Among the prerequisite abilities (perception of environment, path planning and position estimation) of an autonomous mobile robot, position estimation has been seldom studied by mobile robot researchers. In most cases, conventional positioin estimation has been performed by placing landmarks or giving the entrire environmental information in advance. Unlikely to the conventional ones, the study addresses a new method that the robot itself can select distinctive features in the environment and save them as landmarks without any a priori knowledge, which can maximize the autonomous behavior of the robot. First, an orjentaion probaility model is applied to construct a lcoal map of robot's surrounding. The feature of the object in the map is then extracted and the map is saved as landmark. Also, presented is the position estimation method that utilizes the correspondence between landmarks and current local map. In dong this, the uncertainty of the robot's current positioin is estimated in order to select the corresponding landmark stored in the previous steps. The usefulness of all these approaches are illustrated with the results porduced by a real robot equipped with ultrasonic sensors.

This paper investigates geometric effect of landmarks on three-dimensional navigation error in landmark-based vision navigation systems. Dilution of precision is derived for landmark measurement error on the focal plane of the camera and separately expressed in position DOP and attitude DOP. Values of DOP are observed for various configurations of landmarks.
This paper proposes an underwater localization algorithm using probabilistic object recognition. It is organized as follows; 1) recognizing artificial objects using imaging sonar, and 2) localizing the recognized objects and the vehicle using EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) based SLAM. For this purpose, we develop artificial landmarks to be recognized even under the unstable sonar images induced by noise. Moreover, a probabilistic recognition framework is proposed. In this way, the distance and bearing of the recognized artificial landmarks are acquired to perform the localization of the underwater vehicle. Using the recognized objects, EKF-based SLAM is carried out and results in a path of the underwater vehicle and the location of landmarks. The proposed localization algorithm is verified by experiments in a basin.

A service robot can identify its own position relative to landmarks, the locations of which are known in advance. The main contribution of this research is that it gives various ways of making the self-localizing error smaller by referring to special landmarks which are developed as high gain reflection material and coded array associations. In this paper, the authors propose a set of indices to evaluate the accuracy of self-localizing methods using the selective reflection landmark and infrared projector, and the indices are derived from the sensitivity enhancement using 3D distortion calibration of camera. And then, the accurarcy of self-localizing a mobile robot with landmarks based on the indices is evaluated, and a rational way to minimize to reduce the computational cost of selecting the best self-localizing method. The simulation results show a high accuracy and a good performance.

This paper proposes a novel monocular vision-based SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) method using both position and orientation information of ceiling lamps. Conventional approaches used corner or line features as landmarks in their SLAM algorithms, but these methods were often unable to achieve stable navigation due to a lack of reliable visual features on the ceiling. Since lamp features are usually placed some distances from each other in indoor environments, they can be robustly detected and used as reliable landmarks. We used both the position and orientation of a lamp feature to accurately estimate the robot pose. Its orientation is obtained by calculating the principal axis from the pixel distribution of the lamp area. Both corner and lamp features are used as landmarks in the EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) to increase the stability of the SLAM process. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme works successfully in various indoor environments.

In this paper, a location identification for a cleaning robot using a camera shooting forward a room ceiling which kas three point landmarks is introduced. These three points are made from a laser source which is placed on an auto charger. A fisheye lens covering almost 150 degrees is utilized and the image is transformed to a camera image grabber. The widly shot image has an inevitable distortion even if wide range is coverd. This distortion is flatten using an image warping scheme. Several vision processing techniques such as an intersection extraction erosion, and curve fitting are employed. Next, three point marks are identified and their correspondence is investigated. Through this image processing and image distortion adjustment, a robot location in a wide geometrical coverage is identified.
Accurate analysis of facial asymmetry prior to any orthognathic or orthodontic treatment plan is essential in ensuring good treatment result. Dental CBCT (Cone-beam Computed Tomography) provides as actual three-dimensional measurements of distance and angle without any radiographic magnification as medical CT provides, while its field of view is limited to the oral and maxillofacial area. CBCT is a useful tool for the diagnosis of facial asymmetry. The coordinates of facial landmarks are obtained from the 3D reconstruction software which enables the establishment of perpendicular planes and the identification of the landmarks. Then, the bilateral discrepancies of the landmarks are obtained as spherical polar coordinates which can show the amount of asymmetry and its direction. A method of 3D analysis of facial asymmetry using CBCT is introduced in this report.

This paper proposes a vision-based indoor localization method for autonomous vehicles. A single upward-facing digital camera was mounted on an autonomous vehicle and used as a vision sensor to identify artificial landmarks and any natural corner features. An interest point detector was used to find the natural features. Using an optical flow detection algorithm, information related to the direction and vehicle translation was defined. This information was used to track the vehicle movements. Random noise related to uneven light disrupted the calculation of the vehicle translation. Thus, to estimate the vehicle translation, a Kalman filter was used to calculate the vehicle position. These algorithms were tested on a vehicle in a real environment. The image processing method could recognize the landmarks precisely, while the Kalman filter algorithm could estimate the vehicle's position accurately. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed approaches can be implemented in practical situations.

As one of the most interesting scenes, landmarks constitute a large percentage of the vast amount of scene images available on the web. On the other hand, a specific "landmark" usually has some characteristics that distinguish it from surrounding scenes and other landmarks. These two observations make the task of accurately estimating geographic information from a landmark image necessary and feasible. In this paper, we propose a method to identify landmark location by means of landmark recognition in view of significant viewpoint, illumination and temporal variations. We use GPS-based clustering to form groups for different landmarks in the image dataset. The images in each group rather fully express the possible views of the corresponding landmark. We then use a combination of edge and color histogram to match query to database images. Initial experiments with Zubud database and our collected landmark images show that is feasible.
In this paper, we propose a framework that attempts to incorporate landmarks into a segment-based Mandarin speech recognition system. In this method, landmarks provide boundary information and phonetic class information, and the information is used to direct the decoding process. To prove the validity of this method, two kinds of landmarks that can be reliably detected are used to direct the decoding process of a segment model (SM) based Mandarin LVCSR (large vocabulary continuous speech recognition) system. The results of our experiment show that about 30% decoding time can be saved without an obvious decrease in recognition accuracy. Thus, the potential of our method is demonstrated.
