  • 'Mogwoo', a new high yield and whole crop silage rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivar, was developed by the rice breeding team of the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, Suwon, Korea, from 1999 to 2009, and was released in 2010. It was derived in 1999 from a cross between Dasanbyeo, having a high yield, and Suweon431/IR71190-45-2-1. A promising line, SR25848-C99-1-2-1, selected by the pedigree breeding method, was designated the name of 'Suweon 519' in 2007. This cultivar has about 155 days of growth period from seeding to heading, and is tolerance to lodging, with erect pubescent leaves as well as a long and thick culm. This cultivar has the same number of tillers per hill and higher spikelet numbers per panicle compared to Nokyang. 'Mogwoo' has longer leaves compared with other Tongil-type varieties. This new variety is resistant to grain shattering, leaf blast, bacterial leaf blight, and small brown planthopper. The biomass yield of 'Mogwoo' was 1,956 kg/10a in a regional test over three years. The result shows that 'Mogwoo' is adaptable to central and south-east plain areas of Korea.

  • Perilla is an excellent oil crop for linolenic acid production but still needs more research to improve grain yield and chemical properties. We tried to estimate the possibility for improving grain yield and its quality by applying nitrogen top dressing(4kg per 10a) at 5 days after flowering stage of perilla, using a cultivar Yujin. This study investigated the growth characteristics and seed quality. Nitrogen top dressing on the flowering stage has little affected on such traits as length, node number and diameter of main stem, and branch, cluster and capsules numbers per plant. But compared with standard cultivation as a control, top dressing showed more leaf chlorophyll content by 85%, higher 1000-grain-weight by 31%, and one day extension of maturing period; consequently, grain outyielded by 60% with 123kg per 10a. Seed chemical components also showed 33.3% protein and 48% oil contents that were 11.5% and 6.2% higher than those of control, respectively. Also by top dressing, saturated fatty acid (palmitic and stearic acid) decreased and linoleic acid among unsaturated fatty acids increased. It is concluded that nitrogen topdressing at late flowering stage promotes grain yield and quality of perilla.

  • The Experiments were conducted by moderate season culture of each of early, medium and late maturing varieties which were considered to be of strong salt tolerance in low and high salty reclaimed areas (0.2% at the May). This study was carried out to investigate the proper nitrogen fertilizer level and seeding rates at reclaimed saline land in Korea. The proper seeding rates were $40kg\;ha^{-1}$ in 0.2% saline land. The dry matter production of barnyard millet was possibly estimated by exponential functions of $Y=0.0098X^2+0.7030X+2.6267$. Effects of nitrogen rate on agronomic characteristics, forage yield, and chemical composition of barnyard millet to reclaimed tidal land are summarized as follows: The proper nitrogen fertilizer level was $200kg\;ha^{-1}$ in 0.2% saline land. N was absorbed actively before the emergence of the barnyard millet but showed relative decrease thereafter. The early growth of the barnyard millet was inhibited, resulting in the favorable late growth, increased panicle weight and ratio of matured grain. These results suggest that barnyard millet is the most forage crops for cultivation on reclaimed tideland in view of the good emergence and forage production.

  • This study was conducted in order to examine relationships between the viviparous germination ability and the antioxidative system in rice seeds and seedlings. Enzyme activities was compared among the four varieties with different viviparous germination ability from the early or mid-late maturity group. $\alpha$-Amylase activities correlated with the viviparous germination rate (VGRs) and $\alpha$-amylase activity in seeds of 40 days after heading (DAH) was highest in Dongjinbyeo among midlate maturing varieties (MLMVs) and in Daeseongbyeo among EMVs. $\alpha$-Amylase activity in dry mature seeds was also higher in varieties with higher VGR. Glucose contents in viviparously germinating seeds and mature dry, seeds were higher in varieties with higher VGRs. Cat-alase activities did not correlate with the VGRs in both maturity groups. However, peroxidase activities in viviparously germinating seeds were higher in varieties with higher VGRs.

