  • Study was made on the spectral characteristics of rock samples including bentonites collected from the northern Ulsan area. The geology of the area consists mainly of sediments of the Kyongsang Series and Bulguksa granite, the Tertiary volcanics, andesites and tuffs. Relative reflectances of meshed samples(2.5~10mm) to BaSO$_4$ are measured at 6 Landsat TM spectral windows (excluding the thermal band) with HHRR, and their reflection charactristics were analysed. In addition, three different data selection schemes including the Eulidean distance, multiple regression, and PCA weight methods were applied to the 30 TM ratio channels, derived from the above 6 bands. The selected data sets were subject to two unsupervised classification techniques(FA and ISODATA) in order to compare the effectiveness for classification of particularly bentonite from others. As a result, in ISODATA analysis the multiple regression model shows the best, followed by the Euliean distances one. The PCA weight model seems to show some confusion. In FA, though difficult for quantitative analysis, the best still seems to be the regression model. Among ratio bands, rations of band 7 or 5 against other bands represent the best contribution in classification of bentonites from others.

  • Geographic Information System (GIS) combined with Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used to estimate the soil erosion of Asan Bay experiment watershed in Korea. Spatial data for each USLE factors were obtained from the Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images and 1/25,000 scale digital contour maps. Sediment yield to Asan Bay was estimated by the sediment delivery ratio and trap efficiency. The estimated sediment yield was compared with observed on the Asan and Sapgyo estuary sub-watershed within Asan Bay experimental watershed for the period from 1981 to 2000. The calculated total annual sediment yields from Asan and Sapgyo estuary sub-watershed to Asan Bay were 5,665tonnes/yr and 6,766tonnes/yr, respectively. The measured sediment yields were 12,937tonnes/yr and 12,395tonnes/yr, respectively on an average.

  • Recently as large sized urban development and the city ward drifting of population are caused, the urban surface temperature is raised very seriously and rapidly. These artificial developments have destroyed the inner and outer landscapes such as topography and have changed complex local climate such as a sudden rise in temperature, the change of wind field and air pollution. In order to clarify this problem visually, the studies on extracting the thermal infrared and the characteristic analysis of local climate in urban area had been performed by using the sixth band of Landsat TM and ETM+. However, there is a need to alternate Landsat TM and ETM+ because these satellite images are not applied any more. Therefore, in this paper it is proposed to use 2 Aster image (2004.4.17 daily 2b03, 2004.10.10 night 2b03) of EOS AM and to extract the surface temperature. Also, the pattern of surface temperature in urban area and the application possibility in local climate study are proposed by verifying the correlation with A WS data. Also, IKONOS image was used to figure out the artificial development area in visual.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial change of water quality pollutant in the upper-stream of Kumho River basin. For this purpose, it compared with ground survey data of water quality measurement, using GIS and Landsat TM image, and then constructed a database of water quality pollutants in the watershed by Arc/Info. Also the land cover classification maps of 1985 and 1997 were prepared using maximum likelihood classification. This study detected and analysed the classified images to produce the area of land cover change per sub-basin. In addition, choropleth maps were prepared with spatial change value of water quality pollutants, and overlay analysis was carried out with weight score for each layer. The results of this study revealed that population, animals and fruit orchards were main factors in the spatial change of water pollution of Kumho River basin. The Comparision of pollutions by sub-basins showed a high pollution value in Daechang-chun and Omok -chun stream which follows through the urban area.

  • The research is to examine urban heat island effects which is resulted from urbanization using thermal infrared band of Landsat TM data and to demonstrate heat island alleviation effects of green spaces through correlation analysis of NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and surface temperature. According to the results, forests which are covered with natural vegetation have a high NDVI digital values, but surface temperature is very low, and urban areas which is composed of artificial paving materials have a low NDVI, surface temperature increases gradually. In summary, the analysis of relationship between NDVI and surface temperature, used in this study, is regarded as one of effective methodologies for proving heat island alleviation effects of vegetation.

