  • In this study, biaxially oriented film process was used to improve barrier property of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) blends by inducing a laminar morphology of the dispersed phase in the matrix phase. In order to examine the extent of deformation during melt extrusion process, the rheological properties of the resins were measured and the viscosity ratio of the dispersed phase to the continuous phase was determined. The effects of compatibilizer content, draw ratio, and draw temperature on the oxygen permeability and morphology of biaxially drawn blend films were studied. The laminar morphology of the EVOH phase with a larger area of thinner layer induced by biaxial orientation was found to result in a significant increase in oxygen barrier property of PP/EVOH (85/15) blends by about 10 times relative to the pure PP When both PP-g-MAH and ionomer were used as the compatibilizers, there existed an optimum level of compatibilizer content for obtaining improved barrier properties with a well developed laminar structure. In addition, higher draw ratio and draw temperature were found to be more favorable processing conditions in obtaining higher barrier blends.

  • The morphology and size distribution of chromium oxides and the concentration measurement of atomic arsenic have been studied in laminar diffusion flames. Nitrogen was added to vary flame temperatures in hydrogen flames. Ethene flames were used in order to investigate the potential for interaction between the soot aerosol that is formed in these flames and the chromium aerosol. Two sources of chromium compounds were introduced: chromium nitrate and chromium hexacarbonyl. A detailed investigation of the morphology was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amounts of Cr(VI) and total Cr were determined by a spectrophotometric method and by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, respectively. Also, LIF was used for the measurement of atomic arsenic, which was excited at 197.2 nm and was detected at 249.6 nm. Results showed that the morphology of the particles varied with the flame temperature and with the chromium source. The particles were characterized by porous structures, cenospheres and agglomerated dense particles when chromium nitrate solution was added to the flames. At low to moderate temperatures, porous sintered cenospheric structures were formed, in some cases with a blow hole. At higher temperatures, an agglomerated cluster which was composed of loosely sintered submicron particles was observed. It was also found that the emission of Cr(VI) from the undiluted $H_2$ flame was more than 10 times larger than in the 50% $H_2$ / 50% $N_2$ flame on a mass basis. Single point LIF measurement of atomic arsenic indicated that arsenic exist only in the low temperature, fuel rich region.

  • The morphology of deposits on $15-{\mu}m$ thin SiC filaments has been investigated with SEM and compared with UV-excited laser induced broadband fluorescences in co-flowing, propane laminar diffusion flames in a reduced oxidizer environment. The homogeneous morphology of droplet-like deposits inner flame zone and the agglomeration of condensed-phase deposits and the transition to soots from grown up droplet-like precursors with approaching the flame surface can be observed in a barely sooting flame. The average size of the mature soots deposited in the luminous flame edge is scarcely dependent on their axial position in a confined flame under reduced oxidizer condition. A double structure of PAH fluorescence is observed in near-extinction flames with further decreasing of oxidizer. A comparison of the PAH fluorescence with the morphologies of deposits indicates that appearance of the "dark" hollow zone is caused by a decreased number density of developed liquid-phase large molecules and the outer weak fluorescence zone is caused by the diffusion of gas-phase small molecules.

  • The morphology of deposits on $15-{\mu}m$ thin SiC filaments has been investigated with SEM in a co-flowing, propane/air laminar diffusion flame. The average size of mature soot particles deposited in the luminous flame edge is strongly dependent on their axial position in a typical heavily sooting flame. The surface growth of liquid-phase PAHs molecules and the transition to soots from fully-developed precursors could be observed in the radial deposition of the flame. Two sooting regimes were found: one is the transition from the condensed-phase precursors; the other is the aggregation of smaller soot particles (or chains of them) to be carried along particle path lines. In the high temperature flame edge outside the soot luminous flame surface, the very thin fiber-like structures, which are about 10 nm thick, were found.

  • Compound calcrete deposits are recognized from the Dadaepo Formation in Dusong peninsula, Pusan, and their textures, structures, morphology, and stratigraphic distribution are examined. The Dadaepo Formation in study area consists of fluvial plain deposits including floodplain-lake deposits, and the compound calcrete deposits occur above floodplain deposits and below lacustrine deposits. The compound calcrete deposits are composed of nodular to massive (micritic), laminar, nodular, nodular to massive (marly), and marly calcrete deposits. In these calcretes, circumgranular and curved cracks, alveolar structures, fitted peloids, tubular fenestrae with laminar micrite wall (rootlet casts), microstalactic calcite, and tepee structures are observed, which indicates that they are calcic paleosols. Considering their stratigraphic occurrences and pedogenic origin, compound calcrete deposits are interpreted to have formed on distal fluvial plain to palustrine environment by the repetetion of deposition and subsequent calcification due to alternation of lake expansion and contraction. The repetetion of calcrete formation suggests that arid climatic condition was alternated with humid condition in short-term period. Such alternated paleoclimatic condition is similar to those of the Sindong and Hayang groups, and indicates that short-term fluctuations from arid to humid climate were prevailing in overall Gyeongsang Basin. In stratigraphic sense, the compound calcrete deposits can be used as a marker deposit for the correlation of the Dadaepo Formation.

