Numerous connectors are used in automobiles for transmission of electrical signals across various electro-mechanical components. The connectors must operate with high reliability in order to minimize failures due to signal degradation. In this work, the effects of contamination at the contact interface of connectors used fur automobile crankshaft position sensor on the impedance change were investigated. An experimental set-up was built to simulate the electrical signal transmitted from the sensor to the engine control unit through a connector. Output from the connector was investigated using connectors contaminated with engine block residues and water droplets. It was found that slight contamination of the connectors could lead to significant signal degradation which can lead to engine failure. Also, the effect of water in the connector altered the signal severely. However, the signal gradually regained the original state as the water evaporated from the interface.

Conventional piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) senor has high sensitivity, but it is very brittle. Recently polymer films such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) have been used use as a sensor. The advantages of PVDF are the flexibility and mechanical toughness. Simple process and possible several shapes are also additional advantages. PVDF sensor can be directly embedded and attached to a structure. In this study, PVDF sensor was embedded in single glass fiber/epoxy composites whereas PZT sensor with AE was attached to single fiber composites (SFC). Piezoelectric sensor responds to interfacial damage of SFC. The signals measured by PVDF sensor were compared to PZT sensor. PZT sensor detected the signals of fiber fracture, matrix crack, interfacial debonding and even sensor delamination, whereas PVDF sensor only detected fiber fracture signals so far, because PZT sensor is much more sensitive than current PVDF sensor. Wave voltage of fiber fracture measured by PVDF sensor was lower than that of PZT sensor, but the results of fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis were same. Wave velocity using two PZT sensors was also studied to know the internal and surface damage effect of epoxy specimens.
In this study, the colorimetric sensor, polyester (PET) fabric dyed with lead (II) acetate (Pb(C2H3O2)2), was fabricated and characterized for the detection of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The surface morphology of the fabric was determined using scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The optical properties of the fabric were evaluated by measuring the variation in the blue value of an RGB sensor. The fabric showed a significant color change, high linearity (R2 : 0.98256), and fast response time (< 1.0 s) when exposed to H2S. This is because the sensor is highly porous and permeable to the gas. The fabric can not only be used as a hydrogen sulfide sensor but also be used to detect and prevent H2S influx using sticky tape on pipelines.
We analyzed a noise-sensitivity profile of a specific SQUID sensor system for the localization of brain activity. The location of a neuromagnetic current source is estimated from the recording of spatially distributed SQUID sensors. According to the specific arrangement of the sensors, each site in the source space has different sensitivity, that is, the difference in the lead field vectors. Conversely, channel noises on each sensor will give a different amount of the estimation error to each of the source sites. e.g., a distant source site from the sensor system has a small lead-field vector in magnitude and low sensitivity. However, when we solve the inverse problem from the recorded sensor data, we use the inverse of the lead-field vector that is rather large, which results in an overestimated noise power on the site. Especially, the spatial sensitivity profile of a gradiometer system measuring tangential fields is much more complex than a radial magnetometer system. This is one of the causes to make the solutions of inverse problems unstable on intervening of the sensor noise. In this study, in order to improve the localization accuracy, we calculated the noise-sensitivity profile of our 40-channel planar SQUID gradiometer system, and applied it as a normalization weight factor to the source localization using synthetic aperture magnetometry.

A ring-shaped lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoceramic sensor has been integrated with the Langevin-type piezoceramic driver of an ultrasonic wire-bonding transducer to form a smart transducer for in-situ measurement of three essential bonding parameters: namely, impact force, ultrasonic amplitude and bond time. This sensor has an inner diameter, an outer diameter and a thickness of 12.7 mm, 5.1 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. It has a specifically designed electrode pattern on the two major surfaces perpendicular to its thickness along which polarization is induced. The process-test results have indicated that the sensor not only is sensitive to excessive impact forces exerted on the devices to be bonded but also can track changes in the ultrasonic amplitude proficiently during bonding. Good correlation between the sensor outputs and the bond quality has been established. This smart transducer has good potential to be used in automatic process-control systems for ultrasonic wire bonding.

In this study, Acoustic emission(AE) sensors were fabricated using lead-free piezoelectric ceramics for prohibiting environmental pollution. Structure of AE sensors were designed as Langvin type air backing form. Here, the piezoelectic element was used as PZT(EC-65)(AE1) and NKN(AE2), respectively. The measured resonant frequency, the maximum sensitivity frequency and sensitivity of AE sensors were as follows ; 143 kHz, 29.4 kHz and 69.3 dB in AE1 and 179 kHz, 29.4 kHz and 66.3dB in AE2, respectively.

Piezoelectric energy harvesting has attracted increasing attention over the last decade as a means for generating sustainable and long-lasting energy from wasted mechanical energy. To develop self-powered wearable devices, piezoelectric materials should be flexible, stretchable, and bio-eco-friendly. This study proposed the fabrication of stretchable piezoelectric composites via dispersing perovskite-structured BaTiO3 nanoparticles inside an Ecoflex polymeric matrix. In particular, the stretchable piezoelectric sensor array was fabricated via a simple and cost-effective spin-coating process by exploiting the piezoelectric composite comprising of BaTiO3 nanoparticles, Ecoflex matrix, and stretchable Ag coated textile electrodes. The fabricated sensor generated an output voltage of ~4.3 V under repeated compressing deformations. Moreover, the piezoelectric sensor array exhibited robust mechanical stability during mechanical pushing of ~5,000 cycles. Finite element method with multiphysics COMSOL simulation program was employed to support the experimental output performance of the fabricated device. Finally, the stretchable piezoelectric sensor array can be used as a self-powered touch sensor that can effectively detect and distinguish mechanical stimuli, such as pressing by a human finger. The fabricated sensor demonstrated potential to be used in a stretchable, lead-free, and scalable piezoelectric sensor array.

Magnetic force driven six degree-of-freedom active vibration isolation system is developed. The velocity sensor using an electromagnetic principle that is commonly used in the vibration control is investigated since its phase lead characteristic causes an instability problem for a low frequency vibration. A lag-type compensator is adopted to reduce the phase lead and the stability test is performed by using a Bode analysis. The performance of the AVIS is validated by comparing with the passive isolation system by using the frequency responses.
As social perceptions of pets change, cultural attitudes toward pets are becoming more friendly. In particular, dogs have been living familiarly and closely with humans for a long time. In the changing times, various services are being used to improve the understanding of dogs and to prevent companion dogs and increase awareness of respect for life. Therefore, in this paper, we implemented a smart lead line in which IoT service and application technology are linked to the walking dog's automatic lead line. To do this, we developed a smart dog lead line by designing and implementing an integrated module in connection with heterogeneous sensors and linking it with a dog lead line. Finally, a smart dog lead line was used to collect the dog's biological signals in real time, identify the location of the dog, and provide a notification system. Through this, we believe that the culture of dog culture can be further grown.

Fiber-guided sensor system using a generator and a receiver can detect the amplitude of load or pressure. However, this type of sensor can show some difficulties in detecting the location of damages and pressure loadings. To overcome this weakness of this type, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor, which has an integrated ultrasonic generator and sensing part, was developed in this study. By using this sensor system, the location of mechanical loads can be exactly detected. Moreover, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor is more cost-effective than an ultrasonic fiber sensor using two piezoelectric transducers which are used as a generator and a receiver, respectively. Two applications of the ultrasonic active fiber sensor are demonstrated: cure monitoring of lead and measurement of liquid level. Present results showed that the active fiber sensor can be applied for various environmental sensing.
