In this study, zeolite (Z-C1) was synthesized using a fusion/hydrothermal method from coal fly ash. The morphological structures of Z-C1 were confirmed to be highly crystalline with a cubic crystal structure. Exchange capacities of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions in a single and a mixed solution reached equilibrium within 120 min. The exchange kinetics of these ions were well predicted by the pseudo-second-order rate equation. The exchange isotherms of the $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions matched the Langmuir isotherm better than the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum cation exchange capacities ($q_m$) obtained by the Langmuir isotherm model were 2.11 mmol/g (84.52 mg/L) and 1.13 mmol/g (27.39 mg/L) for the $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions, respectively.
A POM-membrane was fabricated by immobilizing a keggin type polyoxometalate (POM) H5PV2Mo10O40 onto the surface of microporous flat-sheet polymeric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVFD) membrane using a chemical deposition method. The POM-membrane was characterized by FT-IR, SEM and EDX to confirm existing of the POM onto the membrane surface. The POM-membrane was used to remove an anionic textile dye (Reactive Black 5 named as an RB5) from aqueous phases with a cross-flow membrane filtration and a batch adsorption system. The dye removal efficiency of the POM-membrane using the cross-flow membrane filtration system and the batch adsorption system was about 88% and 98%, respectively. The influence factors such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial dye concentration were investigated to understand the adsorption mechanism of the RB5 dye onto the POM-membrane. To find the best fitting isotherm model, Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Harkins-Jura isotherm models were used to analyze the experimental data. The isotherm analysis showed that the Langmuir isotherm model was found to the best fit for the adsorption data (R2 = 0.9982, qmax = 24.87 mg/g). Also, adsorption kinetic models showed the pseudo second order kinetic model was found the best model to fit the experimental data (R2 = 0.9989, q = 8.29 mg/g, C0 = 15 ppm). Moreover, after four times regeneration with HNO3 acid, the POM-membrane showed high regenerability without losing dye adsorption capacity.
BACKGROUND: Plastics that are used in our daily lives largely end up in the environment. In agricultural environments, plastic wastes and microplastics can be found due to the uses and improper management of plastic products (e.g., vinyl greenhouses and mulching vinyl). Microplastics can also interact with contaminants in the agricultural environment. Therefore, this study was set to investigate the sorption characteristics of tetracycline, one of widely used antibiotics, on microplastics. METHODS AND RESULTS: The sorption tests were carried out with the tetracycline solutions (0-30 mg L-1) and microplastic films prepared from low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The residual tetracycline concentrations were analyzed and fitted to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The tetracycline sorption patterns on LDPE and PVC films were described better with the Freundlich isotherm model than the Langmuir isotherm model. The isotherm model parameters suggested that the maximum sorption amount of tetracyline was greater for PVC, while the sorption affinity was greater for LDPE. CONCLUSION(S): Different types of microplastics can have different sorption characteristics of tetracycline. Therefore, there is a need for continuous research on the interaction of various types and shapes of microplastics and contaminants in the environment.
The relation between the phase-shift profile for the intermediate frequencies and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm at the poly-$Pt/0.1\;M\;H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface has been studied using ac impedance measurements, i.e., the phase-shift methods. The suggested interfacial equivalent circuit consists of the serial connection of the electrolyte resistance ($R_S$), the faradaic resistance $(R_F)$ and the equivalent circuit element $(C_P)$ of the adsorption pseudocapacitance $(C_\varphi)$. The delayed phase shift $(\varphi)$ depends on both the cathode potential (E) and frequency (f), and is given by $\varphi=-tan^{-1}[1/2{\pi}f(R_s+R_F)C_p]$. The phase-shift profile $(\varphi\;vs.\;E)$ for the intermediate frequency (ca. 6Hz) can be used as an experimental method to determine the Langmuir adsorption isotherm (9 vs. E). The equilibrium constant (K) for H adsorption and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{ads})$ of H adsorption at the poly-$Pt/0.1\;M\;H_2SO_4$ electrolyte interface are $1.8\times10^{-4}\;and\;21.4kJ/mol$, respectively. The H adsorption is attributed to the over-potentially deposited hydrogen (OPD H).
The Langmuir adsorption isotherm of the over-potentially deposited hydrogen (OPD H) for the cathodic $H_2$ evolution reaction (HER) at the $poly-Au|0.5M\;H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface has been studied using cyclic voltammetric and ac impedance techniques. The behavior of the phase shift $(0^{\circ}\leq{-\phi}\leq90^{\circ})$ for the optimum intermediate frequency corresponds well to that of the fractional surface coverage $(1\geq{\theta}\geq0)$ at the interface. The phase-shift profile $({-\phi}\;vs.\;E)$ for the optimum intermediate frequency, i.e., the phase-shift method, can be used as a new method to estimate the Langmuir adsorption isotherm $(\theta\;vs.\;E)$ of the OPD H for the cathodic HER at the interface. At the poly-$Au|0.5M\;H_2SO_4$ electrolyte interface, the equilibrium constant (K) and standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{ads})$ of the OPD H are $2.3\times10^{-6}\;and\;32.2\;kJ\;mol^{-1}$, respectively.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the applicability of adsorption models for adsorption properties of adsorbents. For this study, adsorption experiment of $NO_3^-$ ion using anion exchange resin has been investigated under adsorption equilibrium and kinetic in bach process. Adsorption equilibrium experiment were carried out that two conditions is change of adsorbate concentration and change of adsorbent weight. Experiment results have been analyzed by adsorption isotherm models, energy models and kinetic models. Under the condition of change of adsorbate concentration was best described by Sips and Redlich-Perterson isotherm models. However case of change of adsorbent weight was described by Langmuir isotherm models. It seems reasonable to assume that isotherm model was dominated by multiple mechanism according to experiment condition.
