Performance Analysis of the Optoelectronic Oscillator using the Direct Modulation Laser (레이저 직접 변조를 이용한 광전 발진기의 성능 분석)

  • The performance analysis of optoelectronic oscillator(OEO) based on a directly modulated semiconductor laser was theoretically achieved. First, the analysis was performed on the open response of the key components that constitute the OEO loop. Using the results, we simulated the open-loop characteristics of the OEO loop. By combining oscillation conditions of loop oscillator in addition to the open-loop magnitude and phase responses, theoretical performance analysis such as OEO's oscillation frequency, spurious tones and phase noise was successfully completed.

  • Pulse delays among operating lines are observed in a multiline operation transversely excited atmospheric pressure $CO_2$ laser which has an intracavity germanium etalon. To show the delay effect more precisely, we have replaced the etalon with a 40%/antireflecting coated ZnSe half mirror obtained two laser lines in which the delay can be controlled by a slight tilting of the output coupler, The results show that the individual rotational vibrational transition lines must have almost equal intensities in multiline oscillation in order to obtain high peak power and short pulses.

A Wide-range Tunable Wavelength-stabilization Technique for Semiconductor Lasers

  • This paper presents a wide-range tunable wavelength-locking technology based on optoelectronic oscillation (OEO) loops for optical fiber sensors and microwave photonics applications, explains the theoretical fundamentals of the design, and demonstrates a method for locking the relative wavelength differences between a leader semiconductor laser and its follower lasers. The input of the OEO loop in the proposed scheme (the relative wavelength difference) determines the radio-frequency (RF) signal frequency of the oscillation output, which is quantized into an injection current signal for feedback to control the wavelength drift of follower lasers so that they follow the wavelength change of the leader laser. The results from a 10-hour continuous experiment in a field environment show that the wavelength-locking accuracy reached ±0.38 GHz with an Allan deviation of 6.1 pm over 2 hours, and the wavelength jitter between the leader and follower lasers was suppressed within 0.01 nm, even though the test equipment was not isolated from vibrations and the temperature was not controlled. Moreover, the tunable range of wavelength locking was maintained from 10 to 17 nm for nonideal electrical devices with limited bandwidth.

Lasing mode and Beam Profile Analysis of DFB Laser with an Anti-reflection Coated Mirror (무반사 면을 갖는 DFB 레이저의 발진 모드와 빔 분포 해석)

  • In this paper, when a refractive index grating and a gain grating were simultaneously present in a DFB laser having a wavelength of 1.55 ㎛, a dielectric film coating was applied so that reflection did not occur on the right mirror surface, so that 𝜌r=0. In case of δL > 0, the threshold gain and the beam distribution in the longitudinal direction and the radiated power ratio Pl/Pr of the oscillation mode were compared for the cases of the phase of 𝜌l=π and π/2. If the phase of 𝜌l=π, in order to obtain a low threshold current and high frequency stability, κL should be greater than 8. In the case of the phase of 𝜌l= π/2, when κL is larger than 4.0, the oscillation gain starts to be lower than when the phase of 𝜌l=π. In order to lower the threshold current of a oscillation mode and enhance the frequency stability, κL should be greater than 8.

Effect of Grating Phase in DFB Lasers with an Anti-reflection Coated Mirror (AR 코팅된 DFB 레이저에서 격자 위상의 영향)

In case of 𝛿L>0, the characteristics of the oscillation frequency and oscillation gain were analyzed. When the grating phase of the left mirror surface continues to decrease from 𝜋, the graph lines of each mode gradually shift to the left. In case of 𝜅L=10, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode is the lowest. In this case, the mode selectivity is relatively low. From 𝜅L=0.5 to 𝜅L=6, the mode selectivity and the frequency stability are excellent. In the case of DFB lasers with an anti-reflection coated mirror, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode increases but the mode selectivity is about twice as excellent, compared with DFB lasers of having two cleaved facets.

Effect of Optical Delay on the Suppression of the Power Transient Excursion in a Combined Gain-Controlled Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier

  • This report describes the effect of optical delay on the suppression of the power transient excursion in a combined gain-controlled erbium-doped fiber amplifier with an internal optical feedback loop (OFL). A simple homogeneous model showed that the optical delay caused a phase change in the oscillation of the surviving and laser channels, which resulted in a reduction of the overall power transient excursion. In addition to the reduction, a real system with a 1528.7-nm OFL shifted the oscillation upward or downward according to channel removal or addition, whereas another one with a 1560.9-nm OFL did not. This different transient behavior reflected a control-wavelength dependence on optical automatic gain control, where spectral-hole burning dominated over relaxation oscillation for 1528.7 nm, and vice versa for 1560.9 nm.

  • Quasi-Phase-Matching(QPM)을 이용한 Optical Parametric Oscillation(OPO)은 높은 효율과 작은 Walk-off 효과를 보인다는 장점을 가지고 있다. 그러나 작은 펌프빛의 크기로 인한 빛세기의 증가는 optical damage와 photorefractive effect 야기하고, 이러한 요인으로 안정적인 고출력 연속발진에 있어서는 그 한계가 있으리라고 생각되어진다. 본 연구에서는 주기가 27.7 $mu extrm{m}$인 Periodically poled LiNbO$_3$(PPLN)을 비선형매질로 이용하여 10 kHz의 고반복률을 갖는 다이오드 펌프 Nd:YAG 레이저에서의 Quasi-Phase-Matched Optical Parametric Oscillation의 Signal파의 출력특성 및 안정화에 대하여 조사를 하였다. Sensitizing Effect of $Cr^{3+}$ in Nd : Laser Glass of Silicate System (Silicate계 Nd : Laser Glass에서 $Cr^{3+}$이온의 Sensitizer 효과)

  • Inproving laser efficiency, optimum content of Nd3+ which is active ion and effect of Cr3+ as a sensitizer are investigated in 60SiO2.30Li2O.10CaO host glass. The glasses are fabricated with the addition of Nd3+, Cr3+ and then optical properties such as absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum and fluorescence lifetime were studied. Finally, lasing efficiency was measured. From this study, optimum content of Nd2O3 appeared to be 3.5wt% and it was observed that the energy absorbed by optical exicitation of the Cr3+ is transfered to the Nd3+. Addition of Cr2O3 tend to improve characteristic of laser oscillation for the laser glass.

Experimental Investigation of a High-repetition-rate Pr3+:YLF Laser with Single-frequency Oscillation

  • We demonstrate a Pr3+:YLF 639.7-nm laser with single-frequency output based on the Q-switched pre-lase technology, pumped by a fiber-coupled GaN blue laser diode. The pre-lase technology is realized by the step-type loss of the acousto-optical Q-switched device. The conclusions of the theoretical research are verified experimentally. The mode-suppression ratio was 44 dB at the single-frequency laser output. Detection by interferometer verified the realization of the stable single-frequency laser. In addition, the emission spectrum had a linewidth of 139.9 MHz, measured by Fabry-Perot interferometer. The single-frequency laser's single-peak power was over 19.7 W with 98.8-ns pulse duration, obtained under an absorption power of 1.74 W.
