  • Waste aluminum dross is a major waste in the aluminum scrap smelters and its components are mostly alumina and remained metallic aluminum. In the process to extract the remained aluminum from the waste dross by leaching with sodium hydroxide solution, residue is generated and its main component is alumina. This residue could be recycled into ceramic materials such as alumina castable refractories by going through a series of treatments such as washing, drying and roasting. In this study, a pilot plant was constructed and tested to demonstrate the developed technology. One thousand tons of waste aluminum dross could be processed, and about seven hundred tons of ceramic materials produced in the demonstration line. From the test run of the pilot plant, although it was confirmed that the developed technology could be applied to commercialization, several technical improvements were found to be necessary for reducing impurities such as Na, Fe and for reforming drying equipment.

  • Busuge is conventional snack food in Korea which is made from steeped glutinous rice. The effect of the steeping time on total acidity, viscosity, canons, phosphorus and raising power of glutinous rice was investigated. Total acidity was increased from 0.3 to 1.02% by steeping for 20 days at $10^{\circ}C$. Viscosity was increased from 25.5 to 32.4 cP after 14 days steeping and thereafter decreased to 23.5 cP. K, Na, Ca, Mg and P were leached 68, 67, 85 and 16% on 20 days steeping, respectively. K, Na and P were leached in the initial period, and Ca, Mg in the middle period of steeping. Raising power was increased according to the acidity increase and leaching of Ca, Mg and inorganic phosphorus during steeping. However, influence of the former on raising power was greater than the after.

  • We report the structure, thermal and magnetic properties of a non-equilibrium $Al_{0.6}(Fe_{50}Cu_{50})_{0.4}$ alloy powder produced by rod milling and chemical leaching. An X-ray diffractometry(XRD), a transmission electron microscope(TEM), a differential scanning calorimeter(DSC), a vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM), and superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID) were utilized to characterize the as-milled and leaching specimens. The crystallite size reached a value of about 8.82 nm. In the DSC experiment, the peak temperatures and crystallization temperatures decreased with increasing milling time. The activation energy of crystallization is 200.5 kJ/mole for as-milled alloy powder. The intensities of the XRD peaks of as-milled powders associated with the bcc type $Al_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}$ structure formative at $350^{\circ}C$ sharply increase with increasing annealing temperature. Above $400^{\circ}C$, peaks alloted to $Al_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}$ and $Al_{5}Fe_{2}$ are observed. After annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1h, the leached Ll specimen transformed into bcc $\alpha$-Fe and fcc Cu phases, accompanied by a change in the structural and magnetic properties. The saturation magnetization decreased with increasing milling time, and a value of about 8.42 emu/g was reached at 500 h of milling. The coercivity reached a maximum value of about 142.7 Oe after 500 h of milling. The magnetization of leached specimens as function of fields were higher at 5 K, and increased more sharply at 5 K than at 100 K.

  • Leaching of lead from glazed potteries was studied under various conditions. The amount of lead was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Lead content was tended to increase with lowering PH of the solution below pH 4, but it was not detected at above pH 6 during the storage period of six weeks. More lead was leached out from the glazed potteries with red color than those of black color at the same pH. No lead was detected when the medicine-boiling pots were boiled with water or $4\%$ acetic acid solution for six hours. A significant accumulation of lead, however, was shown in Kimchi and mixed solutions of organic acids when they stored in the glazed potteries more than three weeks, although they appeared lead-free by the Korean Industrial Standard Test Method.

  • To investigate the possible applications of plants to remediate heavy-metal-contaminated soil, a pilot experiment was performed for four years in a reclaimed dredging area using two Alnus species, i.e., Alnus firma and Alnus hirsuta. In a comparison of phytomass of the two species at two different planting densities, the phytomass of Alnus planted at low density was twice as high as that of Alnus planted at high density after four years. The Alnus species showed active acclimation to the heavy-metal-contaminated soil in a reclaimed dredging area. A. hirsuta showed greater accumulation of phytomass than A. firma, indicating that it is the better candidate for the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils. In the pilot system, Alnus plants took metals up from the soil in the following order; Pb > Zn > Cu > Cr > As > Cd. Uptake rates of heavy metals per individual phytomass was higher for Alnus spp. planted at low density than those planted at high density in the pilot system. Low plant density resulted in higher heavy metal uptake per plant, but the total heavy metal concentration was not different for plants planted at low and high density, suggesting that the plant density effect might not be important with regard to total uptake by plants. The quantity of leached heavy metals below ground was far in excess of that taken up by plants, indicating that an alternative measurement is required for the removal of heavy metals that have leached into ground water and deeper soil. We conclude that Alnus species are potential candidates for phytoremediation of heavy-metal- contaminated surface soil in a reclaimed dredging area.

