Acoustic emission signals due to leak from circular holes of 0.4, 1, 2 and 4mm diameter and rectangular slits of different geometry having the same cross section as 4mm diameter hole was studied both analytically and experimentally. Acoustic emission signals from a wide-band type transducer were transformed to digital signals through a digital oscilloscope, and $V_{rms}$ and frequency spectrum were obtained by processing digital signals. Relationships between acoustic parameters and fluid mechanical parameters were derived analytically. A quadrapole aerodynamic model was applied in the analysis of leak from the circular holes and $V_{rms}$ was found to be proportional to the root square of leak rate through the circular hole. A modified model based on dipole source mechanism and laminar equivalent diameter was applied in the analysis of leak signals from the rectangular slits. In the case of constant pressure, $V_{rms}$ increased as the laminar equivalent diameter of slit decreased. In the case of constant laminar equivalent diameter, however the result was similar to that for leak from the circular hole. The frequency spectra of leak signals shows the same frequency characteristics irrespective of the pressure difference.rence.
Laminar burning velocities of propane- and iso-octane-air mixtures have been numerically modelled over a wide range of equivalence ratio, pressure and temperature. These correlations are applicable to the modelling of stratified charged combustion like that of lean bum and GDI engine combustion. The numerical models are based on the results calculated by PREMIX code with Sloane's detailed chemical reaction mechanism for propane and FlameMaster code with Peters' for iso-octane. Laminar burning velocity for two fuels showed a pressure and temperature dependence in the following form, in the range of $0.1{\sim}4MPa$, and $300{\sim}1000K$, respectively. $S_L={\alpha}\;{\exp}[-\xi({\phi}-{\phi}_m)^2-{\exp}\{-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)\}-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)]$ where ${\phi}_m=1.07$, and both of ${\alpha}$ and ${\xi}$ are functions of pressure and temperature. Compared with the results of the existing models, those of the present one showed the good agreement of the recent experiment data, especially in the range of lean and rich sides. Judging from the calculated results of the stratified charged combustion by using STAR-CD, the above modelling prove to be more suitable than the other ones.
In the present study, The characteristics of developing steady laminar flows of a straight duct connected to a $180^{\circ}$ curved duct were examined In the entrance region through experimental measurement. Flow characteristics such as shear stress distributions, pressure distributions and friction coefficient experimentally in a square cross-sectional straight duct by using the PIV system. For the PIV measurement by particles produced from mosquito coils particles. The experimental data were obtained at 9 points dividing the test sections by 400mm. Experimental results can be summarized as follows. Critical Reynolds number, $Re_{cr}$ which indicates transition from laminar steady flow to transition steady flow was 2,150. Shear stress per unit length on the wall was stronger than that in the fully developed flow region. This was attributed to the fact that shear stress and pressure loss in the curvature of a duct were increased. Pressure distributions were gradually decreased irrespective of Reynolds number In the whole test section. This trends were in a good agreement with the reference results. Pipe friction coefficient in the steady state flow region was calculate from method of least squares. The co-relationship between fiction coefficient and Reynolds number was established as follow; ${\lambda}=56/Re$.
The effect of rotation on the unsteady laminar flaw past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. The numerical solutions for the 2D Navier-Stokes equation obtained, using two different numerical methods. One is an accurate spectral method and the other is a finite volume method(FVM). First, the flaw around a stationary circular cylinder is investigated to understand the basic phenomenon of flaw separation and bluff body wake. Next, the flow characteristics of the laminar flow, past a rotating circular cylinder, are investigated, using a FVM developed in this study. By the effect of rotation, it is seen that values of lift increase, while the values of mean drag decrease. Further, the criteria of angular velocity, at which the Karman vorteces disappear, is also determined.
In this paper, the 3D stress state and inter-laminar stresses in a rotating thin laminated cylinder shell are studied. The thickness of the cylinder is supposed to be thin and it is made of laminated composite material and can have general layer stacking. The governing equations of the cylindrical shell are obtained by employing the Layerwise theory (LWT). The effect of rotation is considered as rotational body force which is induced due to the rotation of the cylinder about its axis. The Layerwise theory (LWT), is used to discrete the partial differential equations of the problem to ordinary ones, in terms of the displacements of the mathematical layers. By applying the Free boundary conditions the solution of the governing equations is completed and the stress state, the inter-laminar stresses, and the edge effect in the rotating cylindrical shells are investigated in the numerical results. To verify the results, LWT solution is compared with the results of the FEM solution and good agreements are achieved. The inter-laminar normal and shear stresses in rotating cylinder are studied and effects of layer stacking and angular velocity is investigated in the numerical results.
