  • The Sitting Buddha Carved on Rockcliff (National treasure No. 201) in Bukjiri consists of porphyritic biotite granite, which was fractured by three joint sets of NE-SW, EW and NS directions. They produced a physical weathering that broke many parts of the Buddha and background. The chemical index of alteration is 59 to 61 from the major elements in the granite that was weathered into producing kaolin minerals from alteration of feldspars and biotite. With weathering degree, major element compositions increase in $SiO_2$ and MnO, whereas decrease in $TiO_2,\;{Fe_2O_3}^t,\;MgO,\;CaO\;and\;K_2O$. Change proporations of trace elements to $Al_2O_3$ increase in all transition elements, Rb and Y, whereas decrease in Li, Sr and Ba. REE pattern increases only in HREE. Particularly, a decrease in CaO, $K_2O$, Sr and Ba results in what they are effluxed to dissolve from feldspars by groundwater. The Buddha image has been deteriorated into joints, color changes, brown rusts, granular decay, microorganic smears by the such weathering causes as deformation, moisture, temperature variation and microorganic living. The moisture, which leaks along the joints in the granite, not only dissolve to decompose minerals but also grows many microorganism and is frozen over during winter. NE-SW and NS joint sets affect to seep in water during rainy days to deteriorate the image because they extend outward.

  • Most oil refineries and chemical plants have flare systems designed to mitigate pressure rises in process facilities in case of emergencies that require the release of large amounts of gas due to sudden process shutdowns such as power outages. However, the rise of the flame of the flare system causes civil complaints from residents around the factory due to visible pollution, and economic loss occurs in the company, which requires constant management. In this study, two items were diagnosed and analyzed in order to derive the optimal operation method of flare system. First, to detect the cause of the rise in flame height, the acoustic leak detector was used to check gas leaks in safety valves and pressure control valves. Second, to identify the cause of flame instability, the pulsation phenomenon was diagnosed through the CFD simulation and modeling experiments of the sealing drum. By confirming the leak at 4.3% of the safety valve and 10% of the pressure control valve, the cause of abnormal sparking was derived. The information presented in this study can be easily applied to any company that has a flare system, and is expected to prevent complaints and product loss.

  • New Korean-style clay roof tiles have been developed with a focus on significantly reducing the roof's weight while maintaining the strength, absorption rate, and freeze durability. The backflow of rain water through the gaps between roof tiles is prevented by employing baffles and a groove to accelerate water flow. With the new roof tiles, dry construction of a roof is possible without requiring soil. By using the dry construction method with the new roof tiles, a reduction in roof weight of more than 80% is possible compared to the conventional wet construction method with soil. In the case of a traditional Korean-style house with a building area of 99 square meters, the roof weight can be reduced from 135 tons to 24 tons. The new tiles satisfy the KS requirements and are more than 30% lighter than traditional roof tiles. A roof constructed using the new tiles showed no water leaks when exposed to typhoon-class winds with speeds of 17 m/s and 200 mm/h of rainfall, which is 60% higher than the Korea rainfall record. The new roof tiles also have advantages of economic efficiency, workability, maintenance, and aseismicity compared to previous Korean-style roof tiles.

  • The development of Internet technology and the deployment of smart devices provide a convenient environment for people, and this is becoming common with the technology called the Internet of Things (IoT). But the development of, and demand for, IoT technology is causing various problems, such as personal information leaks due to the attacks of hackers who exploit it. A number of devices are connected to a network, and network attacks that have been exploited in the existing PC environment are occurring in the IoT environment. When it comes to IP cameras, security incidents (such as distributed denial of service [DDoS] attacks, hacking someone's personal information, and monitoring without consent) are occurring. However, it is difficult to install and implement existing security solutions because memory space and power are limited owing to the characteristics of small devices in the IoT environment. Therefore, this paper proposes a security protocol that can look at and prevent IoT security threats. A security assessment verified that the proposed protocol is able to respond to various security threats that could arise in a network. Therefore, it is expected that efficient operation of this protocol will be possible if it is applied to the IoT environment.

  • Recently, several circumferential cracks were found in the control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles of U.S. nuclear power plants. According to the accident analyses, coolant leaks were caused by primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). The tensile residual stresses caused by welding, corrosion sensitive materials, and boric acid solution cause PWSCC. Therefore, an exact estimation of the residual stress is important for reliable operation. In this study, finite element simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of the tube geometry (thickness and radius) on the residual stresses in a J-groove weld for different CRDM tube locations. Two different tube locations were considered (center-hole and steepest side hill tube), and the tube radius and thickness variables ($r_o/t$=2, 3, 4) included two different reference values ($r_o$=51.6, t=16.9mm).

