Simulation and Experimental Study of A TLP Type Floating Wind Turbine with Spoke Platform

  • As the demand for renewable energy has increased following the worldwide agreement to act against global climate change and disaster, large-scale floating offshore wind systems have become a more viable solution. However, the cost of the whole system is still too high for practical realization. To make the cost of a floating wind system be more economical, a new concept of tension leg platform (TLP) type ocean floating wind system has been developed. To verify the performance of a 5-MW TLP type ocean floating wind power system designed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the FAST simulation developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is used. Further, 1/50 scale model tests have been carried out in the ocean engineering tank of the Research Institute of Medium and Small Shipbuilding, Korea. This paper compares the simulation and ocean engineering tank test results on motion prediction and tension assessment of the TLP anchor.

High Temperature Mechanical Properties of Continuous Cast and Extruded ZK60A Alloy (연속주조 압출 ZK60A 합금의 고온 기계적 특성)

  • Continuous casting is a process where molten metal is solidified into a semi-finished billet on a large scale with either a rectangular or round cross section for subsequent processing. The use of continuous casting provides an opportunity for producing material on a practical industrial scale with lower cost than conventional casting. In the current study, the material was fabricated by continuous casting and subsequent extrusion. Tensile tests were conducted on continuous cast ZK60A after extrusion over a range of strain rates at temperatures from 473K to 623K. The alloy exhibits a quasi-superplastic behavior with a maximum recorded elongation of ~250% at 523K when tested with an initial strain rate of $10^{-5}/s$. The experiments give a strain rate sensitivity exponent of 0.3~0.4 and an activation energy of 108 kJ/mol. From the current investigation, it was found that the high-temperature plastic flow of the ZK60A is controlled by a dislocation viscous glide mechanism.

  • The thermal property is one of the most important characteristics in the field of energetic materials. Because energy materials release decomposition heat, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is frequently used for thermal analysis. However, thermodynamic events, such as melting can interfere with DSC kinetic analysis. In this study, we use isothermal mode for DSC measurement to avoid thermodynamic issues. We also merge accelerating rate calorimetry(ARC) data with DSC data to obtain a robust prediction results for small scale samples and for large scale samples as well. For the thermal property prediction, advanced kinetics and technology solutions(AKTS) programs are used.

Analyzing the Influential Relationship between PMO and Project Performance in Construction Industry: Focusing on Moderation Effect of PM Leadership (건설산업에서 프로젝트관리오피스(PMO)와 프로젝트성과의 영향관계 분석: PM리더십 조절효과 중심으로)

  • Recently, the importance of project management has increased due to the scale and complexity of the construction projects. Therefore, this study conducted a survey on construction companies and related public institutions to verify the relationship between the role of the Project Management Office(PMO) and PM leadership for project performance. Based on this, the effect of the PMO role on the project performance was identified and the moderating effect of PM leadership was analyzed. As a result, first, the role of the PMO was found to have an influential on the project performance. Second, the PM leadership was verified to has a moderating effect in the relationship between the PMO role and the project performance. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influential of the role of PMO on project performance in the construction industry to suggest the necessity of PMO in the construction industry and the need to adopt PMO in large-scale construction projects and analyze the moderating effect of PM leadership on project performance.

Precedent based design foundations for parametric design: The case of navigation and wayfinding

  • Parametric design systems serve as powerful assistive tools in the design process by providing a flexible approach for the generation of a vast number of design alternatives. However, contemporary parametric design systems focus primarily on low-level engineering and structural forms, without an explicit means to also take into account high-level, cognitively motivated people-centred design goals. We present a precedent-based parametric design method that integrates people-centred design "precedents" rooted in empirical evidence directly within state of the art parametric design systems. As a use-case, we illustrate the general method in the context of an empirical study focusing on the multi-modal analysis of wayfinding behaviour in two large-scale healthcare environments. With this use-case, we demonstrate the manner in which: (1). a range of empirically established design precedents -e.g., pertaining to visibility and navigation- may be articulated as design constraints to be embedded directly within state of the art parametric design tools (e.g., Grasshopper); and (2). embedded design precedents lead to the (parametric) generation of a number of morphologies that satisfy people-centred design criteria (in this case, pertaining to wayfinding). Our research presents an exemplar for the integration of cognitively motivated design goals with parametric design-space exploration methods. We posit that this opens-up a range of technological challenges for the engineering and development of next-generation computer aided architecture design systems.

Experimental study of Hydraulic Cable Connection Systems with Re-tensioning and Wireless Monitoring (재긴장과 무선 모니터링이 가능한 유압식 케이블 접합부시스템의 실험에 대한 연구)

  • Due to the self-equilibrium status of the cable system, the loss of the tensioning in the cable system results in other cables carrying larger tension forces than those initially calculated by structural engineers. Also, turn-buckle systems, which have been widely used to pre-tension and/or re-tension the cables, are limited to use for small cables and to provide a rough estimation for tension forces. In this study, the re-tensioning cable connection systems were developed to overcome the problems mentioned above. The main objective of the proposed system is to re-tension large cables and measure the exact amount of tension forces of the cable systems. This connection system is also combined with the wireless signal monitoring module so that engineers are able to measure the tension forces any place where the internet is available. This paper presents the development of the re-tensioning cable connection systems and experiment using the real-scale cable systems to verify the fe-tensioning and signal monitoring systems.

