In the process of structural design for large-scale structures with several thousands of degrees of freedom, a plethora of structural calculations with large amount of data storage are required to obtain the forces and displacements of the members. However, current computational environment with single microprocessor such as a personal computer or a workstation is not capable of generating a high-level of efficiency in structural analysis and design process for large-scale structures. In this paper, a high-performance parallel computing system interconnected by a network of personal computers is proposed for an efficient structural analysis. Two distributed structural analysis algorithms are developed in the form of distributed or parallel preconditioned conjugate gradient (DPCG) method. To enhance the performance of the developed distributed structural analysis algorithms, the number of communications and the size of data to be communicated are minimized. These algorithms are applied to the structural analyses of three large space structures as well as a 144-story tube-in-tube framed structure.
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a unique target to study the detail structures of molecular clouds and star-forming regions, due to its proximity and face-on orientation from us. Most part of the astrophysical subjects for the LMC have been investigated, but the magnetic field is still veiling despite its role in the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) and in the main force to influence the star formation process. Measuring polarization of the background stars behind interstellar medium allows us to describe the existence of magnetic fields through the polarization vector map. In this presentation, I introduce the near-infrared polarimetric results for the $39^{\prime}{\times}69^{\prime}$ field of the northeastern region of the LMC and the N159/N160 star-forming complex therein. The polarimetric observations were conducted at IRSF/SIRPOL 1.4 m telescope. These results allow us to examine both the global geometry of the large-scale magnetic field in the northeastern region and the close structure of the magnetic field in the complex. Prominent patterns of polarization vectors mainly follow dust emission features in the mid-infrared bands, which imply that the large-scale magnetic fields are highly involved in the structure of the dust cloud in the LMC. In addition, local magnetic field structures in the N159/N160 star-forming complex are investigated with the comparison between polarization vectors and molecular cloud emissions, suggesting that the magnetic fields are resulted from the sequential formation history of this complex. I propose that ionizing radiation from massive stellar clusters and the expanding bubble of the ionized gas and dust in this complex probably affect the nascent magnetic field structure.

A large eddy simulation(LES) is performed for turbulent flow around a bluff body inside a sudden expansion cylinder chamber, a configuration which resembles a premixed gas turbine combustor. To promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability, a flame holder is installed inside the combustion chamber. The Smagorinsky model is employed and the calculated Reynolds number is 5,000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of the inlet pipe. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing them with the laser-doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurement data. The agreement of LES with the experimental data is shown to be satisfactory. Emphasis is placed on the time-dependent evolutions of turbulent vortical structure behind the flame holder. The numerical flow visualizations depict the behavior of large-scale vortices. The turbulent mixing process behind the flame holder is analyzed by visualizing the sectional views of vortical structure.
Large-eddy simulations of the flow around a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number, based on cylinder diameter and free-stream velocity, $Re_D=2{\times}10^4$ are presented. Three different dynamic subgrid-scale models are used, viz. the dynamic eddy-viscosity model and two different mixed two-parameter models. The sensitivity to grid refinement in the spanwise and radial directions is systematically investigated. For the highest resolution considered, the effects of subgrid-scale modeling are also discussed in detail. In particular, it is shown that SGS modeling has a significant influence on the low-frequency modulations of the aerodynamics loads, which are related to significant changes in the near wake structure.
Observations of magnetic fields on scales up to several Mpc are important for understanding cluster and large-scale structure evolution. Our current census of such structures is heavily biased - towards fields of several $\mu$G, towards fields in deep potential wells, and towards high inferred field strengths m cooling flow and other clusters from improper analysis of rotation measure data. After reviewing these biases, I show some recent results on two relics that are powered in very different ways. I describe new investigations that are now uncovering weak diffuse fields in the outskirts of clusters and other low density environments, and the good prospects for further progress.
