The scanning laser source (SLS) technique is a promising new laser ultrasonic tool for the detection of small surface-breaking defects. The SLS approach is based on monitoring the changes in laser-generated ultrasound as a laser source is scanned over a defect. Changes in amplitude and frequency content are observed for ultrasound generated by the laser over uniform and defective areas. The SLS technique uses a point or a short line-focused high-power laser beam which is swept across the test specimen surface and passes over surface-breaking or subsurface flaws. The ultrasonic signal that arrives at the Rayleigh wave speed is monitored as the SLS is scanned. It is found that the amplitude and frequency of the measured ultrasonic signal have specific variations when the laser source approaches, passes over and moves behind the defect. In this paper, the setup for SLS experiments with full B-scan capability is described and SLS signatures from small surface-breaking and subsurface flaws are discussed using a point or short line focused laser source.
The LDS(Laser Direct Structuring) process uses thermoplastic polymers with a additive compound that serves as plating seed after the activation by laser. It can realize industry requirement such as miniaturization of electrical component, design flexibility and reduction of production steps. The purpose of this study is to introduce LDS, and to investigate the fundamental mechanism. Also the characteristics of conductive patterns were investigated with respect to laser fluence and intensity. We have used a pulsed fiber laser (wavelength : 1064nm) and copper electroless plating to fabricate conductive patterns. The result showed that laser induced metal-organic complex was caused metalization by electroless copper plating, the critical laser fluence was $1.41\;J/cm^2$ at a scan speed of 1 m/s.

Selective laser sintering(SLS), a kind of rapid prototyping technology, can provide a process to form many types of coatings. Coated layers by selective laser melting are highly influenced by substrate, powder and laser parameters such as laser power, scan rate, fill spacing and layer thickness. Therefore an attempt to fabricate Fe-Ni-Cr coating on AISI H13 tool steel has been performed by selective laser sintering. In this study, Fe-Ni-Cr coating was produced by experimental facilities consisting of a 200W fiber laser which can be focused to 0.08mm and atmospheric chamber which can control atmospheric pressure with Ar. With power increase or energy density decrease, line width was decreased and line surface quality was improved with energy density increase. Surface quality of coating layer was improved with fill spacing optimization or layer thickness decrease.
Removing radioactive contaminated metal materials is a vital task during the decommissioning of nuclear power plants to reduce the cost of the post-dismantling process. The laser decontamination technique has been recognized as a key tool for a successful dismantling process as it enables a remote operation in radioactive facilities. It also minimizes exposure of workers to hazardous materials and reduces secondary waste, increasing the environmental friendless of the post-dismantling processing. In this work, we present a thorough and efficient laser decontamination approach using a single-mode continuous-wave (CW) laser. We subjected stainless steels to a surface-removal process that repetitively exposes the laser to a confined region of ~75 ㎛ at a high scanning rate of 10 m/s. We evaluate the decontamination performance by measuring the removal depth with a 3D scanning microscope and further investigate optimal removal conditions given practical parameters such as the laser power and scan properties. We successfully removed the metal surface to a depth of more than 40 ㎛ with laser power of 300 W and ten scans, showing the potential to achieve an extremely high DF more than 1000 by simply increasing the number of scans and the laser power for the decontamination of primary circuits.

MLS (Mobile Laser Scanning) which is a scanning method done by moving the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is widely employed to capture indoor PCD (Point Cloud Data) for floor plan generation in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry. The movement and rotation of LiDAR in the scanning phase cause deformation (i.e. skew) of PCD and impose a significant impact on quality of output. Thus, a de-skewing method is required to increase the accuracy of geometric representation. De-skewing methods which use position and pose information of LiDAR collected by IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) have been mainly developed to refine the PCD. However, the existing methods have limitations on de-skewing PCD without IMU. In this study, a novel algorithm for de-skewing 2D PCD captured from MLS without IMU is presented. The algorithm de-skews PCD using scan matching between points captured from adjacent scan positions. Based on the comparison of the deskewed floor plan with the benchmark derived from TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning), the performance of proposed algorithm is verified by reducing the average mismatched area 49.82%. The result of this study shows that the accurate floor plan is generated by the de-skewing algorithm without IMU.
A methodology is developed and many used to evaluate the response sensitivity of the thermal systems to variations in their design parameters. Technique for computing the sensitivity of temperature distributions to changes in processing parameters needed for deciding the more effective laser input parameters for laser surface hardening treatment are considered. In this study, a state equation governing the heat flow in laser surface treatment is analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method and sensitivity data of the processing parameter obtained using a direct differentiation method applied for sensitivity analysis. The interesting processing parameter is taken as the laser scan velocity and characteristic beam radius( $r_{b}$) of the sensitivity of the temperature T versus v and $r_{b}$ is analyzed. And these sensitivity results obtained in another parameters are fixed condition. To verifying the numerical analysis results, hardened layer dimensions (width and depth) of the numerical analysis compared with the results of an experimental data.ata.
In the present work, graphene powder was synthesized by laser scribing method. The resultant flexible light-scribed graphene is very appropriate for use in micro-supercapacitors. The effect of the laser scribing process in reducing graphene oxide (GO) was investigated. GO was synthesized using a chemical mixture of GO solution; then, it was coated onto a LightScribe DVD disk and laser scribed to reduce GO and create laser-scribed graphene (LSG). The CV curves of pristine rGO at various scan rates showed that the ultimate product possesses the ability to store energy at the supercapacitor level. Charge-discharge curves of pristine rGO at two different current densities indicated that the specific capacitance ($C_m$) increases due to the reduction of the discharge current density. Finally, the long-term charge-discharge stability of the LSG was plotted and indicates that the specific capacitance decreases very slightly from its primary capacitance of ${\sim}10F\;cm^{-3}$ and that the cyclic stability is favorable over 1000 cycles.
Distribution of the local critical temperature and current density in YBCO coated conductors were analyzed using Low-temperature Scanning Laser and Hall Probe Microscopy (LTSLHPM). We prepared YBCO coated conductors of various bridge types to study the spatial distribution of the critical temperature and the current density in single and multi bridges. LTSLHPM system was modified for detailed linescan or two-dimensional scan both scanning laser and scanning Hall probe method simultaneously. We analyzed the local critical temperature of single and multi bridges from series of several linescans of scanning laser microscopy. We also investigated local current density and hysteresis curve of single bridge from experimental results of scanning Hall probe microscopy.

This paper describes the experimental results on direct selective laser sintering of WC-Co mixture for rapid tooling. The experiments were carried out within an air, argon and nitrogen atmosphere. Coupons of single layer were sintered at various laser powers, scanning speeds and scan spacings. As the energy density (energy per unit scanned area) is increased, the thickness of coupons is increased. The main problem took place during sintering within an air atmosphere was severe oxidation of WC-Co mixture. As the laser power is increased and/or scanning speed is decreased, more severe oxidation occurred. Within an argon and nitrogen atmosphere the oxidation is reduced significantly. Experiments on multi-layer sintering were also carried out.

We investigated the surface roughness and surface morphology changes for the laser irradiated alumina plates by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. For the laser irradiation on the alumina plates with ${\lambda}$ = 1064 nm, the surface roughness decreases with the increasing energy density. The surface morphology shows that the edges of alumina grains become dull with the increasing energy density. For ${\lambda}$ = 532 nm, increasing scan time at the same energy density causes a rough surface. We discuss the physical reason of the surface roughness and surface morphology changes.
