  • This study conducted scientific analyses on eight objects of wooden lacquerware to understand the manufacturing techniques of wooden lacquerware in the late Joseon Dynasty. The results of lacquer layer analysis with a microscope and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry revealed that most samples were composed of 1-3 lacquer layers. Moreover, a red-colored layer was found to be red ocher and cinnabar, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis was carried out to determine the components of the lacquer layer. The detected components were mostly lacquer and partially cashew shell nut liquid.

This makes us miss the past when everything is simple and the standards are very clear and being attracted by the metaphorical culture symbolizing something from the past, like memories of youth, fantasies, fairy tales or myths and we are now having a great interest in the joy of life and the affluent life. Influenced by this kind of tendency in modern society, the minimalism, which had the great influence in the nineties, went out of fashion and at last the romantic susceptibility seems to be the trend forming the major mood of the late 20th century - the early 21st century. This study focus is: (1) the theoretical aspects of romantic images such as the concept, the historical tendency and the character are considered. (2) the variety and multiplicity of the romantic images is discussed after the romantic image is classified into four types of retro character, natural character, ethnic character, erotic character according to major trends in our modern. The purpose of this study is to understand the romantic images in modern fashion, by analyzing the fashion trends together with the various features of romantic images.

  • This Study is about the tradition of Organic Medievalism expressed in Modern Architecture. The concept of Medievalism is an attitude to revive the social and physical settings on the Middle Ages. The Organic Medievalism in Modern Architecture was to be explained as the two tendencies; one was toward the rational structural logic of the medieval architecture being re-interpreted into the Modern Architecture and the other was toward the organic and fantastic shape of the Modern Architecture, closely connected with nature-friendly and organic shape of medieval city and buildings. The structural logic of the medieval architecture became systematized by the French architects, Viollet-le-Duc and Auguste Choisy. The principle has been applied to the design of the Art Nouveau, Louis Kahn and so-called the High-Tech Architecture creating the aesthetics of its own by exposing the building structure. The other was used as the elements to represent the characteristics of the Art Nouveau architects, and then served as the background of the creation of the avant-garde architecture of Germany. The ideal has been serving as the great idealistic fundamentals by the so-called Archigram and Deconstruction at the late half of the 20th century.

  • This study attempts to analyze gender gaps in voter turnout for three different types of elections held since 2017 at the aggregate level using the Central Election Management Commission's turnout data, paying attention to the importance of women's voting. The findings are as follows. First, modern gender gaps in voter turnout at the aggregate level are confirmed in most regions regardless of election types. Second, the gender gap in turnout varies with age. The gender difference is verified in the "widowhood effect," where turnout decreases in the oldest-old. In the new voter group, modern gender gaps appear in most regions. The reversed gender difference in turnout in the late 20s, which reflects the Korean society's characteristics, is confirmed in all elections. Third, it is unclear whether the reverse gender gap in turnout becomes more pronounced in urbanized districts. As urbanization progressed, modern gender differences in voter turnout across age groups are observed at the population-based size level. Paradoxically, the modern gender gap tends to be weak and turns into the traditional gender gap in younger age groups (in the late thirties) in Gangnam-gu and Seocho-gu, the most modernized districts in Seoul. These results show that the modern gender gap in turnout is now a common phenomenon and continues to be strengthened by newly recruited voters in Korea. Thus we should pay more attention to female voters' political behavior and a new approach beyond the developmental theory to understand the causal mechanism to generate the modern gender gap in voter turnout.

  • Since the late 19th Century, modern architecture of definite figure and form shared similar concepts on space and from with the abstract art, pursuing the geometric purity and the abstraction. So the reductive approach had been taken in modern architecture as well as on modern art. The 1960 minimal art had experimented an extreme reduction with the cubic forms and the plane canvases, embodying so called minimal-art content, it was just another version of modernism art interpreted by the extreme reduction. The reduction is a characteristics of modernism adopted in every art field, including architecture. Not from the apparent, but from the essential quality of architectural form, figure and space resulting from the reductive approach, a building in this trend schould be judged and appreciated. In many aspects, Korean traditional architecture has been shown the characteristics of Minimal Architecture. With these points of view, this study analyzes characteristics of Korean traditional architecture with above contents through the form and space.

  • Obviously the speed of dissemination of new, modern ideas in Jiangnan was closely related to the development of transportation. Looking back at the history, the backwardness of transportation in the early modern Jiangnan restrict the dissemination of new ideas in this region and then the situation changed a lot since the 1890s, when the spatial distance between Shanghai and Jiangnan was remarkably shortened, the dissemination of new ideas was accelerated, and the new ideas in return significantly influenced the Jiangnan society. It was the constantly improved transportation that facilitated the diversification of channels disseminating information and made the dissemination itself faster. As a consequence, the new ideas, knowledge, and things were rapidly disseminated and popularized in Jiangnan, thereby giving impetus to the social changes in this region.

  • Though modern banking organs were established in Korea with the Kanghwa Treaty as a momentum, the benefit of financing at that time, which was mainly given to merchants and industrialists and traders, was extremely limited to the fishermen. The fishermen who were out of favor with the benefit of financing of modern banking organs were forced to rely on high interest loans, a category of usury capital, issued by the middlemen (the Kaekju) who lent them the deficit of their necessary funds. The fact was that in the field of fisheries the middlemen who issued usury capital played the leading part in fisheries financing of the Late Yi Dynasty. The middlemen, however, sqeezed a part or all of surplus products and on occasion even necessary products out of the fishermen by means of outward compulsion of economy. Moreover they put the fishermen further in trouble by putting-out system. In order to keep on with the production of aquatic products, the fishermen with little capital and no property established the antinomic rotations with the middlemen whose disadvantageous terms they were inevitably to accept. Thus the middlemen who did business with the fishermen exercised their authority over them, securing a strong activity foundation in the field of fisheries. But the traditional form of the Kaekiu was transformed and gradually declined in the field of fisheries according as the market rules were proclaimed in 1914.

  • This study was carried out to get infirmation for the breeding varieties and developing the cultural methods with representative 32 cultivars which were diffused from 1900 to 1982 and two cultural methods which were old one i.e., low dressing and late planting and modern one i.e., medium dressing and early planting. Duration of transplanting between cultural practices were 15 days but the duration of heading date were 5days. Panicle projecting duration was 5-10 days in all cultivars, especially, it is 5 days in early maturing varieties, 6-7 days in medium maturing varieties and 7-10 days in late maturing varieties. Periods from transplanting date to effective ripening date were 99.8 days in low dressing and late planting method, 106.2 days in modern one but the periods from heading date to effective ripening date were 31.4 days in low dressing and late planting method, 30.2 days in modern one. Ripening speed was very active from 5 to 10 days after heading and the daily increase of 1000 grain weight was from 847.8mg to 1130mg in that time and it slightly increased from 5 to 35 days after heading in Japonica varieties but increased after heading and suddenly decreased at 30 days after heading in Indica/Japonica varieties. Meteorological factors (temperature and amount of solar radiation) were positively correlated with the ripening speed but negatively correlated with the period of physiological and effentive ripening.
