Automated driving systems require a high level of performance regarding environmental perception, especially in urban environments. Today's on-board sensors such as radars or cameras do not reach a satisfying level of development from the point of view of robustness and availability. Thus, map data is often used as an additional data input to support these systems. An accurate digital map is used as a powerful additional sensor. In this paper, we propose a new approach for vehicle localization using a lane map and a single-layer LiDAR. The maps are created beforehand using a highly accurate DGPS and a single-layer LiDAR. A pose estimation of the vehicle was derived from an iterative closest point (ICP) match of LiDAR's intensity data to the lane map, and the estimated pose was used as an observation inside a Kalmanfilter framework. The achieved accuracy of the proposed localization algorithm is evaluated with a highly accurate DGPS to investigate the performance with respect to lateral vehicle control.
This paper describes the development of the $H_{\infty}$ lateral control system for an autonomous ground vehicle operating a limited area using the RTK-DGPS(Real Time Kinematic-Differential Global Positioning System). Before engaging in autonomous driving, map data are acquired by the RTK-DGPS and used to construct a reference trajectory. The navigation system contains the map data and computes the reference yaw angle of the vehicle using two consecutive position values. The yaw angle of the vehicle is controlled by the $H_{\infty}$ controller. A prototype of the autonomous vehicle by the navigation method has been developed, and the performance of the vehicle has been evaluated by experiment. The experimental results show that the $H_{\infty}$ controller and the RTK-DGPS based navigation system can sufficiently track the map at low speed. We expect that this navigation system can be made more accurate by incorporating additional sensors.
This paper presents a design of the controller for vehicle lateral dynamics using active yaw moment. Vehicle lateral motion is incorporated with directional controllability and stability. These are conflicting each other from the view of vehicle handling performance. To compromise the trade-off between these two aspects, we suggest a new control algorithm based on the sliding mode with time-varying switching surface according to the body side slip angle. The controller can deal with the nonlinear region in vehicle driving condition and be robust to the parameter uncertainties in the plant model. Control performance is evaluated from the simulation for the vehicle of real parameters on the road with various tire-road frictions.
This paper develops a 7 DOF vehicle model to study the effects of the active suspension on ride. The model is used to derive a control law for the active suspension using a full state linear optimal control technique. A wheelbase preview type active suspension is also considered in the control law derivation. The time delay between wheelbases is approximated using Pade approximation technique. The ride model is extended to a 14 DOF handling model. The 14 DOF handling model includes lateral, longitudinal, yaw and four wheel spin motions in addition to the 7 DOF ride model. A control law which is derived considering only ride related parameters is used to study the effects of the active suspension on a vehicle handling. J-turn maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a slower response in lateral acceleration and yaw rate, a bigger steady state lateral acceleration and an oversteer tendency. Lane changing maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a little bigger lateral acceleration but a much smaller roll angle and roll motion. Braking maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a much smaller pitch angle and pitch motion.
The aim of this paper is to design a two degree-of-freedom H$_{\infty}$ controller for lateral control of the vehicle. The object of this controller is to track the centerline of the reference lane. The controller is splited into two parts, feedback and prefilter. The feedback part is for both robust stability and disturbance attenuation, while the prefilter is for improving the robust tracking properties of closed loop system. This paper is consist of preface, background theory, dynamics of vehicle, controller design and computer simulation.ter simulation.
Lateral force of wheel is important parameter when we evaluate the safety of a railway vehicle on curved track. The lateral force of wheel is influenced by the steering performance of wheelsets. Generally, in passive type vehicles, the steering performance of wheelsets is influenced by the parameters like primary spring stiffness, wheel base, conicity of the wheel profile, etc. But, the steering performance of passive type vehicle has its limit. To overcome the limit of the steering performance of passive type vehicle, active steering technology is being developed. In this paper, we analyze the lateral force of wheel and the safety of the railway vehicle on curved track by adopting the active steering technology. As results of dynamic analysis for vehicle model equipped with active steering system, the lateral force of wheel is reduced and the safety is improved remarkably.
This paper presents collision avoidance using model predictive control algorithm. A model predictive control algorithm determines lateral tire force and yaw moment and steering angle input and differential braking input is determined from lateral tire force and yaw moment. A constraint for model predictive control is designed for obstacle avoidance. A objective function is designed to minimize lateral tire force and yaw moment input and to follow changed lane after collision avoidance. The performance of proposed algorithm has been investigated via computer simulation conducted to vehicle dynamic software CARSIM and Matlab/Simulink.
This paper presents steering system requirements to ensure the stabilized lateral control of autonomous driving vehicles. The two main objectives of a lateral controller in autonomous vehicles are maintenance of vehicle stability and tracking of the desired path. Even if the desired steering angle is immediately determined by the upper level controller, the overall controller performance is greatly influenced by the specification of steering system actuators. Since one of the major inescapable traits that affects controller performance is the time delay of the steering actuator, our work is mainly focused on finding adequate parameters of high level control algorithm to compensate these response characteristics and guarantee vehicle stability. Actual vehicle steering angle response was obtained with Electric Power Steering (EPS) actuator test subject to various longitudinal velocity. Steering input and output response analysis was performed via MATLAB system identification toolbox. The use of system identification is advantageous since the transfer function of the system is conveniently obtained compared with methods that require actual mathematical modeling of the system. Simulation results of full vehicle model suggest that the obtained tuning parameter yields reduced oscillation and lateral error compared with other cases, thus enhancing path tracking performance.
This paper examines the usefulness of a Brake Steer System (BSS), which uses differential brake forces for steering intervention in the context of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). In order to help the car to turn, a yaw moment can be achieved by altering the left/right and front/rear brake distribution. This resulting yaw moment on the vehicle affects lateral position thereby providing a limited steering function. The steering function achieved through BSS can then be used to control lateral position in an unintended road departure system. A 8-DOF nonlinear vehicle model including STI tire model will be validated using the equations of motion of the vehicle. Then a controller will be developed. This controller, which will be a PID controller tuned by Ziegler-Nichols, will be designed to explore BSS feasibility by modifying the brake distribution through the control of the yaw rate of the vehicle.
