Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to explore the influence of vibration frequency and amplitude on the aerodynamic performance of a rectangular cylinder with an aspect ratio of B/D=5 (B: breadth; D: depth of cylinder) at a Reynolds number of 22,000 near resonance frequency. In smooth flow conditions, the research employs a sequence of three-dimensional simulations under forced vibration with diverse frequency ratios fe / fo = 0.8-1.2 (fe : oscillation frequency; fo : Strouhal frequency when the rectangular cylinder is stationary ) and oscillation amplitudes Ah/D = 0.05 - 0.3. The individual influences of fe / fo and Ah/D on the characteristics of integrated and distributed aerodynamic forces are the focal points of discussion. For the integrated aerodynamic force, particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of the dependence of velocity-proportional component C1 and displacement-proportional component C2 of unsteady aerodynamic force on amplitude and frequency ratio. Near the resonance frequency, the dependencies of C1 and C2 on amplitude are stronger than that of frequency ratio. For the distributed aerodynamic force, the increase in frequency and amplitude promotes the position of the main vortex core and reattachment to the leading edge in the streamwise direction. In the spanwise direction, vibration enhances the spanwise correlation of aerodynamic force to weaken the three-dimensional effect of the flow field, and a lower frequency ratio and larger amplitude amplify this effect.
Pack micropiles were recently developed to improve pile capacity of general micropiles. Pack micropiles were made by warping thread bar or steel pipe of general micropile by geotexlile pack and grouting inside the pack with pressure. According to the pressure, the boring hole could be enlarged. A series of pile uplift tests were performed on three micropiles. Two out of the three piles were the pack micropiles and the other was the general micropile, in which a thread bar was used in the boring hole. According to the pressure applied to the pack micropiles, the diameter of boring hole was enlarged from 152 mm to 220 mm. Unit skin friction mobilized on side surfaces of micropiles increased with displacement of pile head and reached on a constant value, which represents that the relative displacement between piles (or thread bar) and soils was reached on critical state. And the uplift resistance of pack micropile was higher than that of general micropile. Two reasons can be considered: One is that the frictional surface increases due to enlarging diameter of boring holes and the other is that the unit skin friction could increase due to compressing effect of surrounding soils by soil displacement as much as the enlarging volume of boring hole. The compression effect appeared at deeper layer rather than surface layer. The unit skin friction mobilized on micropiles with small diameter was higher than the ones on large bored piles.
This study attempted to analyze the distribution of stress, to examine the bending effect in the mandible according to the pulling directions and determine on which pulling directions are adequate when an orthopedic force was applied to the mandible. An orthopedic force, 500gm, was applied to the gnathion, one point of the chin area, in three directions. The three directions were ; high puli' from gnathion to the center of condyle head, and vertical pull, from gnathion to a parallel line with the posterior border of the ramus, and medium pull, from the gnathion to a parallel line with the lower border of mandible. The distribution of principal stress, bending moment and amount of displacement within the mandible was analyzed by a 3-dimensional finite element method and that of the various portions of mandible were computed and compared according to the pulling directions. The results were as follows : 1. The bending moment of each part of a mandible has been found to be markedly larger in case of vertical pull than in case of either high pull or medium pull. In vertical pull the bending moment turned out to largest at the condyle head and neck portion, the gonial angle portion, the coronoid portion and the ascending ramus portion, respectively, while comparatively large at the cuspid and bicuspid portion and the first molar portion. In case of high pull it was largest at the gonial angle portion and becoming smaller at the coronoid portion, the ascending ramus portion, the condyle head and neck portion, and the cuspid and bicuspid portion, in that order. In case of medium pull, however, the bending moment was largest at the condyle head and neck portion, becoming smaller at the first molar portion, the ascending ramus portion, the coronoid portion, the cuspid and bicuspid portion, and gonial angle portion, in that order. 2. As for the bending effect it was calculated to be mostly oriented downward at the mandibular body and backward at the mandibular ramus in both high pull and vertical pull. In case of medium pull it was oriented upward at the mandibular body and forward at the mandibular ramus. 3. The bending effect also turned out to be mostly oriented outward in case of high pull and medium pull, and inward in vertical pull. 4. At the mandibular body and ramus, the bending effect in the upward-downward direction and that in the forward-backward direction were found to be larger than in the inward-outward direction. 5. If and when we expect any correcting effect on the mandibular protrusion by means of the chin cup appliance, we can say sure as conclusion that high pull and vertical pull are more effective than medium pull.

