This experiment was canied out to determine the effect of cultivar, harvest date and drying method on the changes of moisture content and quality of spring harvest oat(Avena sativa L.) hay. Disign of the experiment was a spilt-split-plot arrangement with early and late cultivars as main plots, early and late harvest dates as sub-plots, and drying agent and tedding as sub-subplots in three replications. Moisture content of early harvest oat was higher than that of late harvest oat by 127.1% dry weight(DW) in 'Swan' and 39.8%DW in 'Foothill'. Moisture content difference between 'Foothill' and 'Swan' was 117.6%DW at early and 204.9%DW at late harvest dates, respectively. Cultivar effect on moisture content of cut oat was higher at late harvest date, but drying method effect was higher at early harvest. Total nitrogen content of early harvest was higher than that of late harvest by 0.70% and that of 'Foothill' was higher than that of 'Swon' by 0.86%. But no difference in total nitrogen content was found between the drying method. ADF and NDF contents were increased at late harvest by 29% and 1 I%, respectively(P<0.05). ADF and NDF contents of 'Swan' were higher than those of 'Foothill' by 2.8% and 4.5%, respectively. No difference in ADF and NDF contents was obtained by drying methods. RFV of early harvest oat hay was 95.1 and 103.8 for 'Swan' and 'Foothill' but late harvest 'Swan' and 'Foothill' showed 74.8 and 85.0, respectively.
Normal- and late-harvested Fuji apples were fermented using the rapid-fermenting yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae SS89. The late-harvest apples showed a slightly higher soluble-solid content with a lower level of total-acid and moisture (p<0.05) contents as well as hardness (p<0.05) than the normal-harvest apples. During the fermentation, the apples had similar changes in the pH and total-acid content regardless of the harvest time, but the increases in the alcohol content and yeast viable count with the decrease of the soluble-solid content were more rapid in the late-harvest apples than in the normal-harvest apples. After the completion of the fermentation, the soluble-solid and alcohol contents became very similar. The late-harvest cider showed a high total phenolic-compound content and a high DPPH radical scavenging effect, although these were slightly lower than those of the normal-harvest cider. It also showed a higher malic-acid content and higher hue color (p<0.05), Hunter's L, and b (p<0.05) values than the normal-harvest cider. In the sensory evaluation, the late-harvest cider obtained a higher score in taste and a lower score in color compared to the normal-harvest cider.

Late-maturing Dark Horse, and early-maturing High Speed oat varieties were seeded on March 3, 2016 and harvested on three periods: May 31, June 10, and June 20 coded as early, mid, and late-harvest, respectively. Dried and ground samples were subjected to chemical analysis to determine nutritional values such as crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), ether extract (EE), organic matter (OM), and total digestible nutrient (TDN). Effective degradability (ED) of nutrients and fermentation characteristics including volatile fatty acid (VFA) composition, pH, gas production, and ammonia-N concentration were evaluated through an in vitro digestion method. Varieties of oat hays showed significant difference in terms of nutritional value, ED, and fermentation characteristics. Dark Horse showed higher CP and OM, and lower EE contents than High Speed. Dark Horse also showed higher EDDM (dry matter), NDF, ADF, and OM than High Speed, and although High Speed showed higher pH and ammonia-N, it had lower gas and total VFA production than Dark Horse. However, in terms of harvest period, significant difference was only observed in Dark Horse where early-harvest increased the CP, and late-harvest increased the NDF and OM contents. In addition, early-harvest of Dark Horse increased the EDDM and EDNDF of the forage. Therefore, early-harvest of late-maturing Dark Horse would give better nutrient efficiency than High Speed. Allowing Dark Horse to advance in maturity would decrease its nutrient productivity and efficiency.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the changes of harvest index and the relationship between harvest index and yield determination factors by different planting times in the determinate soybean cultivars, Shinpaldal and Danbaeg. Optimum planting were 23 May in 1995 and 1996. Late planting were 13 June in 1995 and 6 June in 1996. Growth period from planting to physiological maturity (R7) was shortened as planting time was delayed in two cultivars due to shortening of reproductive growth period in Shinpaldal, and of vegetative growth period in Danbaeg. Stem weight was distinctly decreased in late planting compared to optimum planting, but seed weight of both cultivars was not different between planting times. Also, seed number per pod and harvest index were significantly increased in late planting and the high correlation was found between two factors. It was suggested that increase of harvest index in late planting would be related with high assimilate use efficiency due to increase of sink capacity. The results of correlation and principal component analysis for yield determination factors showed that main factor on yield determination was pod number per plant at R5 stage associated with dry matter accumulation during early reproductive growth period, seed number per pod and harvest index were the second factor, and one hundred seed weight was the third factor. The result of this experiment indicated that yield determination in soy-bean was dependent mainly on pod number per plant related to dry matter accumulation by early reproductive growth period, and the increase of seed number per pod and harvest index could compensate for yield decrease by shortening of vegetative growth period in late planting. Such result suggests that optimum planting date can be delayed from mid May to early June in improved soybean cultivars in Korea.
