Study on Soil Parameters and Two Dimensional Analysis in Slope Stability (사면안정 2차원해석과 토질정수에 관한 연구)

  • Earthen mass located beneth a sloping group surface, whether natural or manmade, have a tendency to move downward and outward under the influence of gravity. Unless this tendency is suitably counteracted by the Shearing resistances within the mass, a landslide occurs. Avoiding such instabilities is a major concern of the geotechnical engineer. The shearing behavior of a soil is determined empirically, i.e., by field tests or laboratory tests. This results are applied to the slope stability analysis. The factor of safety for slope stability analysis is much more sensitive to the choice of strength parameters as interpreted from soil tests than to the choice of the computational method of analysis. This paper was investigated the influence of the change in the factor of safety due to a change in one of the parameters, relative to the total change in the factor of safety due to change in all parameters. A conclusion may be reached with respect to the required precision definition of the different variables to limit uncertainties in the factor of safety to tolerable levels.

  • A method for automatically driving paddy vehicles, such as rice transplanters, etc., straight ahead in a paddy field was investigated . The direction of such vehicles must be precisely controlled to do the operations as straight. However, the alignment of the from wheels becomes distorted due to the unevenness of the ground, preventing the vehicle form going straight. If the proper alignment of the front wheels is maintained , the vehicle can be driven straight ahead greater precision. To investigate the influence of the ground uneveness, the behavior of a paddy vehicle running over an obstacle was quantified. The left wheel ran over an obstacle on a flat concrete road surfaced. When the steering wheel was free, the front wheels were forced toward the left when vehicle went up the obstacle and toward the right when the vehicle went down it. The torsion of the wheel when the vehicle went down the obstacle was larger than that when it went up ,so it turned right 5 degrees. Sinc hydraulic control steering decreased the steering angle , it turned right 3 degrees. These results suggest that a vehicle can be driven straight ahead with high precision when the steering angle is changed in response to the direction and inclination of the vehicle . Such results were obtained in a paddy field tests.

Uplift Capacity Estimation of Bond-type Rock Anchors Based on Full Scale Field Tests (실규모 현장시험을 통한 부착형 암반앵커의 인발저항력 평가)

  • This paper presents the results of full-scale uplift load tests performed on 24 passive anchors grouted to various lengths at Okchun and Changnyong site. Rock anchors were installed over a wide range of rock types and qualities with a fixed anchored depth of 1~6 m. The majority of installations used D51 mm high grade steel rebar to induce rock failure prior to rod failure. However, a few installations included the use of D32 mm rebar at relatively deeper anchored depth so as to induce rod failure. In many tests, rock failure was reached and the ultimate loads were recorded along with observations of the shape and extent of the failure surface. In addition to field tests, laboratory pullout tests were conducted to determine bond strength and bond stress-shear slip relation at the tendon/grout interface when a corrosion protection sheath is installed in the cement-based grout. The test results show that the ultimate tendon-grout bond strength is measured from 18~25% of unconfined compressive strength of grout. One of the important results from these tests is that the measured strains along the corrosion protection sheath were so small that practically the reduction of bond strength by the presence of sheath would be negligible.

Determination of Undrained Shear Strength In Clay from Cone Pressuremeter Test (Cone Pressuremeter를 이용한 점성토의 전단 강도 산정)

  • The cone pressuremeter test (CPM) is a new in-situ test which combines a standard cone penetration test with a pressuremeter. The cone pressuremeter tests in clay are presented and analyzed. An analytical solution of CPM incorporated non-linear soil behavior with no volume change is presented, and curve fitting technique is proposed to make use of both the loading and unloading portions of the pressuremeter test. The proposed method is accomplished by putting greater emphasis on the unloading portion. Twenty CPM tests are analyzed using the proposed method, and the derived undrained shear strength of soil is compared with other tests such as field vane tests and laboratory tests. The interpreted soil parameters had resonable values when compared to other in-situ and laboratory test results. The cone pressuremeter has provided reliable measures of undrained shear strength using curve fitting method.

  • This paper suggests a computer-based on-line measurement method of tan$\delta$ and capacitance for HV capacitor. The method employs V-I technique using scaled down analog voltage and current signal obtained by digital oscilloscope. The measurement results are displayed by graphic user interface with graphic language. Field tests were tarried out at 6.6kV testing voltage in Samhwa Capacitor company.