Fast bridge construction has been increasingly needed according to the changed construction environment. This paper deals with quasi-static tests on precast piers for bridge substructures. One of the most crucial aspect of the design of precast prestressed concrete bridge piers is the seismic performance. Seven precast pier elements were fabricated. The amount of prestressing bars, the prestressing force, and the location and number of the joint between segments were the main test parameters. Test results showed that the introduced axial prestress made the restoration of the deformation under small lateral displacement and minor damage. However, there was no effect of the prestress when the plastic hinge region was damaged severely due to large lateral displacement. Judging from the observed damage, the design of the joints in precast piers should be done for the first joint between the foundation and the pier segment. The amount of the necessary prestressing steel may be designed to satisfy the P-M diagram according to the service loads, not by having the same steel ratio as normal RC bridge piers. In order to satisfy the current required displacement ductility, it is necessary to have the same amount of the transverse reinforcements as RC piers. As the steel ratio increases, the energy absorption capacity increases. The number of joints showed a little influence on the energy absorption capacity.
Response of the pipeline crossing fault is considered as the large strain problem. Proper estimation of the pipeline response plays important role in mitigation studies. In this study, an advanced continuum modeling including material non-linearity in large strain deformations, hardening/softening soil behavior and soil-pipeline interaction is applied. Through the application of a fully nonlinear analysis based on an explicit finite difference method, the mechanics of the pipeline behavior and its interaction with soil under large strains is presented in more detail. To make the results useful in oil and gas engineering works, a continuous pipeline of two steel grades buried in two clayey soil types with four different crossing angles of 30°, 45°, 70° and 90° with respect to the pipeline axis have been considered. The results are presented as the fault movement corresponding to different damage limit states. It was seen that the maximum affected pipeline length is about 20 meters for the studied conditions. Also, the affected length around the fault cutting plane is asymmetric with about 35% and 65% at the fault moving and stationary block, respectively. Local buckling is the dominant damage state for greater crossing angle of 90° with the fault displacement varying from 0.4 m to 0.55 m. While the tensile strain limit is the main damage state at the crossing angles of 70° and 45°, the cross-sectional flattening limit becomes the main damage state at the smaller 30° crossing angles. Compared to the stiff clayey soil, the fault movement resulting 3% tensile strain limit reach up to 40% in soft clayey soil. Also, it was seen that the effect of the pipeline internal pressure reaches up to about 40% compared to non-pressurized condition for some cases.
This paper presents the effect of pile diameter on the lateral behavior of offshore pile for wind turbine. The material parameters of the soils were estimated through SPT on the Southwestern offshore area in Korea, where the first wind farm is planned. The FDM software, FLAC3D, and LPile were adopted to derive the load-displacement curve, p-y curve, and maximum bending moment at a specified displacement. It was found that the results from softwares significantly differ and the LPile could overestimate the allowable capacity. The maximum bending moment along the pile with 2m diameter could be as large as four times the bending moment with 1m diameter. Similar trend was observed for the allowable lateral capacity.