  • Global air temperature has risen by $0.6^{\circ}C$ over the last one hundred years due to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases. Moreover, this global warming trend is projected to continue in the future. This study was carried out to evaluate spatial variations in rice production areas by simulating rice-growth and development with projected high resolution climate data in Korea far 2011-2100, which was geospatially interpolated from the 25 km gridded data based on the IPCC SRES A2 emission scenario. Satellite remote sensing data were used to pinpoint the rice-growing areas, and corresponding climate data were aggregated to represent the official 'crop reporting county'. For the simulation experiment, we used a CERES-Rice model modified by introducing two equations to calculate the leaf appearance rate based on the effective temperature and existing leaf number and the final number of leaves based on day-length in the photoperiod sensitive phase of rice. We tested the performance of this model using data-sets obtained from transplanting dates and nitrogen fertilization rates experiments over three years (2002 to 2004). The simulation results showed a good performance of this model in heading date prediction [$R^2$=0.9586 for early (Odaebyeo), $R^2$=0.9681 for medium (Hwasungbyeo), and $R^2$=0.9477 for late (Dongjinbyeo) maturity cultivars]. A modified version of CERES-Rice was used to simulate the growth and development of three Japonica varieties, representing early, medium, and late maturity classes, to project crop status for climatological normal years between 2011 and 2100. In order to compare the temporal changes, three sets of data representing 3 climatological years (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100) were successively used to run the model. Simulated growth and yield data of the three Japonica cultivars under the observed climate for 1971-2000 was set as a reference. Compared with the current normal, heading date was accelerated by 7 days for 2011-2040 and 20 days for 2071-2100. Physiological maturity was accelerated by 15 days for 2011-2040 and 30 days for 2071-2100. Rice yield was in general reduced by 6-25%, 3-26%, and 3-25% per 10a in early, medium, and late maturity classes, respectively. However, mid to late maturing varieties showed an increased yield in northern Gyeonggi Province and in most of Kwangwon Province in 2071-2100.

  • To obtain fundamental informations on cotton breeding efficiences for Korea, individual genetic relationships and interrelationships between the agronomic characteristics of Upland cotton were investigated. These experiments were couducted at the Mokpo Branch Station $(34^{\circ}48'N, $ $126^{\circ}23'E$ and altitude of 10m above sea level) from 1969 through 1972. Heterosis, combining ability, dominance and recessive gene action, genetic variance, and phenotypic and genotypic correlation were investigated by $F_1'S$ from an 11-parent partial diallel cross and the segregating $F_2$ and $F_3$ populations of the cross Paymaster times Heujueusseo Trice. The following points resulted from this study, 1. Heteroses for number of bolls per plant and lint yield were significant at 27, 84% and 37.26%, respectively. No other character had significant heteroses. 2. The GCA estimates for all studied characteristics were higher than the SCA estimates. Varieties with high GCA effects were Suwon 1 for earliness, Paymaster and Arijona for high lint percent, and Arijona for long fiber, etc, 3. SCA estimates for lint yield varied widely in crosses with Mokpo 4, Mokpo 6 and Heujueusseo Trice. Those crosses with the highest SCA effects were combinations with large characteristics differences, Example of these crosses are Mokpo 4 times Acala 1517W, Mokpo 4 times D. P. L. and Heujueusseo Trice aud Paymaster. 4. Early-maturing varieties were completely dominant to late-maturing varieties in some combinations while other crosses gave intermediate phenotypes. These results suggest additive genetic action by multi-genes. Heujueusseo Trice, Mokpo 6, and Suwon 1 showed highest degree of dominance for earliness. 5. There were no significant trends for inheritance of weight of boll and 100 seeds weight. 6. Long staple was partially to completely dominant to short staple. Though there were single gene ratios the rate of dominance decreased in the $F_2$ and $F_3$ populations in the cross between the long staple variety Paymaster and the short staple variety Heujueusseo Trice. Diallel cross $F_1$ hybrids showed complicated allelic gene action for staple length. Various dominance degree were shown by varieties. 7. Number of bolls per plant indicated strong over-dominance and small non-allelic additive gene action. 8. Lint Yield was characterized by over-dominance and by multiple non-allelic-gene action. High-yielding varieties were dominant to low-yielding ones. However, the low-yielding variety Heujueusseo Trice showed over-dominance, indicating different reactions according to the varieties and combinations. 9. Broad sense heritability for days to flowering was 34-39% while narrow sense heritability was 11%. Large variations of individual plants caused by Korean climatic conditions cause this situation. Heritability estimates for weight of boll was 30% for broad sense and 22% for narrow sense. 10. Heritability estimates for staple length and lint percent were very high suggesting strong selection effects. 11. Narrow sense heritability estimates for number of bolls per plant was 30% in the diallel cross $F_1$ hybrids and 36% in the $F_2$ population of the special cross. Broad sense heritability was estimated at 67% suggesting that. 12. Heritability estimates for lint yield was low due to high over-dominance in the diallel cross $F_1$ hybrids. Heritability estimates for yield was low in the $F_1$ hybrids but high in the $F_2$ and $F_3$ populations. 13. Phenotypic and genotypic correlations between lint percent and days to flowering and between staple length and days to flowering were high in the $F_1, $ $F_2$ and $F_3$ populations. Late-maturing varieties and individuals had long staple and high lint percent in general. As the correlation between days to flowering and lint yield was extremely low, the two traits were considered independent of each other. Days to flowering and number of bolls per plant were negatively correlated in the $F_3$ population, indicating early-maturing individual plants with many bolls may be readily selected. 14. Phenotypic and genotypic correlations between lint percent and staple length were high in $F_1, $ $F_2$ and $F_3$ populations. Accordingly, long staple varieties were high in lint percent. It was recognized that lint yield and lint percent were positively correlated in the diallel cross $F_1$ hybrids, and lint percent and staple length were positively correlated in the $F_2$ population, indicating that lint percent and staple length affect lint yield. 15. Lint yield was significantly and positively phenotypically correlated with number of bolls per plant in $F_1, $ $F_2$ and $F_3$ populations. A high genotypic correlation was also noted indicating a close genetic relationship. The selection efficiencies for a high-yielding variety can be increased when individual plants with many bolls are selected in later generations. The selection efficiencies for good fiber quality can be enhanced when individuals with long staple and high lint percent are selected in early generations.