With more and more high-rise building being constructed in recent decades, bluff body flow with high Reynolds number and large scale dimensions has become an important topic in theoretical researches and engineering applications. In view of mechanics, the key problems in such flow are high Reynolds number turbulence and fluid-solid interaction. Aiming at such problems, a parallel fluid-structure interaction method based on socket parallel architecture was established and combined with the methods and models of large eddy simulation developed by authors recently. The new method is validated by the full two-way FSI simulations of 1:375 CAARC building model with Re = 70000 and a full scale Taipei101 high-rise building with Re = 1e8, The results obtained show that the proposed method and models is potential to perform high-Reynolds number LES and high-efficiency two-way coupling between detailed fluid dynamics computing and solid structure dynamics computing so that the detailed wind induced responses for high-rise buildings can be resolved practically.

This paper presents the earthquake response analysis results on the Large-Scale Seismic Test (LSST)structure which was built at Hualien in Taiwan. The seismic analysis is carried out using a computer code KIESSI, which has been developed based on the three-dimensional axisymmetric finite element method incorporating infinite elements for the far field soil region. The soil and structural properties obtained from the post-correlation study of the forced vibration tests (FVT) are utilized to predict seismic responses. The ground accelerations recorded at a site 56.5 m from the test structure are used as control motions. It has been found that the predicted responses are reasonably compared with the observed responses.
We study the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the CMASS Data Release 11 sample of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The CMASS sample yields a genus curve that is characteristic of one produced by Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. The data thus supports the standard model of inflation where random quantum fluctuations in the early universe produced Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. Modest deviations in the observed genus from random phase are as expected from the nonlinear evolution of structure. We construct mock SDSS CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3 (HR3) N-body simulations, where gravitationally bound dark matter subhalos are identified as the sites of galaxy formation. We study the genus topology of the HR3 mock surveys with the same geometry and sampling density as the observational sample, and the observed genus topology to be consistent with LCDM as simulated by the HR3 mock samples.
Previous OD matrix estimation methods from link traffic counts have focused on the formulation of mathematical model and its solution algorithm. Thereby those methods have assumed that true or real OD is similar to the target OD and paid little attention to the properties of the change of OD structure. Although it is general situation that each OD pair increases or decreases due to significant land use and to large time variation between target OD with real OD, those methods have set unrealistic assumptions that target OD increases or decreases uniformly and that the OD structure does not change. Therefore those methods have showed poor performance of OD estimation in general situation. To cope with the problem. this paper suggests a new concept of OD matrix structure and shows the shortcomings of previous method′s dependancy on target OD matrix. We divide "OD trips" into "OD scale" and "OD structure". Where OD scale is a quantitative magnitude of OD trips and "OD structure" is ordinal OD scale. This paper use the same solution algorithm developed by Baek et al. (2000) for analysing the OD structure. Results of numerical examples show that the performance of the method is better than that of previous methods, while the previous methods have better performance in estimation only when OD trips increase or decrease. In addition to, if OD structure does not change, the results show that the error of estimation is low relatively regardless of the large difference of trips between target OD and real OD. This paper also shows that the model performance on OD structure and on OD trips is low as the number of origins that OD structure is changed increase. From the results we suggest that the change of OD structure can be more important information than the difference between target OD and real OD in OD estimation steps.
The maximum likelihood detection with QR decomposition and M-algorithm (QRM-MLD) has been presented as a suboptimum multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection scheme which can provide almost the same performance as the optimum maximum likelihood (ML) MIMO detection scheme but with the reduced complexity. However, due to the lack of parallelism and the regularity in the decoding structure, the conventional QRM-MLD which uses the tree-structure still has very high complexity for the very large scale integration (VLSI) implementation. In this paper, we modify the tree-structure of conventional QRM-MLD into trellis-structure in order to obtain high operational parallelism and regularity and then apply the Viterbi algorithm to the QRM-MLD to ease the burden of the VLSI implementation. We show from our selected numerical examples that, by using the QRM-MLD with our proposed trellis-structure, we can reduce the complexity significantly compared to the tree-structure based QRM-MLD while the performance degradation of our proposed scheme is negligible.
