The aim of this study was to evaluate the photodynamic effect of various photosensitizing agents against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA was exposed to light from a 632 urn diode laser (15 J/$cm^2$) in the presence of various photosensitizer, such as photofrin, photogem, radachlorine and ALA. In vivo study was performed using ICR mice. Twenty eight mice had a standard wound ($100\;mm^2$) created on the dorsum, and MRSA was inoculated into the wound region. The four groups were classified as follows: (1) the untreated control group (bacteria alone), (2) the bacteria plus light group (15 J/$cm^2$), (3) the bacteria plus photofrin group (kept in the dark), and (4) the photodynamic therapy (PDT) group (bacteria, photofrin, and light). After photofrin (dose 1 mg/kg) injection, the experimental group was irradiated with 632 urn diode laser (15 J/$cm^2$) for 30 minutes after In vitro results of PDT showed the complete killing of MRSA at the photofrin, radachlorine, and photogem However, ALA-PDT was ineffective on MRSA viability. In vivo results showed that photofrin has therapeutic effect on the wound infection. These results demonstrate that selective lethal photosensitization of MRSA can be achieved using phofrin, photogem and radachlorin. Thus, PDT can inactivate MRSA survival.
This work is focused on the definition and the analysis of both complete and incomplete similitudes for the dynamic responses of thin shells. Previous numerical and experimental investigations on both structural and structural-acoustic systems motivated this further analysis, mainly centred on the incomplete (distorted) similitudes. These similitudes and the associated scaling laws are defined by using the classical modal approach (CMA) and by invoking also the Energy Distribution Approach (EDA) in order to take into account both the cinematic and energetic items. The whole procedure is named SAMSARA: Similitude and Asymptotic Models for Structural-Acoustic Research and Applications. A brief summary of the procedure is herein given and the attention is paid to the analytical models of thin stiffened and unstiffened cylindrical shells. By using the well-known smeared model, the stiffened cylinder equations are used as general framework to analyse the possibility to define exact (replicas) or distorted similitudes (avatars). Despite the extreme simplicity of the proposed models, the results are really encouraging. The final aim is to define equivalent models to be used in laboratory measurements.

The aim of this work is to investigate and study the quantum effects in the modeling of nanoscale symmetric double-gate InAlAs/InGaAs/InP HEMT (High Electron Mobility Transistor). In order to do so, the carrier concentration in InGaAs channel at gate lengths ($L_g$) 100 nm and 50 nm, are modelled by a density gradient model or quantum moments model. The simulated results obtained from the quantum moments model are compared with the available experimental results to show the accuracy and also with a semi-classical model to show the need for quantum modeling. Quantum modeling shows major variation in electron concentration profiles and affects the device characteristics. The two triangular quantum wells predicted by the semi-classical model seem to vanish in the quantum model as bulk inversion takes place. The quantum effects thus become essential to incorporate in nanoscale heterostructure device modeling.
The aim of the present study is to investigate central nervous system (CNS) activity of the methanol extracts of leaves of Caesalpinia bonducella (MECB) and stem bark of Bauhinia racemosa (MEBR) (Caesalpinaceae) in Swiss albino mice and Wistar albino rats. General behavior, exploratory behavior, muscle relaxant activity and phenobarbitone sodium-induced sleeping time were studied. The results revealed that the methanol extracts of leaves of Caesalpinia bonducella at 100 - 200 mg/kg and stem bark of Bauhinia racemosa 100 - 200 mg/kg caused a significant reduction in the spontaneous activity (general behavioral profile), remarkable decrease in exploratory behavioral pattern (Y-maze and head dip test), a reduction in muscle relaxant activity (rotarod and traction tests), and also significantly potentiated phenobarbitone sodium-induced sleeping time. The results suggest that MECB and MEBR exhibit CNS depressant activity in tested animal models.
The planning of any experiment or trial involving the use of animal (material) requires the most detailed and careful consideration of the wide variety of species and strains that are now available. Unfortunately, although many research workers carefully define their requirements with respect to chemicals or complicated laboratory equipment, often they appear to be unaware of the specifications that should be similarly applied to laboratory animals and end up simply asking for a white mouse! The aim of any user of laboratory animals should be to achieve maximum accuracy with the minimum number of animals, and it is, therefore, essential that careful consideration should be given to the choice of the animal(Bleby J, 1987). The first step when selecting an experimental animal is to specify the type needed, taking into account the following factors: 1. species, 2. breed or strain, and 3. quality, especially with respect to health and genetical status. The correct choice of species cannot be emphasized too strongly and failure to do so can sometimes have dire consequences, frequently very expensive in financial terms and sometimes extremely tragic in manifestations of human and animal suffering. In this paper, we reorganized a lot of collected articles described previously for common and scientific names of amphibians, domestic animals, birds, invertebrates, mammals, reptiles, and aquaculture as mentioned in the text.
