It is a fact that the straightening of track alignment is one of the undoubted ways to improve the train speed on conventional lines, while that requires huge investment resources. Therefore, the operation of a tilting train as well as the minimum improvement of track is suggested as an effective and economical alternative way for the speed-up of conventional lines. Since a driving mechanism of tilting train is different from those of existing trains, in order to make sure its operation safety and stability on conventional line, the performance of track and roadbed must be preferentially evaluated on the conventional line. Furthermore, it is necessary to estimate the tilting-train-induced roadbed response in detail since the roadbed settlement can lead to the track deformation and even derailment. In this research, the patterns of wheel load and lateral force were monitored and analyzed through the field tests, and the derailment coefficient and degree of wheel off-loading were calculated in order to evaluate the tilting train running safety depending on the running speeds (120km~180km) on the conventional line. Moreover, roadbed pressure, settlement and acceleration were also observed as tilting-train-induced roadbed responses in order to estimate the roadbed stability depending on the running speeds. Consequently, the measured derailment coefficient and degree of wheel off-loading were satisfied with their own required limits, and all of the roadbed responses were less than those of existing high-speed train (KTX) over an entire running speed range considered in this study. As a result of this study, the tilting train which will be operated in combination with existing trains is expected to give no adverse impact on the conventional line even with its improved running speed.
River scour erodes the soil around the pier, reducing the lateral bearing capacity of the pier and lowering the stability of the structure. In this study, in order to examine the effect of scouring on the stability of the structure, an experiment was performed to measure the natural frequency of the pier according to the excavation of the surrounding ground. Impact vibration test was conducted on the pier with the caisson foundation of the Mangyeonggang Bridge, which is scheduled to be demolished. Accelerometers were attached to the top, center, and bottom of the pier and the acceleration responses were measured by hitting those three points. The experimental results showed that the top hit showed consistent and reasonable results of the acceleration responses according to the hitting position. The measured accelerations were converted to the frequency domain through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and then the natural frequency was determined. In addition, to analyze the scour effect on the natural frequency of the pier, the ground around the pier was excavated and the natural frequency change was analyzed. As a result, the natural frequency showed the decreasing tendency according to the excavation depth, but the decrease was small due to the large stiffness of the caisson foundation.
Busan is located at the mouth of Nakdong River and if an earthquake occurs, it is very likely that the damage by the earthquake will be worse as liquefaction can happen in the sand layer, builtup soil, and landfill ground due to amplification in the lower sedimentary layer that is well developed in the river mouth. Therefore, this study first examined the possibility of liquefaction in the replaced sand layer under breakwater using 14 earthquakes in 5.6-7.9 scale and artificial earthquakes including the seismic wave suggested in the standard specifications for seismic design of ports and fishing port facilities to evaluate the stability of breakwater which is the primary protective structure for port facilities against earthquakes. Second, analysis on characteristics of the seismic energy and acceleration response spectrum by size of earthquake was performed to suggest the most appropriate size of seismic wave for the condition in Korea. Third, finite element analysis was performed using the suggested seismic wave to study the characteristics of earthquake by finding the dynamic lateral displacement of breakwater and verifying the stability of structure and the displacement and forces occurring at geotextile. Results of the study showed that the possibility of liquefaction in the landfill and replaced sand layer, the dynamic lateral displacement of breakwater, and changes of geotextile are greatly affected by the subsurface ground (replaced sand layer).

To reduce the vibrations and shocks during the cargo transportation of high value-added goods, the vibration history was measured on the truck transportation section (Asan-Uiwang) and the freight train transportation section (Uiwang-Pusan). The internal vibrations of the container were obtained by attaching acceleration sensors in three axis directions (longitudinal, lateral. and vertical directions) on the front and rear bogies. The rail vibration profile (0.29Grms) proposed in ASTM D-4169 was approximately 50% higher than the truck vibration profile (0.54Grms). The overall vibration was 16% and 33 % lower in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, compared to the ASTM truck transport vibration profile. On the other hand, the vertical vibration measurement history partially exceeded the ASTM truck transport vibration profile over the range, 4 - 15Hz, and over 60Hz. The vibration measurement history of the cargo train was similar to that of the road. The longitudinal and lateral vibration history was lower than the ASTM D-4169 rail vibration profile, while the vertical history was over 30Hz.
In order to control the missiles by aerodynamics, control surfaces sometime called fins are used. Deflection angles of these fins are the right control variables of the aerodynamics, but aerodynamicists prefer to use analytic variables called aileron, elevator and rudder instead of these physical variables, because these three analytic variables dominantly influence on the roll, pitch and yaw channels of the missile maneuver, respectively, and each can be assumed a linear combination of four fin deflection angles. On that basis, roll, pitch and yaw autopilots for controlling the attitudes or lateral acceleration of the missile are designed, and as a consequence outputs of each autopilot are aileron, elevator and rudder commands, respectively. In the existing fin control scheme for the typical tail-fin controlled cruciform missiles, firstly these outputs are distributed to four fin defection commands, and after that four fins are actuated by fin controllers so that their deflections follow the commands. This paper shows that performance of such control schemes can be degraded significantly when fin actuators have certain physical constraints such as slew rate, voltage or current limit, uncertainty of actuator dynamics, and so on, and propose a new control scheme which alleviates such problems. This scheme can be widely applied to various fin actuation systems. But in this paper, for convenience, tail-fin controlled cruciform missile is taken as an example, and it is shown that a proposed control scheme gives better performance than the existing one.

