Since large space structures(LSS) such as a space station, a solar power station satellite, etc., are theoretically distributed parameter and infinite-dimensional system, they have to be modeled into large finite-dimensional systems for control system design. Besides, there are fundamental problems in active vibration control of the large flexible structures. For example, a modeled large finite-dimensional system must be controlled with a much smaller dimensional controller. This causes the spillover phenomenon which degrades the control performances and reduces the stability margin. Furthermore, it may destabilize the entire feedback control system. In this paper, we proposed a novel control method for spillover suppression in the control of large flexible structures by using eigenstructure assignment. Its effectiveness in spillover suppression is investigated and verified by the numerical experiments using an example of the simply supported flexible beam which is modeled to have four controlled modes and eight uncontrolled modes.

Although large space structures(LSS) such as a space station, a solar power station satellite, etc., are theoretically distributed parameter and infinite-dimensional systems, they have to be modeled into a lumped parameter and large finite-dimensional system for control system design. Besides, there remains the fundamental problem that the modeled large finite-dimensional system must be controled with a much smaller dimensional controller due to the limitation of computing resources. This causes the spillover phenomenon which degrades control performances and reduces the stability margin. Furthermore, it may destabilize the entire feedback control system. In this paper, we propose a novel spillover suppression method in the active vibration control of large flexible structures by using eigenstructure assignment. Its validity and effectiveness are investigated and verified by the numerical experiments using a simply supported flexible beam, which is modeled to have four controlled modes and eight uncontrolled modes.

Linear second-order matrix systems representing dynamics of large flexible structures are recast in a state space form. By can efficient partial decoupling technique, a few of low frequency modes are decoupled from the rest of modes, and an optimal control procedure is developed in such a way that damping is added to the selected modes without control spillover to uncontrolled modes. Since the partial decoupling requires only eigenvectors of the sected modes, the computing time can be reduced significantly in large systems. Therefore, the method of partial decoupling and control developed in this work may be applicable to vibration contorl of large flexible space structures.

A nonlinear dynamic modeling method for simply supported structures undergoing large overall motion is suggested. The modeling method employs Rayleigh-Ritz mode technique and Von Karman nonlinear strain measures. Numerical study shows that the suggested modeling method provides qualitatively different results from those of the Classical Linear Cartesian modeling method. Especially, natural frequency variations and residual deformation due to membrane strain effects are observed in the numerical results obtained by the suggested modeling method.
The wind-induced dynamic response of large-span flexible structures includes two important components-background response and resonant response. However, it is difficult to separate the two components in time-domain. To solve the problem, a relational expression of wavelet packet coefficients and power spectrum is derived based on the principles of digital signal processing and the theories of wavelet packet analysis. Further, a new approach is proposed for separation of the background response from the resonant response. Then a numerical example of frequency detection is provided to test the accuracy and the spectral resolution of the proposed approach. In the engineering example, the approach is applied to compute the power spectra of the wind-induced response of a large-span roof structure, and the accuracy of spectral estimation for stochastic signals is verified. The numerical results indicate that the proposed approach is efficient and accurate with high spectral resolution, so it is applicable for power spectral computation of various response signals of structures induced by the wind. Moreover, the background and the resonant response time histories are separated successfully using the proposed approach, which is sufficiently proved by detailed verifications. Therefore, the proposed approach is a powerful tool for the verification of the existing frequency-domain formulations.
Deformation measurement of large scale structures, such as the ground beds of high-rise buildings, tunnels, bridge, and railways, are important for insuring service quality and safety. The pose-relay videometrics method and displacement-relay videometrics method have already presented to measure the pose of non-intervisible objects and vertical subsidence of unstable areas, respectively. Both methods combine the cameras and cooperative markers to form the camera series networks. Based on these two networks, we propose two novel videometrics methods with closed-loop camera series network for deformation measurement of large scale structures. The closed-loop camera series network offers "closed-loop constraints" for the camera series network: the deformation of the reference points observed by different measurement stations is identical. The closed-loop constraints improve the measurement accuracy using camera series network. Furthermore, multiple closed-loops and the flexible combination of camera series network are introduced to facilitate more complex deformation measurement tasks. Simulated results show that the closed-loop constraints can enhance the measurement accuracy of camera series network effectively.

