  • A numerical analysis for large amplitude motions of submerged circular cylinder is presented. The method is based on potential theory and two-dimensional motions in regular harmonic waves are tented as an initial value problem. The fully nonlinear free surface boundary condition is assumed in an inner domain and this solution is matched along an assumed an assumed common boundary to a linear solution in outer domain. Calculations of the large amplitude motion of a submerged circular cylinder are directly simulated in time domain. It is shown that relative motion between the body and fluid particle gives a significant effect on the lift and drift motions.

  • In order to improve the performance of relational databases, one has to reduce the number of disk accesses necessary to transfer data from disk to main memory. The paper proposes to reduce the number of disk I/O accesses by vertically partitioning relation into fragments and allowing attribute replication to fragments if necessary. When zero-one integer programming model is solved by the branch-and-bound method, it requires much computing time to solve a large sized problem. Therefore, heuristic solutions using genetic algorithm(GA) are presented. GA in this paper adapts a few ideas which are different from traditional genetic algorithms, for examples, a rank-based sharing fitness function, elitism and so on. In order to improve performance of GA, a set of optimal parameter levels is determined by the experiment and makes use of it. As relations are vertically partitioned allowing attribute replications and saved in disk, an attribute replicating vertical partition method by GA can attain less access cost than non-attribute-replication one and require less computing time than the branch-and-bound method in large-sized problems. Also, it can acquire a good solution similar to the optimum solution in small-sized problem.

  • The underground space of the Banwoldang in Daegu is the private enterprise historical development project that Daegu City & The forth construction company of the Samsung, Kolon, Daewoo, Hwasung promote, and take a role as the underground bridgehead that links east and west of the Daegu as the lunction of the 2 subway line. Accordingly, the underground space of the Banwoldang in Daegu have a import significance in that not only the alternative of the solution about the simple commercial formation or the limited ground but also compose the important axis of the city develoment. But, When I see the variety of problems, especially see the negative import in Daegu, the solution of the problems is the large underlying cause that revitalize the city. Consequently, in the study I would like to analyze the characteristics of the large underground space and the directivity of the interior design, to assistant for the develement plan of the more safe, comfort underground space.

  • In this paper the geometrically nonlinear continuum plate finite element model, hitherto not reported in the literature, is developed using the total Lagrange formulation. With the layerwise displacement field of Reddy, nonlinear Green-Lagrange small strain large displacements relations (in the von Karman sense) and linear elastic orthotropic material properties for each lamina, the 3D elasticity equations are reduced to 2D problem and the nonlinear equilibrium integral form is obtained. By performing the linearization on nonlinear integral form and then the discretization on linearized integral form, tangent stiffness matrix is obtained with less manipulation and in more consistent form, compared to the one obtained using laminated element approach. Symmetric tangent stiffness matrixes, together with internal force vector are then utilized in Newton Raphson's method for the numerical solution of nonlinear incremental finite element equilibrium equations. Despite of its complex layer dependent numerical nature, the present model has no shear locking problems, compared to ESL (Equivalent Single Layer) models, or aspect ratio problems, as the 3D finite element may have when analyzing thin plate behavior. The originally coded MATLAB computer program for the finite element solution is used to verify the accuracy of the numerical model, by calculating nonlinear response of plates with different mechanical properties, which are isotropic, orthotropic and anisotropic (cross ply and angle ply), different plate thickness, different boundary conditions and different load direction (unloading/loading). The obtained results are compared with available results from the literature and the linear solutions from the author's previous papers.

  • High-rise structures prone to large vibrations under the action of strong winds, resulting in fatigue damage of the structural components and the foundation. A novel compound damping cable system (CDCS) is proposed to suppress the excessive vibrations. CDCS uses tailored double cable system with increased tensile stiffness as the connecting device, and makes use of the relative motion between the high-rise structure and the ground to drive the damper to move back-and-forth, dissipating the vibration mechanical energy of the high-rise structure so as to decaying the excessive vibration. Firstly, a third-order differential equation for the free vibration of high-rise structure with CDCS is established, and its closed form solution is obtained by the root formulas of cubic equation (Shengjin's formulas). Secondly, the analytical solution is validated by a laboratory model experiment. Thirdly, parametric analysis is conducted to investigate how the parameters affect the vibration control performance. Finally, the dynamic responses of the high-rise structure with CDCS under harmonic and stochastic excitations are calculated and its vibration mitigation performance is further evaluated. The results show that the CDCS can provide a large equivalent additional damping ratio for the vibrating structures, thus suppressing the excessive vibration effectively. It is anticipated that the CDCS can be used as a good alternative energy dissipation system for vibration control of high-rise structures.