Field Survey of structural and Environmental Characteristics of Pig Houses in the Southern Provinces in Korea (전업양축농가를 위한 남부지방 돈사의 구존 및 환경실태조사)

  • The structural and environmental characteristics of typical pig houses in different growth phases were surveyed and analyzed. Based on the data for thirty nine selected farms in four provinces, Jeonbuk-do, Jeonnam-do, Gyeongbuk-do, and Gyeongnam-do, in the southern provinces, Korea, the goal is to eventually establish standard pig houses of sow and litter, nursery pigs, and growing-finishing pigs. The survey included farm scale, production specialization, structural dimensions of the houses and their ventilation systems, cooling and heating systems, and floor and pit systems related to manure collection. The survey showed 90∼98% of growing-finishing pig houses adopted the sidewall curtain systems. The sidewall curtain systems, although popular, is not well insulated which leads to excessive heating costs in winter. Regarding flooring and manure collection system of the house, 23∼35% of growing-finishing houses installed scraper systems with concrete-slat floors in Gyeongsang provinces while 52∼78% did in Jeolla provinces. The cause of a large variance in flooring between tow regions could not be academically pinpointed, rather it could be attributed to the advice of neighbors who leads local pig production circle. A general trend toward enlargement and enclosure of pig houses for all growth phases was gaining popularity in most regions in recent years. A steady shift to multisite operation from continuous operation was also observed to prevent a disease transfer. The structural design of a standard pig house with its environmental control systems including ventilation and heating/cooling system was suggested for further validation study.   • The primary goal for developing high performance ATM switching systems is to minimized the probability of cell loss, cell delay and deterioration of throughput. ATM switching element that is the most suitable for this purpose is the shared buffer memory switch executed by common random access memory and control logic. Since it is difficult to manufacture VLIS(Very Large Scale Integrated circuit) as the number of input ports increased, the used of switching module method the realizes 32$\times$32, 150 Mb/s switch utilizing 8$\times$8, 600Mb/s os 16$\times$16, 150Mb/s unit switch is latest ATM switching technology for small and large scale. In this paper, buffer capacity satisfying total-memory-reduction effect by buffer sharing in a shared buffer memory switch are analytically evalu ated and simulated by computer with cell loss level at traffic conditions, and also features of switching network utilizing the switching module methods in small and large-capacity ATM switching system is analized. Based on this results, the structure in outline of 32$\times$32(4.9Gb/s throughput), 150Mb/s switches under research in many countries is proposed, and eventually, switching-network structure for ATM switching system of small and large and capacity satisfying with above primary goals is suggested.

Assessment of whipping and springing on a large container vessel

  • Wave induced vibrations increase the fatigue and extreme loading, but this is normally neglected in design. The industry view on this is changing. Wave induced vibrations are often divided into springing and whipping, and their relative contribution to fatigue and extreme loading varies depending on ship design. When it comes to displacement vessels, the contribution from whipping on fatigue and extreme loading is particularly high for certain container vessels. A large modern design container vessel with high bow flare angle and high service speed has been considered. The container vessel was equipped with a hull monitoring system from a recognized supplier of HMON systems. The vessel has been operating between Asia and Europe for a few years and valuable data has been collected. Also model tests have been carried out of this vessel to investigate fatigue and extreme loading, but model tests are often limited to head seas. For the full scale measurements, the correlation between stress data and wind data has been investigated. The wave and vibration damage are shown versus heading and Beaufort strength to indicate general trends. The wind data has also been compared to North Atlantic design environment. Even though it has been shown that the encountered wind data has been much less severe than in North Atlantic, the extreme loading defined by IACS URS11 is significantly exceeded when whipping is included. If whipping may contribute to collapse, then proper seamanship may be useful in order to limit the extreme loading. The vibration damage is also observed to be high from head to beam seas, and even present in stern seas, but fatigue damage in general is low on this East Asia to Europe trade.

Scoping for Environmental Impact and System Improvement of Marine Sand Mining in Korea (바다골재채취에 따른 환경영향 스코핑과 제도개선)

  • This paper assessed environmental impacts of marine sand mining on coastal areas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of Korea, and diagnosed problems of the related assessment statements for suggesting key assessment items (scoping) and system improvement. To mitigate conflicts and environmental impacts caused by large-scale, concentrated sand mining, we suggest it is critical to promote sustainable and eco-friendly utilization of marine resources while listening opinions from various stakeholders and analyzing alternative plans. Especially, it should be mandatory as a scoping item to provide verifiable data on the amount of sand, potential and accumulative impacts by mining, and key assessment items (e.g. erosion and sedimentation by submarine topography, benthic change, spreading of suspended solids, water pollution, grain-size change, and impact on fisheries resources). We also suggest that postassessment and monitoring should be improved to enable tracking of environmental impacts caused by sand mining through seasonal monitoring together with intermittent short-term surveys. In addition, effective measures to mitigate the impacts is also essential. As repeated sand mining at large-scale can damage marine ecosystems by long-term accumulated impacts, we suggest that assessment systems and regulatory policies should be developed and established, especially for ensuring reliability of assessment and review on selected major sandmining projects.