Effect of storage on the tree and quality of early cultivar of Citrus unshiu Marc. produced in Cheju according to harvest time were investigated. Soluble solids, acid content, flesh ratio, firmness and specific cavity of the fruits harvested at 27th of November were 12.0, 1.03%, 79.98%, 0.774kg-force, 0.912, respectively. Soluble solids, total sugar and reducing sugar were increased gradually, but acid content was decreased slightly as delayed in harvest time. Otherwise specific gravity and firmness were not shown in great during harvest time, color index(a/b) was increased sharply till late November and then remained in stationary phase. On these result, we recommend that the harvest time of early cultivar of Citrus unshiu Marc. would be during December because of wilting partly. Fully ripened-fruits harvested late, compared to ordinary harvest time, with cold storage would be kept more quality and freshness of fruits for fresh consumption than the fruits harvested early and stored at room temperature.
Planting date of soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is one of production components in cultural systems. The objective of the current study was to identify the components of soybean production and cultural practices encompassing planting dates and cultivars that respond to dry matter accumulation, harvest index and yield components. Three determinate soybean cultivars were planted on May 13 (early), June 3 (mid), and June 24 (late). Planting density was 60$\times$15cm with 2 seeds (222,000 plants per ha). Soybean plants were sampled every 10 days interval from the growth stages of V5 to R8 and separated into leaves including petioles, stems, pods, and seeds. Dry matter accumulations, harvest indices, and yield components were measured. Early planting had taken 55 days from VE to R2 and late planting taken 39 days indicating reduced vegetative growth. Early planting showed higher leaf, stem, pod and seed dry weights than late planting. However, late planting appeared to be higher harvest index and harvesting rate. Vegetative mass including leaf and stem increased to a maximum around R4/R5 and total dry weight increased to a maximum around R5/R6 and then declined slightly at R8. The highest seed yield was obtained with mid planting and no difference was found between early and late plantings. Cultivar differences were found among planting dates on growth characteristics and yield components. The results of this experiment indicated that soybean yield in relation to planting dates examined was mainly associated with harvest index and harvesting rate, and planting date of cultivars would be considered soybean plants to reach the growth stage of R4/R5 after mid August for adequate seed yield.
Silage corn (Zea mays L) is grown extensively in livestock operations, and many managements focus on forage yield. This experiment was conducted at Seoul National University (SNU) Experimental Livestock Farm, Suwon in 1998. We determined the effect of planting date and harvest stage on forage yield and quality responses of corn hybrids (five relative maturity groups). The five maturity groups (100 d, 106 d, 111 d, 119 d and 125 d) were planted on 15 April and 15 May, and harvested at maturity stages (1/3, 1/2 and 2/3 kernel milkline). Whole plant dry matter (DM) and ear percentages had significant differences among corn hybrids. Ear percentages of early maturing corns (100 d and 106 d) were higher than for other hybrids. Ear percentage at the early planting date was higher than that at the late planting date for all corn hybrids. The DM and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yields of the 106 d and 111 d corn hybrids were higher than other hybrids, and the DM and TDN yields at the early planting date were higher than that at the late planting date. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) percentages were greater for the late maturity corn hybrids. For plants of the early planting date, the ADF and NDF percentages were lower than for those of late planting date for hybrids. From the comparison among harvest stages, ADF and NDF percentages were decreased as harvest stage progressed. The TDN, net energy for lactation (NEL), and cellulase digestible organic matter of dry matter (CDOMD) were decreased as maturity of corn hybrid delayed. The TDN, NEL, and CDOMD values at the early planting date were higher than those at the late planting date among for corn hybrids. From the comparison among harvest dates, TDN, NEL, and CDOMD values were increased as harvest stage progressed. The correlation coefficient for DM percentage of grain at harvest with DM and TDN yields were 0.68*** and 0.76***, respectively. And the correlation coefficient for ear percentage with ADF, NDF, and CDOMD were -0.81***, -0.82*** and 0.73***, respectively. Our study showed differences of silage corn in forage production and quality resulting from hybrid maturity, planting date, and harvest stage. We believe that for the best silage corn, selection of the hybrid and best management practices are very important.
