  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a RAC chassis consisting of a rear-guider, a stabilizer and a cross-flow fan. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used in this analysis. In view of the results so far achieved, the distribution trends of static pressure and velocity vector of central region except the edges of a CFFan are similar regardless of the number of revolution, and an eccentric vortex exists around the bottom blade of a CFFan. Also, a reverse flow is found in the region between stabilizer and CFFan. Moreover, near the edges of a CFFan, an eccentric vortex is separated to two vortexes. Also these vortexes increase the velocity near a rear-guider, and guide the flow near a rear-guider into stabilizer inlet. Therefore, the reverse flow region is formed in the bottom of a CFFan.

  • The subcavity passive control technique is used in present study. Cavity-induced pressure oscillation has been investigated numerically for a supersonic three-dimensional flow over rectangular cavities at Mach number 1.83 at the cavity entrance. Time dependent supersonic turbulent flow over cavity were examined by using the three-dimensional, mass-averaged Navier-Stokes equations based on a finite volume scheme and large eddy simulation. The results showed that the resultant amount of attenuation of cavity-induced pressure oscillations was dependent on the length and thickness of the flat plate.

  • The objective of this work is to study various vortical structures from controlled circular jet such as trifurcating and blooming jets. The numerical simulations of flow from a circular jet are carried out at $Re_D=4300$ based on the jet-exit velocity and jet diameter using large eddy simulation with the dynamic Smagorinsky model in a cylindrical coordinate system. The excitation for the controlled jet is achieved by combining axial and helical excitations. The axial velocity controlled by blowing and suction at the jet exit has several peaks in their cycle with respect to ratio of axial to helical excitations. This active control changes the spreading angle and vortical structures in the downstream region.

  • ESPR project started in 1999 with METI and NEDO support as five-years program in order to develop necessary technologies for the next-generation SST engine. In ESPR program, jet noise reduction technologies are focused as environmentally compatible technologies, which are critical to realize next-generation SST. In designing a lobed mixer nozzle which is a jet noise suppression system, there are many difficulties to understand the detailed flow phenomena occurred in the system because of its complexity. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was applied to the lobed mixer nozzle flow analysis in ESPR project. The results demonstrated that LES approach was capable of predicting mixing characteristics of a complicated flow.

  • This paper is a study for accurate iron loss calculation of a cylindrical linear machine for free piston engine. This study presents that it is possible to accurately predict power loss in ferromagnetic laminations under magnetic flux by specially considering the dependence of hysteresis, classical, and excess loss components on the magnetic induction derivative. Significant iron loss in the armature core will not only compromise the machine efficiency, but may also result in excessive heating, which could lead to irreversible deterioration in the machine performance. Thus, correct prediction of power losses under a distorted flux waveform is therefore an important prerequisite to machine design, particularly when dealing with large apparatus where stringent efficiency standards are required. Finally, it will be discussed about the iron loss in various materials of cylindrical linear electric machine by geometric and electrical parameters. It will give elaborate information about the perfect design and design rules of cylindrical linear machine and in parallel tools for the calculation, simulation and design will be available.

  • This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art in the numerical evaluation of wind loads on buildings. Important aspects of numerical modeling including (i) turbulence modeling, (ii) inflow boundary conditions, (iii) ground surface roughness, (iv) near wall treatments, and (vi) quantification of wind loads using the techniques of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are summarized. Relative advantages of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) over Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and hybrid RANS-LES over LES are discussed based on physical realism and ease of application for wind load evaluation. Overall LES based simulations seem suitable for wind load evaluation. A need for computational wind load validations in comparison with experimental or field data is emphasized. A comparative study among numerical and experimental wind load evaluation on buildings demonstrated generally good agreements on the mean values, but more work is imperative for accurate peak design wind load evaluations. Particularly more research is needed on transient inlet boundaries and near wall modeling related issues.

  • This is the continuation of a numerical study on vortex shedding from a blunt trailing-edge of a hydrofoil. In our previous work (Lee et al., 2015), numerical schemes for efficient computations were successfully implemented; i.e. multiple domains, the approximation of domain boundary conditions using cubic spline functions, and particle-based domain decomposition for better load balancing. In this study, numerical results through a hybrid particle-mesh method which adopts the Vortex-In-Cell (VIC) method and the Brinkman penalization model are further rigorously validated through comparison to experimental data at the Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^6$. The effects of changes in numerical parameters are also explored herein. We find that the present numerical method enables us to reasonably simulate vortex shedding phenomenon, as well as turbulent wakes of a hydrofoil.

  • In order to identify positive or negative effect of seawall on wind turbine, a wind tunnel experiment has been conducted with a 1/100 scaled-down model of Goonsan wind farm which is located in West coast along seawall. Wind speedup due to the slope of seawall contributed to about 3% increment of area-averaged wind speed on rotor-plane of a wind turbine which is anticipated to augment wind power generation. From the turbulence measurement and flow visualization, it was confirmed that there would be no negative effect due to flow separation because its influence is confined below wind turbine blades' sweeping height.
