  • To study the varietal differences of vegetative organs, yield and yield components along the periodical changes of rice variety in korea, this experiment was conducted in 1968. Eighteen used varieties were grouped into 6 varietal groups by the cultivated period as follow.: 1) Group I - Korean local varieties cultivated about 1907, 2) Group II - introduced varieties cultivated in 1907 - 1930, 3) Group III - introduced varieties cultivated in 1930-1960, 4) Group IV - improved varieties cultivated in 1930-1960, 5) Group V - introduced varieties cultivated after 1960 and 6) Group VI - improved varieties cultivated after 1960. 1. Varietal Group I showed the longest leaves, the largest leaf area, the lowest value of leaf area index and the highest value of flag leaf angle. Along the periodical changes of rice varieties the leaf length, the total leaf area and the flag leaf angle were decreased, and the leaf area index was increased. 2. Varietal Group I showed higher value of the length and the weight of leaf sheath than those of Group II, III, IV, V and VI. The length of every internode was longer in Group I than in the other varietal groups. The weight of every internode was shown higher value in Group 1. The length and the weight of every internode were decreased along the periodical changes of rice variety. 3. Varietal Group I and Group III showed the higher value of culm length, panicle length and the number of grain per panicle length and groups. Group IV, V and VI had the higher value of the number of panicle, the maturing rate and the 1, 000 grains weight. Varietal Group V and VI which are cultivated in recent years showed shorter culm and panicle length, higher value of the maturing rate and the 1, 000 grains weight, and intermediate in the number of panicle and the number of grain per panicle. 4. The lowest value of straw weight was found in Group I. The highest value of grain yield was shown in Group VI, intermediate in Group II, III, IV and V and lowest in Group I. Grain-straw ratio was shown highest in Group VI.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effect of the autumnal cutting times on the regrowth, the accumulated carbohydrate and dry matter yield of Italian ryegrass The results were summarized as follows: 1. In dry matter yield, the plot of earlier cutting was shown the highest yield (p<0.05), and that of the last-cutting was shown lower yield of dry matter than that the none-cutting plot. 2. TSC (Total Water Soluble Carbohydrate) content slightly decreased after the first cutting and gradually increased according to the regrowth, and then decreased again to the second cutting time. And also the TSC content levels of stubble, stem and leaf at one week before falling to sub-zero temperature were all the highest in the eariler cutting plot (p<0.01), and there was significant correlation between the TSC content level and the second harvested dry matter yield (p<0.05). 3. CGR (Crop Growth Rate) was decreased below $8^{\circ}C$. RLGR (Relative Leaf area Growth Rate) and NAR (Net Assimilation Rate) were both high during 30 days after regrowth, and low after regrowth in all plots. LAI (Leaf Area Index) rapidly increased during 50 days after cutting, and then slowly increased in all the plots, and maximum LAI was 3.4-5.8. Also dry matter yield increased in the plots having a high LAI to 70 days after cutting. 4. It was recognized that there were significant correlation between TSC, LAI, CGR, NAR, LWR (Leaf Weight Ratio) and the second harvested dry matter yield during the low temperature periods, and the degree of contribution to dry matter yield was in order of LWR>LAI>TSC>NAR>CGR.

  • This study was conducted to know the elects of light intensity of polyethylene net shading on the growth status, photosynthesis and root yield of ginseng plants. Polyethylene net shading of loft transmittance was the best one among light intensities of polyethylene net used in view of photosynthesis and decreasing of early leaf defoliation. According to increase of light intensity under the shading chlorophyll contents of ginseng leaves were decreased. As it was increased over 2 mg/g Photosynthesis and total saponin of leaves showed on the decrease remarkably. The rate of alternaria blight of ginseng plants showed the positive correlation between light intensity and leaking rate. The shading of 10% transmittance in root yield was increased by 40% in 6-year-old ginseng plant as compared with common straw shading, due to decreased missing plant and increased root weight.

  • Quantifying crop production is one of the most important applications of remote sensing in which the temporal and up-to-date data can play very important role in avoiding any immediate insufficiency in agricultural production. A combination of climatic data and biophysical parameters derived from Landsat7 ETM+ was used to develop a mathematical model for wheat yield forecast in different geographically wide Wheat growing districts in Egypt. Leaf Area Index (LAI) and fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR) with temperature were used in the modeling. The model includes three sub-models representing the correlation between the reported yield and each individual variable. Simulation results using district statistics showed high accuracy of the derived correlations to estimate wheat production with a percentage standard error (%S.E.) of 1.5% in El- Qualyobia district and average (%S.E.) of 7% for the whole wheat areas.