  • This experiment was carried out as a part of the studies on reasonable application of nitrogen in rice plant to determine: (I) Nitrogen absorption. and rooting of rice seedlings as affected by urea foliar application at late seedling stage (II) Effect of leaf prunning and foliar application of urea at late heading stage on the maturation and yield of rice (III) Effect of foliar application of urea and its time during the stage of ear formation on yield of rice plant. Results obtained are summarized as follows. Exp.I: Nitrogen absorption and rooting of rice seedlings as affected be urea foliar application at late seedling stage. 1 : The foliar application of urea plots$(T_{1},T_2)$ snowed mare N-content than non-urea foliar application plot(T0) at lane seedling stage, being significant among treatments and foliar application of urea seemed more effective in increasing the N-content of seedlings. and promoted root settlement and early growth alter the transplanting. 2 : The carbon contents of the plants of $T_1$, and $T_2$ at late seedling stage increased than T0, and the carbon contents. of $T_1$ and $T_2$ plots became higher in amount in proportion to the nitrogen absorption as compared with those of $T_0$. 3 : C/N ratio appeared significant among soil application plots($N_1, \;N_2$) and foliar application of urea plots ($T_1$, $T_2$ and $T_0$). C/N ratio was lower in case of increased amount of nitrogen. The higher contents of nitrogen and carbon and lower C/N ratio resulted in the increment of root numbers and root lengths. Exp.II: Effect of leaf prunning and foliar application of urea at late heading stage on the maturation and yield of rice. 1 : There was a highly significant decrease in the maturing rate by severe leaf prunning. In the mean time, significant increase in maturing rate was observed with urea foliar application and it was found the more frequent application the more effective for higher maturing rate with a moderate significance. A correlationship between the level of prunning and maturing rate was enumerated to 0.961 of correlation coefficient, which indicated an increased maturing rate by the increased number of remaining leaves. 2 : The 1.000 grain weight, grain weight and hulled rice yield increased by leaf prunning in order (plot a$A_1$, $A_3$, $A_2$ and $A_0$ were 89.8%, 89.4%, 87.8% and 87.5% respectively, showing the highest of rate in $A_1$ and $A_3$ in methods of ear fertilization and being highly significant between its treatment. 3 : 1000 grain weights were highly significant between time of application, showing a tendency of increase of weights with the time lagging until days before earings as that of maturing rates. High significance was recognized between methods of ear fertilization, showing the highest in $A_2$ 23.18 gr. 4 : Yields per $3.3m^2$ were not significant between time of ear fertilization, whereas were highly significant between methods of ear fertilization. Those of $A_1$, $A_3$, $A_2$ and $A_0$ were 1.486 kg, 1.491 kg, 1.381 kg and 1.328 kg, respectively, showing the highest in $A_1$ and $A_3$. 5 : Hulling ratios showed significant different between time of ear fertilization, showing the highest in $T_2$, whereas those of methods of ear fertilization were highly significant between its treatment, Those of $A_1$, $A_3$, $A_2$ and $A_0$ were 84.72%, 84.06%, 83.29%, and 82.56% respectively, showing the highest m $A_2$ and $A_3$ among others. 6 : Yields of hulled rice per $3.3m^2$ showed significant different between time of ear fertilization, showing the highest in $T_1$ 1.192 kg. Whereas, those were highly significant between methods of ear fertilization. Those of $A_1$, $A_3$, $A_2$ and $A_0$ were 1.259 kg, 1.254 kg, 1.149 kg and 1.095 kg, respectively, showing the highest in $A_1$ and $A_2$. 7 : Contents of nitrogen on rice plant increased in case of nitrogen application as ear fertilizer and showed that the case of urea foliar application was more effective than that of soil application, showing the increased nitrogen content of rice plant was accompanied by carbon content.

