We studied the chloroplast rearrangement, short-term regulation depending on the light conditions in plants, and the characteristic of photosynthic rate as affected by in Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. The chloroplast rearrangement of ginseng mesophyll cell was induced with the irradiation of blue light (400~500 nm) and through this process the rate of leaf transmittance increased 5~7.5%. The time to reach the maximum value of photosynthesis was shorter above 20 minutes with the blue light irradiation than that of the red light.
This study was conducted to investigate the optimum temperature and light intensity of photosynthesis and transmittance in the shade for better growth and root yield of ginseng. The 3-year-old ginseng plants grown under the shade of 5, 10 and 20% transmittance did not show any significant difference in the stem length, stem diameter, leaf area and root length. The root diameter markedly increased under the shade of 10% and 20% transmittance, and the root was the heaviest under the shade of 20% transmittance. The 6-year-old ginseng plants grown at 20% transmittance showed the largest root diameter but the root length was not influenced by transmittance. The root was heaviest in the shade of 20% transmittance.
To compare the growth pattern of ginseng plant under between conventional shading(light transmittance rate 3%) and polyethylene net shading(light transmittance rate 10%), the distribution of leaf area, specific leaf weight (S. L. W), leaf and stem dry weight and changes in light intensity were investigated in 2, 4 and 6 year old ginseng plant populations. Light transmittance rate(L.T.R.) was 3% at front line, 2% at middle line and 1.5% at rear line under conventional shading but it was 12, 10 and 8% under polyethylene net(P.E) shading, respectively. In 2 year old population, there was a little difference in the growth characteristics investigated between conventional and P.E. shading. In 4 year old field, the leaf area, stem and leaf dry weight decreased in large amount in the order of middle, and rear line on ridge under conventional shading, but with a little difference under P.E. shading. And these trends enlarged in 6 year old field with appearance of a large part of shoot over furrow from ridge planted ginseng. Root yield index was much lowered at the rear 3rd, 4th and 5th line of the conventional shading bed, but there was no yield difference among lines except 5th lines under the P.E. shading with higher yield by 28% than conventional shading.

Three leaf vegetables, namely green lettuce, red lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and red-veined chicory (Cichorium intybus) were grown in minigreenhouses covered with two new functional films and conventional polyethylene film (PE). Seedlings of leaf vegetables were transplanted in a plastic troughs filled with soil-perlite mixture. Two functional films were made from polyolefin (PO) material. Measurement of optical characteristics showed that polyolefin films have better transmittance for the photosynthetic active radiation (PAR, 400-700nm) and higher absorptance for the ultraviolet radiation (UV, 300-400nm) in comparison with the conventional PE film. After three months of utilization higher loss in PAR transmittance was observed for conventional PE film. Leaf vegetables growth was enhanced and yield was increased in greenhouses covered by new functional films.
This study was conducted to know the influence of plant age and cultural conditions such as plant population density and light intensity under the shading on the leaf shape of panax ginseng. The result obtained were as follows; 1) Leaf length(L)/maximum width(W) was no difference with different age of over 3-over 3year old plant, but that of 1 or 2-yearold was smaller than those of over 3-year old. The values of L/W showed in the order of 2 or 4,3, 1 or 5 leaflet. 2) Ratios of leaflet area to leaf area were 32.0% in leaflet 3, from 209.% to 27.9% in leaflet 2 or 4, and from 6.5% to 7.1% in leaflet 1 or 5. 3) The coefficients of variability for L/W and ratio of leaflet area to leaf area of leaflet 3 were smallest among leaflets. 4) There were significant differences between largest and smallest leaflet 3, leaf areas and ratio of leaflet 3 area to leaf area in same plant. 5) LW and ratio of leaflet 3 area to leaf area were not affected by plant population density. 6) It showed a tendency that the L/W was increased with increasing the light transmittance rate (LTR). The ratio of leaflet 3 area to leaf area of ginseng grown under 20% LTR was not different comparing to that of plant grown under 5% LTR, but it was significantly increased in plant grown at 100% LTR.