  • The effect of the migration of nanoparticles near the wall of a channel on the convective heat transfer in a laminar flow of $SiO_2$ nanoparticle suspensions (nanofluids) under constant wall heat flux boundary conditions was numerically and experimentally investigated in this study. The dynamic thermal conductivity of the aqueous $SiO_2$ nanofluids was measured using T-type thermocouples attached to the outer surface of a stainless steel circular tube (with a length of 1 m and diameter of 1.75 mm). The nanofluids used in this study were synthesized by dispersing $SiO_2$ spherical nanoparticles with a diameter of 24 nm in de-ionized water (DIW). The enhancement of the thermal conductivity of the nanofluids (e.g., an increase of up to 7.9 %) was demonstrated by comparing the temperature profiles in the flow of the nanofluids with that in the flow of the basefluids (i.e., DIW). However, this trend was not demonstrated in the computational analysis, because the numerical models were based on continuum assumptions and flow features involving nanoparticles in a stable colloidal solution. Thus, to explore the non-continuum effects, such as the modification of the morphology caused by nanoparticle-wall interactions on the heat exchanging surfaces (e.g., the isolated and dispersed precipitation of the nanoparticles), additional experiments were performed using DIW right after the measurements using the nanofluids.

  • Calretinin is thought to play roles in calcium buttering. Its site of expression has been extensively studied in the central nervous system. We previously reported (Hong et at.,2002, Neurosci. Res.,44: 325-335) calretinin expression in the superficial layers of the cat superior colliculus (SC). In the present study, we studied the distribution of calretinin in the intermediate and deep layers by immunocytochemistry. We found striking differences in calretinin immunoreactivity among the superficial, intermediate, and deep layers. In contrast to the superficial layers, the intermediate and deep layers contained many calretinin-immunoreactive (IR) neurons. They formed two laminar tiers. The first tier, which was very distinctive, was found within the upper intermediate gray layers and formed clusters of labeled neurons in many sections. The second tier of calretinin-IR neurons was found in the deep gray layer. However, the second tier was not distinctive compared to the first tier and the labeled neurons did not form any clusters. Calretinin-IR neurons in the intermediate and deep layers varied dramatically in morphology and included vortical fusiform, pyriform, and stellate neurons. Neurons with varicose dendrites were also labeled. Most of the labeled neurons were small to medium in size. Enucleation appeared to have no effect on the distribution of calretinin immunoreactivity in the contralateral intermediate and deep layers of the SC. The results indicate that calretinin is present in various neurons, at different locations. These results should be applicable for better understanding of the functional organization of the SC.

  • The advantage of plasma-sprayed coating is their good resistance against thermal shock due to the porous state of the coated layer with a consequently low Youngs modulus. However, the existence of many pores with a bimodal distribution and a laminar structure in the coating reduces coating strength and oxidation protection of the base metals. In order to counteract these problems, there have been many efforts to obtain dense coatings by spraying under low pressure or vacuum and by controlling particle size and morphology of the spraying materials. The aim of the present study is to survey the effects of the HIP treatment between 1100 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ on plasma-sprayed oxide coating of A1$_2$O$_3$, A1$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$on the metal substrate (type C18N10T stainless steel). These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing. These results show that high-pressure treatment has an advantage for improving adhesive strength and Vickers hardness of plasma-sprayed coatings.

  • In this paper, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles were added between the sheets of prepreg, and the effect of on many properties of BN-embedded carbon fiber reinforced plastics was investigated. The amount of BN particles which corresponds with 0 to 15 wt% of total resin weight was used as an additive material. The tensile strength and the inter-laminar shear strength of BN-embedded CFRP samples were improved by maximally 13.6%, and 6.7%, respectively. The tendency changes of thermal, electrical conductivities and the morphology of cross-section of CFRPs were also observed. This study suggests the possibility of controlling the characteristics of carbon fiber-BN-epoxy composites to use for aerospace applications.