  • This study attempts to analyze changes in land use patterns in a compound urban and agricultural city Kimje-si, using LANDSAT TM imagery and to forecast future changes accordingly. As a new approach to supervised classification, HSB(Hue, Saturation, Brightness)-transformed images were used to select training zones, and in doing so classification accuracy increased by more than 5 percent. Land use changes were forecasted by using a cellular automaton algorithm developed by applying Markov Chain techniques, and by taking into account classification results and GIS data, such as population of the pertinent region by area, DEMs, road networks, water systems. Upon comparing the results of the forecast of the land use changes, it appears that geographical features had the greatest influence on the changes. Moreover, a forecast of post-2030 land use change patterns demonstrates that 21.67 percent of mountain lands in Kimje-si is likely to be farmland, and 13.11 percent is likely to become city areas. The major changes are likely to occur in small mountain lands located in the heart of the city. Based on the study result, it seems certain that forecasting future land use changes can help plan land use in a compound urban and agricultural city to procure food resources.

  • In this paper we discussed the processing procedures of histogram equalization(HE) method and brightness preserving bi-histogram equalization(BBHE) method in the contrast enhancement methods for the performance comparison. With remotely sensed image data of Landsat TM we compared the performances of three methods of Min-Max method, HE method, BBHE method. The experimental results demonstrate that the HE method and BBHE method are more effective in the contrast enhancement performances than the Min-Max method. In the HE method the mean brightness of the resultant output images approached to the middle gray level with regardless of input image mean. In the BBHE method, it is capable of preserving the mean brightness of a original image compared to the HE method while enhancing the contrast of original image effectively. Thus BBHE method is provided more natural enhancement effect than the HE method.

  • This study aims to analysis the distribution and change of cropland and forest, the Onseong, Saebyeol, and Eundeok counties on the lower reach of Duman(Tumen) river, northeast Korea, using 1992 year Landsat TM data, 2000 year Landsat ETM data, and digital terrain elevation data(DTED). Land cover and land use of the study areas are classified into cropland, forest, village, and water body, using the supervised classification method including 1:50,000 DTED analysis, image band composition, and principal component analysis(PCA). Results of quantitative analysis present that each growth rate of cropland of Onseong and Eundeok are 22.8% and 14.7% corresponding to decreasing rates of forest, 8% and 13.6% during 8 years from 1992 to 2000. In Onseong, Saebyeol, and Eundeok, each values of mean elevations and slope gradients increased to 192m, 95m, and 91m from 157m, 85m, and 78m, and to 6.6$^{\circ}$, 3.0$^{\circ}$, and 4.4$^{\circ}$ from 5.2$^{\circ}$, 2.5$^{\circ}$, and 3.0$^{\circ}$. Especially, in case of newly developed cropland, the values of mean elevation and mean gradient have 225m, 122m, and 127m, and 9.4$^{\circ}$, 5.1$^{\circ}$, and 8.0$^{\circ}$, in above three regions. These new croplands were developing along to deeper valleys and toward lower hill and mountain slope up to knickpoint zone of gradient change. Deforested lands for cropland have formed irregular pattern of patch-type, and become sources for the sheet erosion, rilling and gulleying in mountain slope and sedimentation in local river channel. Though there were no field checking, analysis using landsat images and GIS mapping can help understand actual environmental problems relating to cropland development of mountain slope in North Korea.

  • This study discusses an effort to build a model to link normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI) and socio-economic indicators derived from village survey (1990, 1993, 1996, and 2000) statistical data in Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. Socio-economics indicators of sub-district level, in this study the number of agricultural households (AH), are aggregated from village level data. NDVI from Landsat-TM resolution data (1989 and 1997) are computed to detect land use/land cover (LULC) dynamics in the sub-district areas. Attention is mainly paid on the examination of agricultural land cover changing in the sub-district level. NDVI measurements might be used to predict AH dynamics as showed by computed linear regression models.