  • The influence of fertilizer on the growth characteristics in Korean lawn grass was studied from June through October in a experiment. The results were as follows: 1. Maximum dry matter weight of Korean lawn grass was achieved in early in early August when it was $64.3g/m^2$ without fertilizer and $157.9g/m^2$ with fertilizer. On the other hand, the dry matter weight of whole plant including Korean lawn grass reached the maximum in late September, which was late, to some extent, compared with that if pure Korean lawn grass, presumably associated with seed maturing period of $C_4$ type plants. 2. Notable positive effect on leaf blade and non-leaf part weight in Korean lawn grass was also detected. However, the rate of dry matter occupied by non-leaf part was markedly increased by fertilizer application. 3. The dry matter portion occupied by Korean lawn grass the in total dry matter weight of whole plant was significantly decreased as time went by, particularly in case of fertilizer application. 4. Fertilizer, which might imply an increased potential of tiller numbers according to fertilizer. 5. In general, the seasonal change pattern of the rhizome of Korean lawn grass coincided with that of the aboveground organs: Its maximum dry matter weight achieved from late August to early September was $194.2g/m^2$ with nil fertilizer, and, with fertilizer, $259.7g/m^2$, of which figures were equivalent to be increased to 33.7%, compared to that with nil fertilizer. Applying fertilizer increased the weight of root: The highest values were $36.7g/m^2$ with nil fertilizer and $80.9g/m^2$ with fertilizer.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of night illumination on the growth and yield of wheat and barley. Three varieties of barley and four cultivars of wheat were tested under the different night illuminance which was controlled in the range of 1.2∼20 Lux during whole growth season at night. As night illumination was stronger, the culm length of all varieties tended to be shorter. The shortening was greater in barley than wheat. Node number, awn length and culm diameter tended to decrease as the light intensity was stronger. Internode length above the 4th and 5th node was remarkably decreased by the stronger illuminance. The degree of decrease in spike length affected by the night illuminance was much larger in the late-maturing variety among wheat cultivars. As night illumination was stronger, days to heading was shortened in general. The range of decrease was 2 to 10 days under 10∼20 Lux condition similarly in both barley and wheat. Effect of night illumination on heading date and days from initial heading to full heading was not considerably different between the crops and among varieties except Kangbori. Night illumination decreased the grain yield by 12.5% in barley, and 11.0% in wheat at 2.1∼5.0 Lux condition, and 34.6% in barley, and 29.3 % in wheat at 10∼20 Lux condition compared to control. Yield reduction was significantly different among varieties, being greatest in Kangbori among barley varieties, and in Chokwang (late-maturring variety) and Changkwang (late-maturring variety) among wheat varieties. It was interpreted that the decrease of grain yield was resulted from the decrease in the number of spikes and the number of grains per spike under the stronger night illumination. The decrease of grain yield was more directly attributed to the decrease in the number of grains per spike.