  • The Buddhist Triad Cave in Gunwi (National treasure No. 109) consists of porphyritic biotite granite, and it has been deteriorated into microorganic smears, white films, brown rusts, granular decay, color changes, and joints by the same weathering factors as rain, moisture, temperature variation and microorganic living. Main origin is probably the rain that leaks into the cave along joints in Palgongsan granite, and then its moisture grows many microorganism and is frozen over during winter. The granites around the cave regularly develop two NEE and NWW joint sets that are conjugate to be a joint system. The NEE set extends far away with narrow joint spacings and affects the leakage of the rains, and is divided into 4 joint zones, among which J$_{m}$ and J$_{3}$ immediately affect the leaking water into the cave. An extensional Joint, in northern wall of the cave, was formed by toppling of the block between J$_{m}$and J$_{3}$joint zones from widening the Jm aperture by roots of a big pine tree, and passes through the J$_{m}$joint zone. This bypass allows no circulation of small rain, but a good circulation of heavy rain from influx to the cave for a long pathway. Many Joints and cracks, in the ceiling near the cave entrance, immediately get through the J$_3$ joint zone, and have a good circulation of small rain 10 mm. Both J$_{m}$and J$_{3}$ joint zones are, therefore, chief influxes that cause leakage of the rains.

  • To date, the quality and safety of frozen bokbunja have not been clearly assessed. To produce high-quality frozen bokbunja, the optimal freeze-thaw conditions need to be explored. The most popular cultivar (Rubus occidentalis) in Korea was selected for this study. To determine the changes in the quality of frozen R. occidentalis berries, different freezing temperatures were used. The berries were frozen at -20, -45, and $-70^{\circ}C$ immediately after harvest. The drip ratio, hardness, pH, sugar content, color, and anthocyanidin content of the frozen and thawed samples were analyzed. The drip ratio, sugar content, and hardness of the berries correlated significantly with the freezing temperatures. The color and pH of the berries were not significantly affected by the freezing conditions. Frozen leaks between cells reduced significantly with decreasing temperatures. The freeze-thawing process significantly reduced the total aerobic bacteria and inhibited the growth of yeast/mold in the berries to about 2 log scales.

  • $^{137}Cs$ was investigated in river bottom sediments located in South-Han River basin and it was compared with international case studies to estimate the concentration level of $^{137}Cs$ in river sediment of Korea. The obtained values of $^{137}Cs$ which was analyzed by gamma-ray spectrometry were in the range of <$MDA{\sim}3.80{\pm}0.14Bq/kg{\cdot}dry$ and similar to the $^{137}Cs$ activities in soil of Korea. According to international case studies, $^{137}Cs$ activities were between 3.7 to $15,396Bq/kg{\cdot}dry$, when pollutants such as nuclear power plant accidents and radiation leaks were present near the rivers. The $^{137}Cs$ activities showed a variety of distribution depending on the country, when pollution occurs and survey time. Also, $^{137}Cs$ activities of river sediments without pollution sources were mostly less than $10Bq/kg{\cdot}dry$ in other countries. It was comparable with the obtained $^{137}Cs$ activities in this study. The obtained values provide useful information on the background concentration of $^{137}Cs$ in river sediment and will be able to use a basis for determining contamination of $^{137}Cs$ in the river.

  • Mineral oil has been widely used as an insulating oil for electrical transformers for a long time, but the necessity of employing new insulation oil such as vegetable oil has been increased due to urgent needs for the biodegradability when it leaks and also for the thermal stability at a higher operation temperature. Although specific periods are required between the production and consumption, there are still short of the data to prove the insulation oils' storage stability depending upon various circumstances and their resources. Thus, this paper demonstrates the insulation oils' oxidation characteristics of both mineral and vegetable oils when each was exposed to different environments for 12 weeks. From this test, some properties including total acid number, water content and dielectric breakdown were changed under specific conditions and resources. Vegetable oils showed higher hydrophilicity and water saturation than those of mineral oils due to their molecular compositions. Under sunlight exposure condition, all insulation oils oxidized and changed their properties when exposing to the direct light, regardless of the resource used.

  • In Korea, small reservoirs have been constructed for the supply of agricultural water, but most of them have been over 50 years from the year of construction. Aging agricultural reservoirs are being investigated for serious defects such as leaks and movements in slope, which are very vulnerable to safety. Accordingly, grouting methods are used to reinforce aging agricultural reservoirs in Korea. However, cement used as a grouting injection material consumes natural resources and generates a large amount of greenhouse gases during production. In addition, there is a problem that sufficient reinforcement is not made due to various factors such as the injection amount, the compounding ratio, the injection pressure, and etc. Therefore, due to these problems, the development of new materials and methods that can replace the grouting method and cement is required. In order to solve these problems, this study conducted an laboratory test on the surface stabilizer used to secure the stability of road and rail slopes. In addition, the program was analyzed and the reinforcing effect was examined when the surface stabilizer was used as reinforcement material for aging agricultural reservoir. As a result of the laboratory test, when the surface stabilizer is mixed, the increase of cohesion is possible up to 9% and there is no change in the friction angle. The results of the program analysis showed that the 1.0m reinforcement of slopes increased the factor of safety by 1.4 times, making it possible to reinforce the aging agricultural reservoir using surface stabilizers. And as a reinforcement method, it was analyzed that it is most appropriate to reinforce the slope and the bottom of slope simultaneously.
