  • The importance of geospatial information is increasingly highlighted in the defense domain. Accurate and up-to-date geospatial data is essential for situational awareness, target analysis, and mission planning in millitary operations. The use of high-resolution geospatial data in military operations requires large storage and fast image processing capabilities. Efficient image processing is required for tasks such as extracting useful information from satellite images and creating 3D terrain for mission planning, In this paper, we designed a cloud-based operational situation mixed reality visualization system that utilizes large-scale geospatial information distributed processed on a cloud server based on the container orchestration platform Kubernetes. We implemented a prototype and confirmed the suitability of the design.

  • A lot of the data currently measured is measured based on indicators, but since the height value of the measurement point is not used as basic data, difficulties arise when trying to use it in a three-dimensional geographic information system. Various methods can be used to create polygons by drawing points on the surface using topographic information or extracting the height value of each measurement point on the surface in order to display large quantities on the surface. Among the various types of data expression methods, this study attempts a data construction and display method to improve visualization performance of time series measurement data expressed on the surface, and examines its procedures and strengths and weaknesses.

  • Given a directed graph, we can determine how the user's preference moves from one product item to another. In this graph called "preference transition network", each node represents the product item while its edge pointing to the other nodes represents the transition of user's preference. However, with the large number of items make the network become more complex, unclear and difficult to be interpreted. In order to address this problem, this paper proposes a visualization technique in preference transition analysis based on recency and frequency. By adapting these two elements, the semantic meaning of each item and its transition can be clearly identified by its different types of node size, color and edge style. The experiment in a sales data has shown the results of the proposed approach.

  • According to the regulation of IMO, oil discharge from ships is allowed under 15ppm only and an oil filtering equipment is essential. However, for large ships using heavy fuel oil of over S.G 0.98 and viscosity 380cSt and system oil, it has been in difficulty to process with existing filtering type of oily water separator. A parallel plate type oily water separator which is one of gravity type separators can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is an efficient method in dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. This work is focused on the fundamental investigation of the performance of the plate type oily water separator by visualization method and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement to acquire multi-point velocity data simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the space of the plates acts a significant role in separating process and it was found that an important point to minimize a vortex flow is to flow a large amount of fluid in space of the plates in order to promote the efficiency of separation.

  • Information visualization in information retrieval is a creating tool that enables us to observe, manipulate, search, navigate, explore, filter, discover, understand, interact with large volumes of data for more rapidly and far more effectively to discover hidden patterns. The focus of this study is to investigate and analyze information visualization techniques in information retrieval system in the three-schematic levels. In result, it was found that first, scientific data, documents, and retrieval result information are visualized through various techniques. Second, information visualization techniques which facilitate navigation and interaction are zoom and pan, focus+context techniques, incremental exploration, and clustering. Third, the visual metaphors used by the visualization systems are presented in the linear structure, hierarchy structure, network structure, and vector scatter structure.

  • Modeling and simulation is important for military training. People can feel perspective when stereoscope images are created using multi-channel visualizations. A submarine oscillates when the submarine is just below the surface of the sea, so that the reconnaissance becomes difficult. Also, the operator should read the information of the target within 6 seconds using the periscope. The operator must have experience. To solve these problems, stereoscopic multi-channel visualization has been tested. The iCAVE system of KAIST provides a large-scale screen, 7 PCs, and 14 projectors to create the stereoscope images. To simulate the motion of a submarine just below the ocean surface, a 4-DOF motion platform is used. The motion data is transmitted to the visual system and the motion platform through the UDP protocol. Variety of weather conditions are created using the Vega Prime software. The stereoscopic multi-channel visualization and the motion platform system created a realistic simulation system.

  • In Big data analysis, text data is mostly unstructured and large-capacity, so analysis was difficult because analysis techniques were not established. Therefore, this study was conducted for the possibility of commercialization through verification of usefulness and problems when applying the big data word cloud technique, one of the text data analysis techniques. In this paper, the limitations and problems of this technique are derived through visualization analysis of the "President UN Speech" using the R program word cloud technique. In addition, by proposing an improved model to solve this problem, an efficient method for practical application of the word cloud technique is proposed.

  • The rapid increase in collateral omics and phenotypic data has enabled data-driven studies for the fast discovery of cancer targets and biomarkers. Thus, it is necessary to develop convenient tools for general oncologists and cancer scientists to carry out customized data mining without computational expertise. For this purpose, we developed innovative software that enables user-driven analyses assisted by knowledge-based smart systems. Publicly available data on mutations, gene expression, patient survival, immune score, drug screening and RNAi screening were integrated from the TCGA, GDSC, CCLE, NCI, and DepMap databases. The optimal selection of samples and other filtering options were guided by the smart function of the software for data mining and visualization on Kaplan-Meier plots, box plots and scatter plots of publication quality. We implemented unique algorithms for both data mining and visualization, thus simplifying and accelerating user-driven discovery activities on large multiomics datasets. The present Q-omics software program (v0.95) is available at http://qomics.sookmyung.ac.kr.

The Analysis of Chosun Danasty Poetry Using 3D Data Visualization (3D 시각화를 이용한 조선시대 시문 분석)

  • With the development of technology for visualizing big-data, tasks such as intuitively analyzing a lot of data, detecting errors, and deriving meaning are actively progressing. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a 3D analysis that collects and stores the writing data in Chinese characters provided by the Korean Classical Database of the Korean Classics Translation Institute, stores and progress the data, and visualizes the writing information in a 3D network diagram. It solves the problem when a large amount of data is expressed in 2D, intuitive that analysis, error detection, meaningful data extraction such as characteristics, similarity, differences, etc. and user convenience can be provided. In this paper, we improved the problems of analyzing Chosun dynasty poetry in Chinese characters using 2D visualization conducted in previous studies.

Design and implementation of the honeycomb structure visualization system for the effective security situational awareness of large-scale networks (대규모 네트워크의 효과적 보안상황 인지를 위한 벌집 구조 시각화 시스템의 설계 및 구현)

  • Due to the increase in size of the computer network, the network security systems such as a firewall, IDS, IPS generate much more vast amount of information related to network security. So detecting signs of hidden security threats has become more difficult. Security personnels' 'Network Security Situational Awareness(NSSA)' is effectively determining the security situation of overall computer network on the basis of the relation between the security events that occur in the several views. The process of situational awareness is divided into three stages of the 'identification,' 'understanding' and 'prediction'. And 'identification' and 'understanding' are prerequisites for 'predicting' and the following appropriate responses. But 'identification' and 'understanding' in the vast amount of information became more difficult. In this paper, we propose Honeycomb security situational awareness visualization system that is designed to help NSSA in large-scale networks by using visualization techniques known effective to the 'identification' and 'understanding' stages. And we identified the empirical effects of this system on the basis of the 'VAST Challenge 2012' data.
