception of themselves, and then rearranging/cognizing the accumulated experiences. Second, the immersion in the transitional process to learner increased the motivation for learning and also drew learning about learning. Especially, they reinterpreted their educational methods and contents based on their learning experience in the vocational activity. Through the process, they learnt their past learning experience again. Third, the educational volunteer activity through learning club was a place for study to practice learning. Through this, the research participants realized that theories could not be separated from practice.

  • The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is yet to formulate a holistic strategy to realign the evolving technological infrastructures with organisational ambitions and adaptive knowledge of the workforce. This study attempts to create an understanding of the underlying processes adopted by technology-enhanced construction organisations to disseminate and maintain knowledge within the workforce in order to keep pace with the evolving construction technologies. The study adopted expansive learning and adaptive expertise constructs to help better explain workplace learning support structures for organisational effectiveness in a turbulent situation. The two theories were tailored to empirically evaluate three case study construction organisations that have embarked on technology-enabled organisational changes. The study concluded on the creation of a facilitating workplace learning environment to enable the workforce to adapt into and resolve any inherent contradictions and cognitive ambiguities of the changing organisational conditions. This could ensure that novel and conflicting features of the emerging technologies can be adapted across the myriad multi-functional project activities in order to expand the frontiers of the technological capabilities to address the eminent issues confronting the AEC sector.
