  • Proper ergonomic design of a passenger seat for the highspeed train is one of the essential design components that is directly related to passenger comfort. This study investigated a systematic approach to the ergonomic passenger seat design and evaluation for the Korean highspeed train. To design an ergonomic passenger seat that improves passenger confort, Korean anthropometric data, pas- senger activities in the coach, body postures, body contours and seat dimensions were considered. By analyzing the interredlationship of such factors, resultant seat dimensions were suggested. To properly ecaluate the suggested dimensions, four prototypes were subsequently made and iteratively tested in the laboratory. It is expected that this approach is readily applicable to the passenger seat design of other transport vehicles as well as a train.

  • This paper investigates the methodology to develop a layout of the simulator for measuring and evaluating human sensibility. Since the simulator layout is different from general building layouts in that it is organized in order to communicate systematically between facilities, laboratories to evaluate human sensibility and equipments to support experiments in simulator, two approaches based on eigenvector and cut tree are applied to develop a simulator layout. Qualitative input data (relationship chart. space requirements for each laboratory and equipment) are obtained and transformed into quantitative data. The information obtained by two approaches provides several meaningful clues to generate the simulator layout. The simulator layout is presented based on the obtained information by two approaches. Extracted quantitative data by using eigenvector and cut tree are meaningful of generating the simulator layout.

  • This study reviews several database menu structure for pc communication services to examine the efficiency of database menu structure. Database menu systems of 5 major pc communication companies were analyzed by GOMS methodology, a description of the knowledge that a user must have in order to carry out tasks on system. Also, each database access time of 4 pc communication companies were measured with internet pc environment in laboratory. It is recommened that another menu design strategies (for example, broad-shallow rather than narrow-deep) should be adopted because current menu structures have inefficient procedures to access those database.

  • A laboratory study was performed to evaluate the effects of an aid(i.e. stick) on joint loadings. Six healthy young participants were recruited from Virginia Tech student population. Each participant has performed three normal walking and three stick walking trials. Normalized and integrated, ground reaction forces(GRFs) and joint moments were measured at ankle, knee, and hip joints from kinematic and kinetic data. The result suggests that stick walking significantly reduces vertical ground reaction force and joint moments at ankle and knee compared to normal walking.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the elastic effect of deformation and restriction in wearing a support type panty stocking (PS). The study investigated deformation rate in all surface area, deformation rate in local area, length deformation rate, changes in slip and feeling of restriction under the standard laboratory condition. Two healthy adult females in twenties wore four types of PS. The result were as follows : The deformation rate in all surface area was 117 .approx. 132% in wearing support type PS, 157% in wearing mono type PS, due to the intensities of restriction. The deformation rate in local area was in order, course > oblique > wale direction. The largest deformation rate was observed in hip girth. Between the deformation rates in all surface and local areas was a high correlation acknowledged, especially the course direction showed a high correlation. Support type PSs showed more deformation and changes of slip than wool and mono type PS. Especially, changes of slip at the knee appeared greatly. The responses of restriction evaluated from a paired comparison method were in order, JS 2 > KS 4 > KS 9 > KS 5 > KS 1 > KM 3.

  • This paper discusses the next direction for user experience design to keep pace with an ongoing IT paradigm shift, particularly focused on UX standardization activity contributing to reinforcement of brand power and customer loyalty. The paper introduces a model that identifies four levels of UX standardization and a key concept called "sustainable UX ecosystem" as its top level. It argues that in the new IT paradigm the fourth level of UX standardization, the sustainable UX ecosystem, is the next direction user experience must head towards.

  • This study is to define a congitive paradigm including a new model of common cause human behavior error domain and to analyze their causal factors and their properties of common cause human error characteristics in software engineering. A laboratory study was performed to analyze the common causes of human behavior domain error in software development and to identify software design factors contributing to the common cause effects in common cause failure redundancy. The results and analytical paradigm developed in this research can be applied to reliabbility improvement and cost reduction in software development for many applications. Results are also expected to provide training guidelines for software engineers and for more effective design of ultra-high reliable software packages.

  • To investigate the difference of sweating reaction by the somato types, we measured total sweat rate, local sweat rate, skin temperature, physiological reaction and psychological reaction at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ under laboratory conditons. Nine healthy adult females were divided into three somato types : slender (3), normal (3) and obese (3). The results were as follows ; Total sweat rate was highest in the obese type, followed by the normal and slender types in order. Local sweat rate was highest in the infrascapular area, and then came breast, the back of the hand, upper ann, anterior leg, and anterior thigh in all somato types. Mean skin temperature was highest in the slender type, and followed the normal and obese types. Rectal temperature, blood pressure and pulse rate were highest in the obese type. Psychological reaction appeared 'hot', 'humid', 'sweaty' as ambient temperature went up. Somato types made little difference in psychological reaction.

  • Our recent work on virtual environments and virtual displays is reviewed, including our efforts to establish the Virtual Environment Research, Interactive Technology, And Simulation (VERITAS) facility and our research on spatial hearing. VERITAS is a state-of -the-art multisensory facility, built around the ${CAVE}^{TM}$ technology. High-quality 3D audio is included and haptic interfaces are planned. The facility will support technical and non-technical users working in a wide variety of application areas. Our own research emphasizes the importance of auditory stimulation in virtual environments and complex display systems. Experiments on auditory-aided visual target acquistion, sensory conflict, sound localization in noise, and loxalization of speech stimuli are discussed.

  • Daily exposure to constrained body postures and deviations from neutral postures over a long period may result in discomfort as well as pains and aches in the muscles, joints, tendons, and other soft tissues. Furthermore, it was known that poor body postures are a major cause of musculoskeletal disorders in industry. Therefore, in this study, comfort ranges of joint motions were obtained as a criterion for evaluating body postures and designing workplaces ergonomically, which were bases on subjects' perceived discomfort level estimated by magnitude estimation. Nineteen healthy male subjects participated in the laboratory study. They results showed that comfort ranges of joint motions occurred in the wrist, elbow, neck, and ankle were little less than their normal range of joint motions, but those in the back(L5/S1) and hip joint were much less than their normal ones. This fact implies that the back and jip movements are more stressful than the other joints movements. It is expected that comfort ranges of joint motions can be used as a valuable guideline when designing and evaluating workplaces.