Fundamental Study on Establishing the Subgrade Compaction Control Criteria of DCPT with Laboratory Test and In-situ Tests (실내 및 현장실험를 통한 DCPT의 노상토 다짐관리기준 정립에 관한 기초연구)

  • In this study, in-situ testing method, Dynamic Cone Penetration Test(DCPT) was presented to establish a new compaction control criteria with using mechanical property like elastic modulus instead of unit weight for field compaction control. Soil chamber tests and in-situ tests were carried out to confirm DCPT tests can predict the designed elastic modulus after field compaction, and correlation analysis among the DCPT, CBR and resilient modulus of sub grade were performed. Also, DCPT test spacing criteria in the construction site was proposed from the literature review. In the result of laboratory tests, Livneh's equation was the best in correlation between PR of DCPT and CBR, George and Pradesh's equation was the best in the predicted resilient modulus. In the resilient modulus using FWD, Gudishala's equation estimates little larger than predicted resilient modulus and Chen's equation estimates little smaller. And KICT's equation estimates the modulus smaller than predicted resilient modulus. But using the results of laboratory resilient modulus tests considering the deviatoric and confining stress from the moving vehicle, the KICT's equation was the best. In the results of In-situ DCPT tests, the variation of PR can occur according to size distribution of penetrate points. So DCPT test spacing was proposed to reduce the difference of PR. Also it was shows that average PR was different according to subgrade materials although the subgrade was satisfied the degree of compaction. Especially large sized materials show smaller PR, and it is also found that field water contents have influence a lot of degree of compaction but a little on the average PR of the DCPT tests.

Investigation into Weathering Degree and Shear Wave Velocity for Decomposed Granite in Hongsung (홍성 지역 화강 풍화 지층에 대한 풍화도 및 전단파 속도 고찰)

  • The weathering degree and shear wave velocity, $V_S$, were evaluated for decomposed granite layers in Hongsung, where earthquake damages have occurred. The subsurface geological layers and their $V_S$ profiles were determined, respectively, from boring investigations and seismic tests such as crosshole, downhole and SASW tests. The subsurface layers were composed of 10 to 40 m thickness of weathered residual soil and weathered rock in most sites. In the laboratory, the weathering indexes with depth were estimated based on the results of X-ray fluorescence analysis using samples obtained from field, together with the dynamic soil properties determined from resonant column tests using reconstituted specimens. According to the results, it was examined that most weathering degrees represented such as VR, Li, CIA, MWPI and WIP were decreased with increasing depth with exception of RR and CWI. For weathered residual soils in Hongsung, the $V_S's$ determined from borehole seismic tests were slightly increased with increasing depth, and were similar to those from resonant column tests. Furthermore, the $V_S$ values were independent on the weathering degrees, which were decreased with depth.

Study on bearing capacity of combined confined concrete arch in large-section tunnel

  • There are many challenges in the construction of large-section tunnels, such as extremely soft rock and fractured zones. In order to solve these problems, the confined concrete support technology is proposed to control the surrounding rocks. The large-scale laboratory test is carried out to clarify mechanical behaviours of the combined confined concrete and traditional I-steel arches. The test results show that the bearing capacity of combined confined concrete arch is 3217.5 kN, which is 3.12 times that of the combined I-steel arch. The optimum design method is proposed to select reasonable design parameters for confined concrete arch. The parametric finite element (FE) analysis is carried out to study the effect of the design factors via optimum design method. The steel pipe wall thickness and the longitudinal connection ring spacing have a significant effect on the bearing capacity of the combined confined concrete arch. Based on the above research, the confined concrete support technology is applied on site. The field monitoring results shows that the arch has an excellent control effect on the surrounding rock deformation. The results of this research provide a reference for the support design of surrounding rocks in large-section tunnels.

A Study on the Application of Bamboo Soil Nailing System through Experimental Construction (현장 시험시공을 통한 대나무 쏘일네일링공법의 적용성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology using bamboo is developed. And field tests were performed to confirm applicability of bamboo soil nailing system. For the practical use of bamboo soil nailing system, laboratory tests, field instrumentations and pullout tests were also performed to investigate the applicability. The results of field measurement through field tests were compared with the results of numerical analyses for verifying the field construction. As a result, the results of comparing with the field measurement and numerical analyses shows the similar behavior characteristics. Based on this study, applicability for bamboo soil nailing systems were confirmed for the case of comparatively low scale nailed-soil excavation wall. And it is expected that the bamboo soil nailing system can be used as satisfactory reinforcement technique taking the place of existing steel reinforcement soil nailing system. Hereafter, it needed the research for the applicability for the various types of excavation condition, also the active practical application of bamboo soil nailing system is needed.

Comparison of Coefficient of Consolidation and Prediction of Excess Pore Water Pressure of Agricultural Reservoir under Embankment on Soft Ground (연약지반상에 축조된 농업용저수지의 과잉공극수압 예측과 압밀계수의 비교)

  • This study was carried out to comparison of coefficient of consolidation and the prediction of excess pore water pressure in agricultural reservoir on soft clay ground. For the purpose of verification of the proposed equation, laboratory model tests and field tests were performed and excess pore water pressure was compared to those predicted with the Terzaghi's method. The predicted excess pore water pressure according to ponding was very applicable to practice because it was close to the observed data. Also, for the comparison of coefficient of consolidation, the oedometer, constant rate of strain (CRS), and Rowe cell tests were performed. The coefficient of consolidation at the Rowe cell and CRS tests showed a greate increase than in the oedometer test. The ratio of the vertical and horizontal coefficient of consolidation showed a large difference according to various tests method and mixing ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that careful attention should be paid to predicting the required consolidation period in agricultural reservoir.