In this work, nonlinear control of a three-phase shunt active power filter (SAPF) has been studied and compared to classical control based on proportional integral regulator. The control strategy is based on the direct current method using sliding mode control (SMC), where the aim is to regulate the average voltage across the dc bus of the inverter. Details are given for the control algorithm; the controller is comprised of a current loop which utilizes a hysteresis controller to generate the gating signals for the switching devices, and a nonlinear controller based on SMC law which is different from classical laws based on error between reference and measured output voltage of the inverter. Sliding surface applied in this work contains the whole of state variables, in order to ensure full control of the system behavior in the presence of disturbances that affect the supply source, the load parameters or the reference value. The designed controller offers advantage that it can gives the improvement of dynamic and static performances in cases of large disturbances. A comparison of the effects of PI control and SMC on the APF response in steady stat, under line variations, load variations, and different component variations is performed.
Kou Woan Lao is an oriental-style dairy product, which is coagulated by milk-clotting enzyme from the culture filtrate of lao-chao. The product appears smooth, sweet, slightly wine flavour, and the flavour differs from yogurt. The aim of this study was to search for the optimum model to shorten the period of manufacture, and to improve the quality of Kou Woan Lao. A response surface design was used for studying the effects of addition of carrageenan, locust bean gum, and culture filtrate from lao-chao on the curd firmness, viscosity, and syneresis. Results indicated that the best rheological property, preservative quality and acceptability of Kou Woan Lao could be obtained by the combination of 0.22% carrageenan, 0.21 % locust bean gum and 12% culture filtrate from lao-chao. The curd firmness, viscosity and syneresis of resultant product were 29.3 g, 21,347.7 cps, and 8.92%, respectively and the microstructure of the curd revealed a relatively complete three-dimensional spider web-like structure.

Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is an essential process in the production of integrated circuits containing copper interconnects. The effect of alanine in reactive slurries representative of those that might be used in copper CMP was studied with the aim of improving selectivity between copper(Cu) film and tantalum-nitride(TaN) film. We investigated the pH effect of nano-colloidal silica slurry containing alanine through the chemical mechanical polishing test for the 8(inch) blanket wafers as deposited Cu and TaN film, respectively. The copper and tantalum-nitride removal rate decreased with the increase of pH and reaches the neutral at pH 7, then, with the further increase of pH to alkaline, the removal rate rise to increase soddenly. It was found that alkaline slurry has a higher removal rate than acidic and neutral slurries for copper film, but the removal rate of tantalum-nitride does not change much. These tests indicated that alanine may improve the CMP process by controlling the selectivity between Cu and TaN film.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the photosensitizer photogem with light-emitting diode (LED) on vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). Two VRE strains isolated from the feces of patients. that was identificated Enterococcus faecium (vanA) and Enterococcus gallinarum (vanC1) using traditional biochemical tests and confirmed VRE genotyping from using polymerase chain reaction. In addition, three strains were used Enterococcus. faecalis CDC-286 (vanA), E. faecalis CDC-583 (vanB) and E. gallinarum CDC-42 (vanC1). To examine the antimicrobial effect of photogem mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) against, CFU quantification and Disk diffusion antimicrobial susceptibility test were evaluated. The effects of Photodynamic therapy was not associated with genotype. Photogem mediated PDT perfectly inhibited the colony formation of E. faecalis CDC-286. The number of viable bacteria decreased greatly after PDT application with photogem $50{\mu}g/mL$ and energy density of $15J/cm^2$. The diameter of inhibition zone was increased to after PDT more than before PDT. The case of vancomycin disc on E. faecalis CDC-583 and E. galinanum-Patient were changed from resistant to intermediate resistant, from intermediate resistant to susceptable. These results demonstrate that lethal photosensitization of VRE can be achieved using photogem plus 630 nm LED irradiation.
Blood glucose curves in the management for diabetic patients have several limitations including intermittent assessment of blood glucose concentration, hospitalization, patient restraint, and repeated phlebotomy. The aim of this study was to apply and evaluate a wireless continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) in healthy dogs. Subcutaneous interstitial glucose concentrations in 7 dogs were continuously monitored and recorded by wireless CGMS. During induced hyperglycemia, the interstitial glucose concentrations were compared with whole blood glucose concentrations measured by glucometer and serum glucose concentrations measured by automated chemistry analyzer, respectively. There were no significant differences among interstitial, whole blood and serum glucose concentrations. The interstitial glucose concentrations had a good correlation to serum glucose concentrations. The real-time wireless CGMS is a valuable tool for monitoring system of glucose concentrations in dogs. Use of the CGMS for diabetic patients will provide accurate information over traditional blood glucose curves.