  • This research was conducted to know the appropriate leaf number of scion for tube grafting in context with survival rate and quality of seedlings, and early yield of $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ cluster of cherry tomato plants. Scions were grafted when having leaves 1~2 (LF-2), 2~3 (LF-3), or 3~4 (LF-4). The treatment LF-3 showed the highest survival rates and the best results in 6 factors among 12 seedling quality factors. In case of early yield, the treatment LF-2 showed higher yield than others with the big difference. Economic analysis showed that LF-3 is desirable in case of nursery while LF-2 is better in case of farmers. The compromising solution is that farmers buy a little expensive seedlings grafted at the leaf stage of 1~2 from nurseries in terms of win/win strategy.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of seeding date on the days and the accumulated temperatures to development stages, leaf emergence, and yield in spring-planted barley. Two barley varieties, Sacheon #6 in spring type (growth habit I) and Saechalssalbori in winter type (growth habit IV), were seeded on four seeding date, Feb. 23, March 4, March 13, and March 24. Growth periods to emergence, heading and maturity were shorten when seeding dates were delayed, except for the heading date of Saechalssalbori (winter type barley)at the later seeding date. The rate of leaf emergence was 0.1915 in a day, and was slightly high when seeding was delayed. The accumulated temperatures were 111-142$^{\circ}C$ for emergence, 683-756$^{\circ}C$ for heading, and 1274-1326$^{\circ}C$ for maturity. In general, the accumulated temperature to heading was higher in Saechalssalbori than in Sacheon #6 because the winter growth habit of Saechalssalbori was not removed perfectly, One-thousand grain weight and yield were reduced by delayed seeding. In order to reduce the yield when barley were planted in spying, it is desirable to select the spring type varieties, and to plant them as early as possible.

  • Four different levels of nitrogen were applied to 3 naked barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L.) Yonezawa, Baekdong and Yeongsanbori. Changes in chlorophyll content, green leaf area and light penetration were monitored after heading. Yield and its components were examined upon these changes. Increased level of N-application delayed the days to heading and ripening by 2-3 and 6-7 days, respectively, in Yonezawa. Yonezawa with a short culm was more resistant to lodging than two tall ones (Baekdong, Yeongsanbori) under heavy nitrogen applications. Yield was affected mostly by the number of spikes per unit area and 1, 000 grain weight at all levels of N-applications. The increase in dry weight of Baekdong was more than in that of Yonezawa. A sharp increase in dry weight was observed after 3 weeks of heading. Maximum yield was obtained at $N_2$ in Yonezawa (234kg/10a) and Baekdong (302kg/10a) and at $N_1$ in Yeongsanbori (332kg/10a). It appears essential to attain the sufficient leaf area and the increase in chlorophyll content for maximum yield. However, too much leaf area at the highest N level up to the ripening stage was not beneficial for dry matter production.

  • In order to find out the effects of the time and degree of defoliation on the seed yield, oil content and fatty acid composition of perilla seed, two cultivars, Namhae and Geumnung, were grown in two years, 1985 and 1987. Defoliation was initiated after 110 days from sowing with two-week interval. Defoliation degree was manipulated into four levels i.e. 0, 25, 50 and 75 per cent based on the total leaf area per plant. The results are summarized as follows: Flowering date, maturing date, culm length, culm diameter and branch numbers were not significantly influenced by the defoliation time and degrees, but by the cultivars. The higher levels of defoliation was made, the lower seed yield and 1000-seed were obtained, and either the earlier or the later time of defoliation, the less influence on seed yield were observed for both cultivars. Severe defoliation caused a significant decrease in oil content. The composition of unsaturated and saturated fatty acids was significantly decreased by severe defoliation (above 25 per cent). In conclusion, with a view to achieving higher seed yield and oil content with good quality, it is advisable to defoliate perilla leaf less than 25 per cent based on total leaf area at either or later growth stages.

  • In order to evaluate the effects of functional composts which include elvan, jade and loess, the growth and the yield of Chinese Cabbage and its content of sugar, nitrate and vitamin C were analysed. This study was conducted in lysimeter which was installed in the Experimental Farm of Dankook University. Total fresh weights of Chinese Cabbage were higher in the treatments of compost with mixture of elvan, jade and loess, while numbers of leaf was not increased in those treatments compared to control plot. Leaf length increased more than leaf width, specially in the evlan treatment. Fresh weight of leaf blade and midrib in outer leaf was highest in the plot of elvan treatment among the 6 treatments. Sugar content in the Chinese Cabbage showed lower in the treatment of compost with mixture of elvan, jade and loess compared to control plot. Vitamin content was high in leaf blade compare to those in midrib, and it showed highest value in the treatment of compost with mixture of jade. Nitrate concentration of leaf blade and midrib in the treatment of compost with mixture of loess was lowest at 2,021ppm and 2,235ppm respectively. It shows the effective function of mixture compost with jade, loess and elvan to decrease nitrate content in the Chinese Cabbage.