The removal of phosphate from surface water is becoming increasingly vital to prevent problems such as eutrophication, particularly near urban areas. Recent requirements to reduce high concentrations of phosphate rely on physicochemical methods and adsorbents that must be effective even under strict conditions. The phosphate removal efficiencies of two adsorbents, Fe-Mn-Si oxide and Fe-Mn oxide, were investigated and the data used to compare kinetics and isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities of the two adsorbents were 47.8 and 35.5 mg-$PO{_4}^{3-}/g$, respectively. Adsorptions in both cases were highly pH dependent; i.e., when the pH increased from 3 to 9, the average adsorption capacities of the two adsorbents decreased approximately 32.7 % and 20.3 %, respectively. The Freundlich isotherm model fitted the adsorption of Fe-Mn-Si oxide more closely than did the Langmuir model. Additionally, anionic solutions decreased adsorption because of competition with the anions in the adsorbing phosphate. Although affected by the presence of competing anions or a humic substance, Fe-Mn-Si oxide has better adsorption capacity than Fe-Mn oxide.
The adsorption process using GAC is one of the most secured methods to remove of phosphate from solution. This study was conducted by impregnating Cu(II) to GAC(GAC-Cu) to enhance phosphate adsorption for GAC. In the preparation of GAC-Cu, increasing the concentration of Cu(II) increased the phosphate uptake, confirming the effect of Cu(II) on phosphate uptake. A pH experiment was conducted at pH 4-8 to investigate the effect of the solution pH. Decrease of phosphate removal efficiency was found with increase of pH for both adsorbents, but the reduction rate of GAC-Cu slowed, indicating electrostatic interaction and coordinating bonding were simultaneously involved in phosphate removal. The adsorption was analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm to determine the maximum phosphate uptake(qm) and adsorption mechanism. According to correlation of determination(R2), Freundlich isotherm model showed a better fit than Langmuir isotherm model. Based on the negative values of qm, Langmuir adsorption constant(b), and the value of 1/n, phosphate adsorption was shown to be unfavorable and favorable for GAC and GAC-Cu, respectively. The attempt of the linearization of each isotherm obtained very poor R2. Batch kinetic tests verified that ~30% and ~90 phosphate adsorptions were completed within 1h and 24 h, respectively. Pseudo second order(PSO) model showed more suitable than pseudo first order(PFO) because of higher R2. Regardless of type of kinetic model, GAC-Cu obtained higher constant of reaction(K) than GAC.
The Langmuir adsorption isotherms of the over-potentially deposited hydrogen (OPD H) fur the cathodic $H_2$ evolution reaction (HER) at the poly-Au and $Rh|0.5M\;H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interfaces have been studied using cyclic voltammetric and ac impedance techniques. The behavior of the phase shift $(0^{\circ}{\leq}{-\phi}{\leq}90^{\circ})$ for the optimum intermediate frequency corresponds well to that of the fractional surface coverage $(1{\geq}{\theta}{\geq}0)$ at the interfaces. The phase-shift profile $({-\phi}\;vs.\;E)$ for the optimum intermediate frequency, i.e., the phase-shift method, can be used as a new electrochemical method to determine the Langmuir adsorption isotherm $({\theta}\;vs.\;E)$ of the OPD H for the cathodic HER at the interfaces. At the poly-Au|0.5M $H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface, the equilibrium constant (K) and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{ads})$ of the OPD H are $2.3\times10^{-6}$ and 32.2kJ/mol, respectively. At the poly-Rh|0.5M $H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface, K and ${\Delta}G_{ads}$ of the OPD H are $4.1\times10^4\;or\;1.2\times10^{-2}$ and 19.3 or 11.0kJ/mol depending on E, respectively. In contrast to the poly-Au electrode interface, the two different Langmuir adsorption isotherms of the OPD H are observed at the poly-Rh electrode interface. The two different Langmuir adsorption isotherms of the OPD H correspond to the two different adsorption sites of the OPD H on the poly-Rh electrode surface.

In this research a adsorbent, PVA-Zeolite bead, was prepared by immobilizing zeolite with PVA. The results of XRD and SEM analysis showed that the prepared PVA-Zeolite beads had porous structure and the zeolite particles were in mobilized within the internal matrix of the beads. The adsorption properties of Sr ion and Cs ion with the adsorbent were studied by different parameters such as effect of pH, adsorption rate, and adsorption isotherm. The adsorption of Sr ion and Cs ion reached equilibrium after 540 minutes. The adsorption kinetics of both ions by the PVA-Zeolite beads were fitted well by the pseudo-second-order model more than pseudo-first-order model. The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Sr ion and Cs ion calculated from Langmuir isotherm model were 52.08 mg/g and 58.14 mg/g, respectively. The external mass transfer step was very fast compared to the intra-particle diffusion step in the adsorption process of Cs ion and Sr ion by the PVA-Zeolite beads. This result implied that the rate controlling step was the intra-particle diffusion step.