The yield and quality characteristics of three rice varieties(Seojinbyeo, Ilpumbyeo, and Chuchungbyeo) in reclaimed saline paddy field were investigated under different cultural practices, three transplanting times (May 15, May 30 and June 15) and four harvest times (40, 50, 60 and 70days after heading) in order to obtain basic information for the production of high quality rice. Brown rice yield of three rice varieties were significantly higher in early and medium than late season cultivation. The protein content of milled rice showed high interaction effect between transplanting time and harvest time. Palatability values of Seojinbyeo and Ilpumbyeo were significantly higher in late than medium season cultivation, but Chucheongbyeo did not show any difference in its palatability value by different transplanting time. The palatability values of three rice variety was the highest in the harvest at 40 days after heading. The grain yield of three rice varieties were higher in early and medium than late season cultivation, whereas palatability values of three rice varieties were significantly higher in the early and late season cultivation than medium season cultivation. The palatability value measured by rice taster showed a highly negative correlation(r=$0.43^{**}$) with cumulative air temperature during ripening period.
Many studies have showen that Letinus edodes have a reducing effects on blood pressure and lipid levels in animals with high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia. But the only cap has been on the market as goods and the stipe has been wasted. The price is very variable and is based on harvest time and the part of the plant currenty, there is not much information about the nutritional composition and bio-fuctional effects of Letinus edodes based on harvest time and part. Some farmers have been selling the powder seasoning by drying and pulverizing Letinus edodes including stipe to develop value added, late harvested Letinus edodes and its stipe these days. This study was conducted to investigate and compare the nutritional composition of Letinus edodes harvested at different times (early: E, late: L) and separated by part (cap: C, stipe: S). The 4 kinds of materials were named as early harvested cap (EC) and stipe (ES), and late harvested cap (LC) and stipe (LS) samples were obtained from Mungyeong City Agricultural Technology & Extension Center. The composition analysis of the nutrients in the 4 materials was conducted by using the AOAC method. The proximate components (moisture, protein, fat, fiber, ash, and carbohydrates), minerals and vitamin content were measured. Nutritional composition of Lentinus edodes did not show any significant difference between early and late harvested mushrooms. Nutritional compositions were different according to part. The results demonstrate that the late harvested stipe can also be used as a quality food material.

This study was carried out to analyze winter cereal crops for harvest time, proper drying time and haylage quality in order to investigate the possibility of the production of good quality haylage substitute for hay. As a result, in case of productivity and feed value, dry matter yield and TDN yield was increased with late harvest and crude protein and NDF, ADF was decreased (p<0.05). To make haylage for whole crop barley, oats, triticale, whole crop wheat need more than 32 hour wilting time in the milk ripe stage, yellow ripe stage need about 8~24 hour, and wilting time did not need the full ripe stage. Rye does not suitable for making haylage because of difficulty pre-wilting time. In case of fermentative quality on haylage, pH was increased with late harvest on all winter cereal crop forage. Lactic acid content was decreased with late harvest (p<0.05), and highest in the milk ripe stage. Acetic acid was also decreased with late harvest, and butyric acid was not detected. In conclusion, to harvest sooner of winter cereal crops could be an efficient way when making haylage in terms of protein content and fermentation quality. Ray can used as fresh and silage, because difficulty for pre-wilting time in Korea. Whole crop barley, oats, triticale, wheat can be used haylage when harvested yellow ripen stage and pre-wilting time for 8~24 hours.