  • Single crystals of Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTP) were grown from the flux of $K_6P_4O_13(K_6)$ using a high temperatures solution growth method. To grow the large KTP crystal without inclusion, the temperature gradient in furnace, crystal rotation, orientation of seed crystal, and the cooling rate were controled. The KTP crystals are up to $10(a){\times}28(b){\times}33(c)mm^3$ in size. We investigated the optical inhomogeneity in this KTP crystal by the SHG power measurement and TEM analysis.

  • It has been known that the silk degumming treated by hot alkali solution is easy to handle but is liable to yield poor-quality silk due to the degree of degumming loss, incomplete-degumming or over-degumming. Therefore, many studies have been carried out on the silk degumming by enzyme in order to improve the quality of silk. However, no attention has been paid to the physicochemical analysis of enzymatic degummed silk. In this paper, two different degumming methods, soap and enzymatic, are compared in aqueous solution state of silk fibroin. The results can be summarized as follows: There was no significant difference between two solutions on the bases of polarizing microscopy, TEM observation and SDS-PAGE. Spherulite of silk fibroin was not observed in polarizing microscopy, however the leaf-shape fibril structure was developed upon solidification. The size of spherulites of silk fibroin in TEM observation were 30~120nm with a wide range of size distribution. The intrinsic viscosity of enzymatic degummed fibroin solution was lower than that of soap degummed solution. This can be explained that the silk fibroin was more degraded by enzymatic degumming method compared with the soap degumming method. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the fibroin molecule was composed of large component of molecule weight above 50 kd and small component of molecule weight about 20 kd. There was no difference in crystallinity between two degumming methods on the bases of results of DSC thermograms and IR spectra.

  • Finite element alternating method has been suggested and used effectively to obtain the fracture parameters in assessing the integrity of cracked structures. The method obtains the solution from alternating independently between the FEM solution for an uncracked body and the crack solution in an infinite body. In the paper, the finite element alternating method is extended in order to obtain the elastic-plastic stress fields of a three dimensional inner crack. The three dimensional crack solutions for an infinite body were obtained using symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. As an example of a three dimensional inner crack, a penny-shaped crack in a finite body was analyzed and the obtained elastc-plastic stress fields were compared with the solution obtained from the finite element analysis with fine mesh. It is noted that in the region ahead of the crack front the stress values from FEAM are close to the values from FEM. But large discrepancy between two values is observed near the crack surfaces.

  • Numerical solution lot frictional contact problems of nonlinearly deformable bodies having large deformation is presented. The contact conditions on the possible contact points are expressed by using the contact error vector, and the iterative scheme is used to reduce the contact error vector monotonically toward zero. At each iteration the solution consists of two steps : The first step is to revise the contact force by using the contact error vector given by the previous geometry, and the second step is to compute the displacement and the contact error vector by solving the equilibrium equation with the contact force given at the first step. Convergence of the iterative scheme to the correct solution is analyzed, and the numerical simulations we performed with a rigid-plastic membrane and a nonlinear elastic beam.

  • Cellular network is comprised of several base stations which serve cellular shaped service area and each base station (BS) is connected to the mobile switching center (MSC). In this paper, the configuration modeling and algorithm of a cellular mobile network with the aim of minimizing the overall cost of operation (handover) and network installation cost (cabling cost and installing cost of mobile switching center) are considered. Handover and cabling cost is one of the key considerations in designing cellular telecommunication networks. For real-world applications, this configuration study covers in an integrated framework for two major decisions: locating MSC and assigning BS to MSC. The problem is expressed in an integer programming model and a heuristic algorithm based on Lagrangian relaxation is proposed to resolve the problem. Searching for the optimum solution through exact algorithm to this problem appears to be unrealistic considering the large scale nature and NP-Completeness of the problem. The suggested algorithm computes both the bound for the objective value of the problem and the feasible solution for the problem. A Lagrangian heuristics is developed to find the feasible solution. Numerical tests are performed for the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed heuristic algorithm. Computational experiments show that the performance of the proposed heuristics is satisfactory in the quality of the generated solution.