Three-dimensional formability of the thermoplastic laminar composite was studied according to manufacturing conditions. Five different types of the plain weave fabric were used as reinforcement with PET matrix. The square blank was made by press consolidation technique and formed in the type hemisphere. B-factor defined as the ratio of width of yarn and distance between yarns was used as the factor of formability in the type of plain weave fabric. The formability of PET/Glass fabric laminar composite was estimated in terms of forming rate and B-factor with the thickness distribution, area ratio of blank, and intra-ply shear angle. The thickness distribution across hemisphere was strongly affected by the B-factor, forming rate and blank thickness. The area ratio of blank was increased with B-factor, forming rate and blank thickness. Also, it was found that the intra-ply shear angle depends on the B-factor and forming rate.
A visualization study on the boundary layer and near-wake of an NACA 0012 airfoil was con-ducted in order to investigate the influence of boundary layer behavior on the near-wake at low Reynolds numbers. The present study is investigated at static angles of attack ${\alpha}=0^{\circ},\;3^{\circ},\;6^{\circ}$ and $Re=2.3{\times}10^4,\;3.3{\times}10^4,\;4.8{\times}10^4$ by using a smoke-wire technique. The results of this study show that the laminar boundary layer on the airfoil surface is attached to the surface at ${\alpha}=0^{\circ}$, and that laminar separation of boundary layer on the airfoil surface occurs at ${\alpha}=3^{\circ}$. Furthermore, reattachment of the boundary layer occurs in the case of ${\alpha}=6^{\circ}$. In the current study, the location of the laminar separation point moves upstream as the Reynolds number and the angle of attack increase.
By utilizing a semi-empirical soot model, the applicability of the laminar flamelet concept fur simulating the formation and oxidation of soot in the laminar diffusion flame has been studied. The source terms for two transport equations of the soot formation and oxidation are calculated in the mixture fraction/scalar dissipation rate space for laminar flamelets and stored in a library. In this study, emphasis is given to the interaction associated with radiation and soot formation. The radiative heat loss is obtained by solving the radiative transfer equation using the unstructured grid finite volume method with the WSGGM. The calculated temperatures and soot volume fractions agree relatively well with the experimental data and the previous numerical results of Kaplan et al. using the detailed chemistry.

Heat transfer characteristics in a narrow rectangular channel are experimentally investigated for upward and downward flows. The experimental data obtained are compared with existing data and predictions by many correlations. Based on the observations, there are differences from others: (1) there are no different heat transfer characteristics between upward and downward flows, (2) most of the existing correlations under-estimate heat transfer characteristics, and (3) existing correlations do not predict the high heat transfer in the entrance region for a wide range of Re. In addition, there are a few heat transfer correlations applicable to narrow rectangular channels. Therefore, a new set of correlations is proposed with and without consideration of the entrance region. Without consideration of the entrance region, heat transfer characteristics are expressed as a function of Re and Pr for turbulent flows, and as a function of Gz for laminar flows. The correlation proposed for turbulent and laminar flows has errors of ${\pm}18.25$ and ${\pm}13.62%$, respectively. With consideration of the entrance region, the heat transfer characteristics are expressed as a function of Re, Pr, and $z^*$ for both laminar and turbulent flows. The correlation for turbulent and laminar flows has errors of ${\pm}19.5$ and ${\pm}22.0%$, respectively.
The breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by the impinging and swirl type injectors were studied as increasing the Weber number (or injection condition) and the ambient gas pressure to 4.0.MPa. In the case of impinging type injector. we compared the changes of breakup lengths between laminar and turbulent sheets. which are formed by the impingement of laminar and turbulent jets. respectively. The results showed that both sheets expand as increasing the injection velocity irrespective of the ambient gas density when the gas based Weber number is low. When the Weber number is high, however, the breakup of turbulent sheet depends on the hydraulic force of jets as well as the aerodynamic force of ambient gas which determines the breakup of laminar sheet. Using the experimental results. we could suggest empirical models on the breakup lengths of laminar and turbulent sheets. In the case of swirl type injector. as $We_l$, and ambient gas density increased, the disturbances on the annular liquid sheet surface were amplified by the increase of the aerodynamic forces. and thus the liquid sheet disintegrated near from the injector exit. Finally, the measured breakup length of swirl type injector according to the ambient gas density and $We_l$, was compared with the result by the linear instability theory. We found that the corrected breakup length relation derived from linear instability theory considering the attenuation of sheet thickness agrees well with our experimental results.