This study experimentally and analytically examines the seismic vulnerability of steel rack storage frames subjected to Korea earthquakes (2016 Gyeongju earthquake and 2017 Pohang earthquake). To achieve this aim, this study selects a three-story, one-bay steel rack frame with a typical configuration of rack frame in Korea. Firstly, the local behavior for frame components is examined by performing monotonic and/or cyclic load tests and the global response and dynamic characteristics of the subject rack frame are investigated by conducting a shaking table test. The analytical model of the rack frame is then created based on the experimental results and is used to perform nonlinear time history analyses with recorded Korea earthquakes. The seismic demand of the rack frame is considerably affected by the spectral acceleration response, instead of peak ground accelerations (peak floor accelerations). Moreover, the collapse fragility curve of the rack frame is developed using incremental dynamic analyses for the Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes. Fragility results indicate that the ground motion characteristics of these earthquakes do not significantly affect the frame vulnerability at the collapse state.

The mathematical modeling on the free vibration and stability of a multi-stepped shaft of turbo compressor is performed in this study. The multi-stepped shaft is modeled as a non-uniform Timoshenko beam supported by anisotropic bearings. It is assumed that the shaft is spinning with constant speed about its longitudinal axis and subjected to a conservative axial force induced by front and rear impellers attached to the shaft. The structural model incorporates non-classical features such as transverse shear and rotary inertia. A structural coupling between vertical and lateral motions is induced by Coriolis acceleration terms. The governing equations are derived via Hamilton's variational principle and the equations are transformed to the standard form of an eigenvalue problem. The implications of combined gyroscopic effect, conservative axial force, bearing stiffness and damping are revealed and a number of pertinent conclusions are outlined. In this study analytical results are compared with those from ANSYS finite element analysis and experimental modal testing.

As increase of height and slenderness of buildings, serviceability design criteria such as maximum lateral drift and wind-induced vibration level play an important role in structural design of high-rise buildings. Especially, wind-induced vibration is directly related to discomfort of occupants. However, no practical algorithm or design method is available for structural designers to control the acceleration level due to wind. This paper presented a control method for wind-induced vibration of high-rise buildings using the resizing algorithm. The level of vibration due to wind is calculated by well known estimation rules of ASCE 7-02, NBCC 95, SAA83, and Solari method. Based on the fact that the level of wind-induced vibration is inversely proportional to the magnitude of natural periods of buildings, in the design method, natural periods of a high-rise building are modified by redistribution of structural weight according to the resizing algorithm. The design method is applied to wind-induced vibration control design of real 42-story residential building and evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness.

This paper proposes a new method for predicting the derailment of a running train under cross-wind conditions, using the single wheelset derailment theory. The conventional theories used for predicting the derailment due to cross-winds were developed under the assumption that derailment will always be of the roll-over type, thus neglecting other possible types such as wheel-climbing, which may occur under special driving conditions. In addition, these theories do not consider running conditions such as dynamic wheel-rail interactions and friction effects. The new method considers the effects of dynamic wheel-rail interaction as well as those of lateral acceleration, rail cant, and cross-winds. The results of this method were compared and verified with those of the conventional methods and numerical simulations.
Background : Complicated diabetic patients show impaired, delayed wound healing caused by multiple factors. A study on wound healing showed that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was effective in normal tissue regeneration. Nonetheless, there is no evidence that when platelet-rich plasma is applied to diabetic wounds, it normalizes the diabetic wound healing process. In this study, we have analyzed matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9 expression to investigate the effect of PRP on diabetic wounds. Methods : Twenty-four-week-old male Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty rats were provided by the Tokushima Research Institute. At 50 weeks, wounds were arranged in two sites on the lateral paraspinal areas. Each wound was treated with PRP gel and physiologic saline gauze. To determine the expression of MMP-2, MMP-9, which was chosen as a marker of wound healing, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed and local distribution and expression of MMP-2, MMP-9 was also observed throughout the immunohistochemical staining. Results : RT-PCR and the immunohistochemical study showed that the levels of MMP-2, MMP-9 mRNA expression in PRP applied tissues were higher than MMP-2, MMP-9 mRNA expression in saline-applied tissues. MMP-9 mRNA expression in wounds of diabetic rats decreased after healing began to occur. But no statistical differences were detected on the basis of body weight or fasting blood glucose levels. Conclusions : This study could indicate the extracellular matrix-regulating effect observed with PRP. Our results of the acceleration of wound healing events by PRP under hyperglycemic conditions might be a useful clue for future clinical treatment for diabetic wounds.
