This study examines how rock condition affects the variation of the chargeability and electrical resistivity of the rock. In the theoretical study, the relationship correlating chargeability with the variables affecting it is derived. A parametric study utilizing the derived relationship reveals that the size of narrow pores ($r_1$) is the most influential factor on chargeability, and the salinity of pore water ($C_0$) is the second. In the laboratory experiments, small scale rock fracturing zone is modelled using sand stone. Chargeability and resistivity are measured by changing the size of the joint aperture, the location of fractured zone and the existence of clay gouge and/or clay layer which shows lower chargeability than the sand stone layer in the multi-layered ground. Test results show that chargeability is controlled not by the rock fracturing condition but by the size of narrow pore ($r_1$) where each line of current flow passes through. Also, the chargeability decreases with increase of the pore water salinity ($C_0$). In conclusion, the ground condition can be identified more efficiently by measuring the induced polarization along with the electrical resistivity; identifying the existence of sea water, the layered ground and/or the fractured rock becomes more reliable.
In this paper, to study the stability of surrounding rock during roadway excavation in different rock mass structures, the physical model test for roadway excavation process in three types of intact rock mass, layered rock mass and massive rock mass were carried out by using the self-developed two-dimensional simulation testing system of complex underground engineering. Firstly, based on the engineering background of a deep mine in eastern China, the similar materials of the most appropriate ratio in line with the similarity theory were tested, compared and determined. Then, the physical models of four different schemes with 1000 mm (height) × 1000 mm (length) × 250 mm (width) were constructed. Finally, the roadway excavation was carried out after applying boundary conditions to the physical model by the simulation testing system. The results indicate that the supporting effect of rockbolts has a great influence on the shallow surrounding rock, and the rock mass structure can affect the overall stability of the surrounding rock. Furthermore, the failure mechanism and bearing capacity of surrounding rock were further discussed from the comparison of stress evolution characteristics, distribution of stress arch, and failure modes in different schemes.
Open-mode cracks could be commonly observed in layered rocks. A concept model is firstly used to explore the mechanism of the vertical cracks (VCs) in the top layer. Then the crack behaviour of the two-layer model is simulated based on a cohesive zone model (CZM) for layer interfaces and a plastic-damage model for rocks. The model indicates that the tensile stress normal to the VCs changes to compression if the crack spacing to layer thickness ratio is lower than a threshold. The results indicate that there is a threshold for interfacial shear strength that controls the crack patterns of the layered system. If the shear strength is lower than the threshold, the top layer is meshed by the VCs and interfacial cracks (ICs). When the shear strength is higher than the threshold, the top layer is meshed by the VCs and parallel cracks (PCs). If the shear strength is comparative to the threshold, a combining pattern of VCs, PCs and ICs for the top layer can be formed. The evolutions of stress distribution in the crack-bound block indicate that the ICs and PCs can reduce the load transferred for the substrate layer, and thus leads to a crack saturation state.
In deep excavations for creation of underground spaces, it would be difficult to predict earth pressure, especially multilayered ground including rock strata. The earth pressures and displacements on the retention walls are measured by load cell, strain gauge and inclinometer which were installed at struts or anchors at 4 deep excavation sites in Seoul area. In this paper, the measured earth pressure from the struts or anchors are compared with Peck's empirical values, and the coefficient of the earth pressures for each strata and horizontal wall displacement are investigated. The coefficient of earth pressure distribution, a(0.65zka), in the flexible and the rigid walls was about 74% and 88% of Peck's value respecitively. The measured earth pressure distributions for the 4 sites showed about 70%∼80% of Peck's empirical values and the average earth pressure coefficients based on the measured data were 0.3 for the felted layer, 0.23 for the weathered rock and 0.19 for the weak rock. The maximum w리1 displacements were found to be less 0.2% of excavation depth.

The important role of observational method in geotechnical engineering are emphasized together with the direction of future development, concerning successful application of the technique on the site investigation, design and feed back at various construction stages. Case histories on the application of feed back are introduced in order to achieve the most economical and reliable construction for tunnel, rock slope and deep excavations through feed back system at design and construction stages. Also the limitations and advantages of the observational method and the role of feed back system are discussed for construction of tunnel, rock slope and deep excavation in hard ground such as layered ground conditions including weathered, soft and hard rocks.
A numerical model for nuclide migration through fractured rock media has been developed. Nuclide transport with groundwater in rock fissures and the diffusion of nuclides into rock matrix are considered one-dimensionally . In the safety assessment of the repository for radioactive waste, this one-dimensional model by the finite-difference scheme, which enables us not only to use more realistic boundary conditions but also to model the nonhomogeneous rock medium as the multilayered media, can be used effectively with the analytical mode. The solution by the numerical model will be verified analytically, and then extended to the double-layered rock medium transport model.
The stiff top layer in a soil profile, which can happen in winter, may change the isolation effect of the wave barrier. The research scope of this paper is the investigation of the propagation of surface waves in layered soil with a stiff layer on its top, and the isolation effect of the solid stiff wave barrier. The investigations have been performed numerically by the Boundary-Element Method as a two-dimensional problem. A strip foundation vibrated harmonically in vertical direction was considered as the vibration source. Three soil profiles, a homogeneous half-space, two profiles with different thickness of stiff top layer, with two different types of wave barriers were investigated. The profiles with a stiff top layer show considerable reductions of the amplitude of the vibration in comparison to the homogeneous soil profile. The layered soil profiles with a stiff top layer do not show wave propagation velocities as high as they are expected from the material properties. Furthermore the vibration amplitudes in a frozen soil are much smaller with distance than in a non-frozen soil.
A dynamic analysis of a horseshoe_shaped tunnel near to cavity was performed to study the effect of the cavity on the dynamic behavior of the tunnel. In order to obtain the dynamic response of the tunnel embedded in a semi-infinite domain, a hybrid numerical technique was primarily developed. A dynamic fundamental solution in frequency domain for multi-layered half planes was derived and subsequently incorporated in the boundary element method. Coupling of the boundary element method for the far field with the finite element method for the near field is made by imposing compatibility condition of a displacement at the interface. The boundary element method is then coupled with the finite element method, which is utilized to model the near field including the tunnel and the cavity. In order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique, dynamic responses of single and multiply-layered semi-infinite structural systems are obtained by using the Kicker waveform and investigated in the limestone layer to find how the being and the location of the cavity affect the dynamic characteristics of the system.
A lot of underground construction projects have been conducted by economical, social and military purposes in Korea for the last three decades. As a result, magnificent amount of data were obtained from geological site investigations, laboratory and field tests, design and field monitoring. But up to now, these valuable informations were neither systematically stored nor utilized efficiently resulting in a great loss of time and money. In this study, a database system named GeoINFO was developed using Microsoft Access 97 for management of informations which can be obtained from underground construction. The developed database system is especially designed to cover three major types of underground facilities-tunnels, underground storages and rock slopes and has multi-layered tree structures for data input. The system also has a unique indexing system for efficient data search using Visual Basic code.

This study is analysis for adjacent structures and ground movement by deep excavation work. Underground Inclinometer has shown that deformation of increment is minor within to allowable limit. According to the measurements result of slope and crack for adjacent structures, a detached house showed bigger than hospital structure to deformation of increment. Variation of underground water level didn't effect so much to ground and adjacent structures movement because underground water flows in rock and didn't give the water press to propped walls. Measurement data of strut variation is within tolerance limit. Because excavation site's wall was strengthened suitably. This study will contribute in establishment of measurement standard and information-oriented construction during deep excavation in multi-layered ground including rock masses.