This study was carried out to develope the equations for estimating the areas of leaflet, leaf, and total leaf for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 years old ginseng, Panax ginseng, grown in field. The highest correlation coefficient was found between leaflet area and product of leaflet length and width(LW) in all leaflets although leaflet shape varied somewhat according to the position and plant age. It was possible to estimate area of the leaf, and total leaf by one central leaflet in a compound leaf. The equations for estimating the leafet, leaf areas of 1 year differ to those of over 2 years old plant, but there was no difference among those of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 years. The equations for 1 year old are A =0.64 LW, A' =A/0.38, and for 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 years old, A =0.60 LW, A' =A/0.32, A" =A' x number of leaves of central leaflet(A), leaf(A') and total leaf areas(A"), respectively. The estimation of leaflet, leaf, total leaf areas of ginseng plant grown under 20% light-transmittance rate was possible by using the equations mentioned.
This study was conducted to know the elects of light intensity of polyethylene net shading on the growth status, photosynthesis and root yield of ginseng plants. Polyethylene net shading of loft transmittance was the best one among light intensities of polyethylene net used in view of photosynthesis and decreasing of early leaf defoliation. According to increase of light intensity under the shading chlorophyll contents of ginseng leaves were decreased. As it was increased over 2 mg/g Photosynthesis and total saponin of leaves showed on the decrease remarkably. The rate of alternaria blight of ginseng plants showed the positive correlation between light intensity and leaking rate. The shading of 10% transmittance in root yield was increased by 40% in 6-year-old ginseng plant as compared with common straw shading, due to decreased missing plant and increased root weight.
To investigate the effect of light intensity on the growth of shoots and roots, water and chlorophyll contents in the ginseng leaf were determined at 5%, l0%, 20%, 30% light transmittance rate (LTR) with 1,2 and 4 year-old ginseng plants in the field. Stem length, size of the leaf, water and chlorophyll contents were decreased as the increase of the light intensity in all ages of ginseng plants. The degree of decrease was severe in the one year-old ginseng compared to that of 2, or 4 year-old ginseng, while there was no difference between the 2 and 4 year-old plants. Root weight per plant was highest at 5% LTR in the one year-old plants, while it was at 20% LTR in the 2 and 4 year-old plants. Generally, demand of light for the growth of one year-old ginseng was lower than those of 2 or 4 year-old plants there was no difference of it among the ginseng plants older than 2 years.
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has played an important role in assessing green plant biomass through remote sensing on global scale since the early 1970s. The concept of NDVI is based on the fact that green plants show higher reflection in near-infrared region than in visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. However, it is well known that the relocation of chloroplasts in plant leaf cells may dramatically change the optical properties of plant leaves. In this study I traced the changes in the reflectance and transmittance properties of Tobacco leaves at the wavelengths of 660 and 800 nm after a sudden increase in light intensity. The results showed that NDVI of leaves gradually decreased from 72.7% to 69.9% when exposed to a sudden increase in light intensity from 30 to $1,200{\mu}mol/m^2{\cdot}s$. This means that the error resulting from the physiological status of the plant should be accounted for a more precise understanding of ground truth corresponding to the data from the remotely acquired images.
To determine the optimum light intensity for growth of ginseng plants, change of temperature, moisture content in son, occurrence alternaria blight, defoliation rate, chlorophyll contents, and growth of shoots and roots were investigated under different light intensity such as 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% light transmittance rare(L.T.R.). The results obtained were as follows. 1. Maximum temperature under the shading was increased as the increase of light intensity, whereas soil moisture content decreased 2. As the increase of light intensity, stem and Peduncle length, leaf area, and chlorophyll contents decreased significantly but length and width of the leaf was not significant, while stem diameter, special leaf weight and chlorophyll a/chl. b ratio increased 3. Stem color was shown dark purp!e as the increase of light intensity. 4. Photosynthesis during the day was highest at 9 A.M. and decreased as time passed in all plots. The means of photouynthesis during the day showed in the order of 20%, 10%, 30%, 5% L.T.R., and optimum light intensity for highest photosxthesis was 18.4% L.T.R. by theoritical equation. 5. It was showed a tendency that alternaria leaf blight of ginseng plants was increased as the increase of light intensity. 6. Defoliation rate of ginseng plants was increased as the increase of light intensity, especially all plants were defoliated by late June without shading. 7. Yield percentage of the rear line was increased as the increase of light intensity. Root weight per plant showed in the order of 20%, 10%, 30%, 5% L.T.R., and optimum light intensity for the best yield was 18.5% L.T.R. by theeritical equation.