  • This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of lignin addition on the characteristics of portland cement pastes. Lignin was added to cement at the ratio of 0.5 to 2.0% on dry weight basis. The specimens were cured for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. Distilled water and sea water were used as leaching solutions. pH and concentration of Ca, Na, and K ions in the leaching solutions were analyzed. Lignin addition of 0.5~2.0% to cement pastes decreased the leached concentration of Ca, Na, and K ions for distilled water, compared to the case without lignin addition. However, a significant pH variation of the leached solutions was not observed with the lignin addition. Lignin addition significantly improved the compressive strength of cement pastes, approximately 30~60% for curing in distilled water and 3~20% for that in sea water.

  • The possibility of producing Cr$_2$O$_3$powder from waste magnesia-chromium refractory was investigated by sulfuric acid reaction, alkali fusion, water leaching & purification and heat treatment. The effects of temperature, the amount of NaOH added and the flow rate of air on chromium extraction efficiency in an alkali fusion step were investigated. The fusion product was leached with methanol to solve free-NaOH, and then leached with water to produce a Na$_2$CrO$_4$solution. The purity of chrome(Ⅵ) oxides, prepared both from monochromate with an impurity content and monochromate purified with $CO_2$were also examined. The purified monochromate solution was reduced from Cr(Ⅵ) to Cr(III) with NaHSO$_3$solution. The reduced solution was neutralized with NaOH to produce Cr(OH)$_3$. Water washing was treated to eliminate Na$_2$SO$_4$from neutralized Cr(OH)$_3$slurry. The washed Cr(OH)$_3$was dried and thermally treated to produce Cr$_2$O$_3$powder. The properties like lightness and hue of Cr$_2$O$_3$fabricated in this study were L=47.47, a=-14.40 and b=17.21.

  • Growth and nitrogen retention of Persicaria thunbergii were investigated in the wetland microcosms which contained the plants growing on soil bed. Nitrogen solution was supplied to the microcosms with the same amount of $NH_4^{+}-N\; and\; NO_3^{-}-N$ at the rates of 0.00, 0.78, 1.57, 3.14g $N{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdor}wk^{-1}$ from May 1 to August 31, 1995. The solution was detained for 5 days to react with soil and plant and then allowed to leach. The contents of NH_4^{+}-N\;and\; NO_3^{-}-N$ in the leachate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, plant biomass, and soil characteristics were determined. Nitrogen retained by plant was estimated as the increment of TKN in plant biomass. The addition of 0.78 and 1.57g $N{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}wk^{-1}$ resulted in significant increase of plant biomass. However, plant growth was inhibited when nitrogen was added at the rate of 3.14g $N{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}wk^{-1}$. Overall, the plant biomass was positively correlated with the amount of nitrogen retained by plant and soil system. The amounts of $NO_3^{-}-N$ leached from the microcosms were 5~10 times higher than those of $NH_4^{+}-N$. While total nitrogen added ranged from 143.2 to 576.5g $N/m^2$, total leaching loss of inorganic nitrogen and nitrogen retained by plant was as little as 1.04~22.71g $N/m^2$, and 5.46~12.91g $N/m^2$, respectively. Then, the plant seemed to contribute to KDICical and microbial immobilization of nitrogen in the soil. Finally, it is suggested that a large portion of nitrogen added was lost into the air by denitrification and volatilizaton, and / or leached in organic forms.

  • Using three types of porcelain clays such as White, Blue, and Yellow clays, which were used as raw materials for Bae씨a, C Chungja, and common porcelains, the biological refinement by an enrichment culture of iron reducing bacteria was studied. | In the biological clay refining, amounts of leached iron increased as increasing sucrose $\infty$ncentration, which was s supplemented as a carbon and electron donor source for cell growth and iron reduction. Total amounts of the leached iron a and specific rate of iron reduction were dependent on the types of the clay. Strength and chromaticity of refined clays which a are important properties required for porcelain clays were improved as increasing sucrose concentration. The degree of s shrinking, however, did not changed. the redness among the chromaticity of refined clays is favorably reduced through the r ripening by the iron reducing bacteria. Considering iron removal efficiency and the change of physical properties, the optimal c concentration of sucrose was 4%(w/w) in the clay.