Large-scale single-crystal organic nanowire arrays were generated using a direct printing method (liquidbridge- mediated nanotransfer molding) that enables the simultaneous synthesis, alignment and patterning of nanowires from molecular ink solutions. Using this method, single-crystal organic nanowires can easily be synthesized by self-assembly and crystallization of organic molecules within the nanoscale channels of molds, and these nanowires can then be directly transferred to specific positions on substrates to generate nanowire arrays by a direct printing process. Repeated application of the direct printing process can be used to produce organic nanowire-integrated electronics with two- or three-dimensional complex structures on large-area flexible substrates. This efficient manufacturing method is used to fabricate all-organic nanowire field-effect transistors that are integrated into device arrays and inverters on flexible plastic substrates.
The main objective of this paper is to develop an innovative methodology for the vibration suppression control of the multiple degrees-of-freedom (MDOF) flexible structure. The proposed structure represented in this research as a clamped-free-free-free truss type plate is rotated by motors. The controller has two loops for tracking and vibration suppression. In addition to stabilizing the actual system, the proposed feedback control is based on a genetic algorithm (GA) to seek the primary optimal control gain for tracking and stabilization purposes. Moreover, input shaping is introduced for the control scheme that limits motion-induced elastic vibration by shaping the reference command. Experimental results are presented, demonstrating that, in the control loop, roll and yaw angles track control and elastic mode stabilization. It was also demonstrated that combining the input shaper with the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) feedback method has been shown to yield improved performance in controlling the flexible structure system. The broad range of problems discussed in this research is valuable in civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering for flexible structures with MDOM motion.
This paper presents a global mode modeling of space structures and a control scheme from the practical point of view. Since the size of the satellite has become bigger and the accuracy of attitude control more strictly required, it is necessary to consider the structural flexibility of the spacecraft. Although it is well known that the finite element (FE) model can accurately model the flexibility of the satellite, there are associated problems : FE model has the system matrix with high order and does not provide any physical insights, and is available only after all structural features have been decided. Therefore, it is almost impossible to design attitude and orbit controller using FE model unless the structural features are in place. In order to deal with this problem, the control design scheme with the global mode (GM) model is suggested. This paper describes a flexible structure modeling and three-axis controller design process and demonstrates the adequate performance of the design with respect to the maneuverability by applying it to a large flexible spacecraft model.

Over the past decade, the major efforts for lowering the cost of electronics has been devoted to increasing the packaging efficiency of the integrated circuits (ICs), which is defined by the ratio of all devices on system-level board compared to the area of the board, and to working on a larger but cheaper substrates. Especially, in flexible electronics, the latter has been the favorable way along with using novel nanomaterials that have excellent mechanical flexibility and electrical properties as active channel materials and conductive films. Here, the tool for achieving large area patterning is by printing methods. Although diverse printing methods have been investigated to produce highly-aligned structures of the nanomaterials with desired patterns, many require laborious processes that need to be further optimized for practical applications, showing a clear limit to the design of the nanomaterial patterns in a large scale assembly. Here, we demonstrate the alignment of highly ordered and dense silicon (Si) NW arrays to anisotropically etched micro-engraved structures using a simple evaporation process. During evaporation, entropic attraction combined with the internal flow of the NW solution induced the alignment of NWs at the corners of pre-defined structures. The assembly characteristics of the NWs were highly dependent on the polarity of the NW solutions. After complete evaporation, the aligned NW arrays were subsequently transferred onto a flexible substrate with 95% selectivity using a direct gravure printing technique. As proof-of-concept, flexible back-gated NW field effect transistors (FETs) were fabricated. The fabricated FETs had an effective hole mobility of 0.17 $cm2/V{\cdot}s$ and an on/off ratio of ${\sim}1.4{\times}104$. These results demonstrate that our NW gravure printing technique is a simple and effective method that can be used to fabricate high-performance flexible electronics based on inorganic materials.