In this study, finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the track irregularity of the existing track system on urban transit according to the large-scale excavation work that is constructed adjacent to the serviced line. Based on the numerical analysis, the effect of track irregularity generated during the step-by-step construction process was analytically derived, and the stability in terms of track deformation was evaluated through comparison with related standards. As the results, in the case of track irregularity items evaluated based on the relative displacement difference at a certain distance, such as alignment and vertical irregularity, it occurred most clearly at the location where deformation of the existing structure begins, such as the end point of adjacent excavation work. On the other hand, the overall vertical and horizontal displacement of the track was the largest deformation at the center of the construction section. The vulnerable position of the deformed side of the existing structure due to adjacent excavation is analytically proven that the both of the end point section and the center of the construction can be a vulnerable position in terms of track irregularity.

Ship designers make every efforts to get faster ships in accordance with the development of the Naval Architecture. But for the speed lying over factor length ratio 2.5-3.0, we could put a powerful engine into the conventional round bottom displacement type vessels, but it is very difficult in view point of economy, weight and volume. The principal cause of these speed obstacles is the wave making resistance and researchers are trying to decrease this resistance. One of the resolving ways, planing hulls were applied to small high boats. Planing hull's advantage is not restricted to speed, but the workmanship of the planing hull is easier than those of displacement type vessels of round bottom. Planing hull, therefore, are widely applicable to the intermediate speed boats, which don't have enough high speed to take planing advantage, as well as high speed boats. We will discuss related phenomena of the planing hull in details and this paper we particularly interested in the interjection point(speed length ratio 3.0-3.5 by Mr. D. De Groots) between semi-planing and full planing hulls on the resistance characteristic curve. The paper by Prof. Keuck Chun Kim, "Some Characteristics of Straight Framed V-bottom Hull Forms", Journal of the society of Naval Architects of Korea, Vol.1, No.1, Dec.5, 1964, is referred to the V-bottom hull forms belonging to low speed region and determines practical applicable limit of the speed length ratio combined with construction costs, under which are still used by large commercial vessels. This is the interesting contrast between his and authors. We will further discuss the speed length ratio which is considered as a beginning point to planing effect. For this analysis, we choose 3 model ships: Model (1) and (2) have the same principal dimensions, model 3 varied dimension. Model (1) is full-planing hull, (2) is semi-planing hull and (3) is complete planing hull. They are aimed to collect proper design data for purposed ships.
Sonoelastography is an ultrasound-based technique that visualizes the elastic properties of soft tissues by measuring the tissue motion generated by an externally applied vibration. In this paper. the characteristics of wave generation in soft tissues due to an acoustic vibrator are studied. The effects of modal patterns on the detectability of lesions such as tumors in senoelastography are also investigated These are accomplished by analyzing the vibration patterns calculated using theoretical equations and finite element methods in halt space, infinite plate. and finite-sized tissue. A finite-width source generates shear waves with large amplitude Propagating in specific directions. and the generation characteristics depend both on the width and frequency of the vibrator. as well as the distance from it. It is shown in a finite-sized tissue that the lesion detection in displacement images is quit dependent on the modal patterns inside tissue. In contrast it Is also found that the lesion detectability in strain images is less dependent on the modal Patterns and is much better than that in displacement images.

Since the composite ground design method is easy to apply for calculation or numerical analysis, it is applied to the design of cement mixing methods. However, the comparison studies between analysis and actual results such as a trial test and construction for the cement mixing method are few because the composite ground design method was developed for the compaction pile (SCP, GCP) methods. In this study, the results of various analysis methods, such as the composite ground analysis method (1 case) and the individual pile method (3 cases), were compared with actual measurements through a two-dimensional finite element numerical analysis. In case of the surface settlements, the results of study show that the individual plate method was larger than the actual measurements, while other methods are similar. The settlements at the under ground of the improved area is overestimated in all analysis methods. When comparing numerical analysis results for the horizontal displacement, and ground reaction forces, the individual pile method in equivalent wall concept was found to be the most similar to the measurements. The composite ground method was not able to predict the behavior of stress transfer (Arching effect) and it turned out that the prediction of horizontal displacement was too large.
