  • The experiment is conducted on the rapidly rotating incompressible flow within a confined cylinder using LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry). The configurations of interest are the flows between a rotating upper disk with a bar and a stationary lower disk enclosed within a cylinder. The flow is considered to be an axisymmetric undisturbed basic flow. The results show that the flow is strongly dependent on the radius and the shape of bar but is negligibly affected by the Reynolds number in turbulent flow. It is observed that in the lid-driven case the main forms near the wall as the Reynolds number increases. The thin bar causes the second axial flow due to the suction effect and the thick bar causes the main flow to be pulled toward the surface of the bar. The step bar shows the dual effect of the two. 1:2 tilt bar shows that the main flow distributes wider than the other cases in which interference occurs due step bar.

  • Photo lithography process is very important technology to fabricate highly integrated micro patterns with high precision for semiconductor and display industries. Up to now, mask type lithography process has been generally used for this purpose; however, it is not efficient for small quantity and/or frequently changing products. Therefore, in order to obtain higher productivity and lower manufacturing cost, the mask type lithography process should be replaced. In this study, a maskless lithography system using the DMD(Digital Micromirror Device) is developed, and the exposure condition and optical properties are analyzed and simulated for a single beam case. From the proposed experimental conditions, required exposure experiments were preformed, and the results were investigated. As a results, 10${\mu}m$ spots can be generated at optimal focal length.

  • The optical limiter is an optical component which reduces laser beam intensity for the protection of eyes and light sensors. Carbon nanotube is now known as a highly efficient optical limiting material. Optical limiting effect of the multi-walled carbon nanotube suspensions, in several kinds of solvents such as distilled water, chloroform, ethanol and ethylene glycol, were measured in the range from room temperature to near to the boiling points of the solvents. The pulsed Nd:YAG laser whose wavelength is 1064 nm and pulse duration is 6 ns was used as a light source. The experimental result shows that the limiting efficiency was reduced as the temperature increased, and the suspension which has lower boiling point, viscosity and surface tension has highest efficiency.

  • We report on the visible photoluminescence of the Tb/Yb co-doped alumino-germano-silicate fibers for visible fiber laser application. By changing the concentration ratios of $Tb^{3+}$ to $Yb^{3+}$, we optimized the solution doping conditions and obtained the highest emission efficiency at 546nm. The luminescence intensity at 546nm was found to increase with the relative increase of $Tb^{3+}$ ions.

  • $1.6\;{\mu}m$ emission originated from $Pr^{3+}:\;(^3F_3,\;^3F_4)\;{\longrightarrow}\;^3H_4$ transition in $Pr^{3+}-\;and\;Pr^{3+}/Er^{3+}$-doped selenide glasses was investigated under an optical pump of a conventional 1480 nm laser diode. The measured peak wavelength and fullwidth at half-maximum of the fluorescent emission are ~1650nm and 120nm, respectively. A moderate lifetime of the thermally coupled upper manifolds of ${\sim}212{\pm}10{\mu}s$ together with a high stimulated emission cross-section of ${\sim}(3{\pm}1){\times}10^{-20}\;cm^2$ promises to be useful for $1.6{\mu}m$ band fiber-optic amplifiers that can be pumped with an existing high-power 1480 nm laser diode. Codoping $Er^{3+}$ enhances the emission intensity by way of a nonradiative $Er^{3+}:\;^4I_{13/2}\;{\longrightarrow}\;Pr^{3+}:\;(^3F_3,\;^3F_4)$ energy transfer. The Dexter model based on the spectral overlap between donor emission and acceptor absorption describes well the energy transfer from $Er^{3+}$ to $Pr^{3+}$ in these glasses. Also discussed in this paper are major transmission loss mechanisms of a selenide glass optical fiber.

  • The remote real-time uranium concentration analysis using nitrogen laser, optode, photomultiplier and optical fiber is studied. The optode for the remote collection of uranium fluorescence is designed. The fluorescence intensity at time zero is calculated in order to exclude the quenching effect and the temperature fluctuation and used for more precise estimation. The fluorescence change is very sensitive to the uranium concentration change. The method shows the detection limit of 0.06ppm and the linearity between 0.1ppm and 2ppm of the aqueous uranium concentration.

  • Silicon(Si) nanowires have been grown by thermal chemical vapor deposition using the 20h ball-milled SiO powders under controlled conditions without the catalyst. For the synthesis of Si nanowires, $Al_2O_3$ substrates were used. Current-Voltage(I-V) and photoresponses were measured for the single Si nanowire in vacuum at room temperature. The light sources for these measurements were the 325 nm wavelength line from a He-Cd laser and the 633 nm wavelength line from a He-Ne laser. The intensity of the photoresponse is independent of the illumination time. And rise and decay times of the photoresponses are shorter than 1 sec.

  • Epoxy-based azopolymers were synthesized by the reaction of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) or N,N-diglycidyl aniline (DGA) with disperse orange 3 (DO3) to give poly(DGEBA-co-DO3) or poly(DGA-co-DO3), respectively. Aniline-based azopolymers prepared from poly(DGA-co-An) precursors, synthesized by the reaction of DGA with aniline, were produced by the post-azo coupling reaction with diazonium salts containing various substituents. Holographic gratings were carried out to measure the diffractive efficiencies (DE) for the interference patterns of the $Ar^+$ laser from 50 to $300\;mW/cm^2$ intensity. The shorter repeating unit with higher chromophore density induced deeper surface relief gratings (SRG). Large surface gratings were observed for the aniline-based azopolymers with -COOH substituents, as compared with those for epoxy-based azopolymers. The aniline-based azopolymers with dimerized chromophores and various substituents were also synthesized to observe the effect of chromophore substituents and dimerization on the holography. The dimerized chromophores were more sensitively photoisomerized by the $Ar^+$ laser beam, and demonstrated a larger grating than that with one azo bond.

  • A simple and new uranium analysis technique for raffinate solution of nuclear fuel conversion process was developed using a time-resolved laser-induced fluorimetry. The addition of 4 M-phosphoric acid more than 10 times in volume to the raffinate sample was found to be efficient for obtaining stable uranium fluorescence signal which was not influenced by many fluorescence quenchers. A calibration curve of a good linearity for the fluorescence intensity vs. the uranium concentration was obtained at the range of 3.0$\times$10$^{-6}$-6.0$\times$10$^{-5}$ M U $O_2$$^{2+}$ in the raffinate samples.

  • In order to analyze the concentration of cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC), a widely used cationic surfactant, we developed a simple and compact spectrometer, which consisted of a diode laser and a photodiode detector. Preliminary results are described here on the performances of the system in terms if the stability of output intensity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Data on the comparisons of the system with the conventional UV-VIS spectrometer are also given. With the instrument, the concentration of CPC between 3${\times}$10$\^$-5/M and 1.1${\times}$ 10$\^$-4/M are calibrated as a correlation coefficient of 0.9635. The results shown here indicate a potential for developing a portable spectrometer useful for analyzing concentrations of CPC.
