  • This paper presents the appropriateness for using high strength reinforcement according to the use of high strength concrete. Nine flexural tests were conducted on full-scale beam specimens according to the concrete strength, reinforcement strength and reinforcement ratio as main variable. The structural behavior was analyzed due to the flexural strength, stress-strain curve, deflections at yielding and fracture point, crack appearance and ductility factor. The member with high-strength reinforcements showed large deflection at yielding point and this was analyzed as a main cause to decrease the ductility factor. Structural behavior after yielding point, however, showed similarity to behavior of members with normal strength reinforcements of same stiffness. It was found that in the case of using reinforcements of $5500kgf/cm^2$ strength, the combination with concrete of $800kgf/cm^2$ strength demonstrated the great appropriateness which can increase the flexural capacity without any reduction of maximum reinforcement ratio.

  • Four types of experiments were performed to check the similitude of member behavior between prototype and 1 /10 scale models : (1) Test of slender columns with P-$\Delta$ effect, (2) Test of short columns with and without confinement steel, (3) Test of simple beams without stirrups, and (4) 'T-beam test. Based on the results of experiments, the conclusions were made as follows : (1) The P-$\Delta$ effect of slender columns can be almost exactly represented by 1/10 scale model. (2) The effect of confinement on short columns by the hoop steel can be also roughly simulated by 1/10 scale model. (3) The failure modes of simple beams without stirrups are brittle shear failures in prototype whereas those of 1/10 scale models are the ductile yielding of tension steel followed by large diagonal tension cracking and compressive concrete failure. (4) The behaviors of prototype and 1/10 scale model in T-beams appear very similar.

  • In this study, under large scale yielding conditions crack propagation is found to governed by parameters based on the J-integral or on the crack opening displacement. But initiation of crack propagation of ductile material seems to be controlled by just on parameter that is the strain. The relationship between the critical value of J-integral and the local fracture strain in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximum reduction in area. Therefore, the fundamental theorectical equation by the proposed elastic-plastic fracture toughness and the local fracture strain has a merit. in comparison with the ASTM method, which can measure by using the load-displacement curve and the specimens in tenslie test.

  • The anchor block is a specially designed concrete member intended to withstand pullout or thrust forces from backfill material of an internally stabilized anchored earth retaining wall by passive resistance of soil in front of the block. This study presents small-scale laboratory experimental works to investigate the pullout capacity of a concrete anchor block embedded in air dry sand and located at different distances from yielding boundary wall. The experimental setup consists of a large tank made of fiberglass sheets and steel framing system. A series of tests was carried out in the tank to investigate the load-displacement behavior of anchor block. Experimental results are then compared with the theoretical approaches suggested by different researchers and codes. The appropriate placement of an anchor block and the passive resistance coefficient, which is multiplied by the passive resistance in front of the anchor block to obtain the pullout capacity of the anchor, were also studied.

  • Ductility is important in the design of reinforced concrete structures. In seismic design of reinforced concrete members, it is necessary to allow for relatively large ductility so that the seismic energy is absorbed to avoid shear failure or significant degradation of strength even after yielding of reinforcing steels in the concrete member occurs. Therefore, prediction of the ductility should be as accurate as possible. The principal aim of this paper is to present the basic data for the ductility evaluation of reinforced high-strength concrete beams. Accordingly, 23 flexural tests were conducted on full-scale structural concrete beam specimens having concrete compressive strength of 40, 60, and 70MPa. The test results were then reviewed in terms of flexural capacity and ductility. The effect of concrete compressive strength, web reinforcement ratio, tension steel ratio, and shear span to beam depth ratio on ductility were investigated experimentally.

  • Plastic plane stress solutions are given for a center cracked strip, characterized by the Ramberg-Osgood plastic index, under bi-axial tension. Using a power law hardening stress-strain relation, an incremental plasticity finite element formulation is developed, and simple formulation is given for computing J-integral with nodal displacements. The near tip angular distribution of von Mises effective stress doesn't differ significantly in magnitude according to the change of loading stress and bi-axial load combination factor. But, for smaller plastic index, the location of its maximum value moves vertically at a head of crack. J-integral value, in the plastic zone near crack tip, decreases with load combination factor for large and small plastic index.

  • This study aims to visualize the Marangoni flow inside a droplet placed on heated hydrophobic surface and to measure its internal velocity field. The experimental result shows that the internal velocity increases with the increase of the plate temperature. In addition, the temperature difference induces the initial flow and drives the Marangoni circulation inside the droplet as soon as the evaporation starts (i.e. the thermal Marangoni flow). The fluorescence particles in the droplet trace two large-scale counter-rotating vortex pairs yielding the downwards flow along the vertical central axis. These vortex pairs gradually become small and move towards the contact line as time goes by, and this Marangoni flow sustains only for a half of the total evaporation time.

  • The explicit formulation of the J-integral and the M-integral is constructed in terms of the stress intensity factor and the higher order stress coefficients for Mode II cracks under small or large scale yielding. Furthermore, the stress intensity factor and the higher order stress coefficients as well are computed with the aid of the two-state J- and the M-integral, which is found to be accurate and efficient. It is found that the contribution from the higher order singularities to the J-integral is closely related to the configuration of the plastic zone.

  • An excellent mesh construction is of Importance in yielding good results of finite element analysis. The new mesh generation algorithm, which offsets boundaries inward, was developed on the basis of a looping method. An user interface technique and automatic splitting lines which both divide a given domain into subdomains manually or automatically, were used. In addition, the separation method has advantages to prevent the large scale of element size and to control numbers of nodes and elements. This new mesh generation algorithm was proved in practice.
