Korean Female Adolescents' Food Attitudes and Food Intake Relative to the Korean Food Tower (I) : Food Intake

  • A survey was conducted to examine the food intake of 285 Korean female students attending a secondary school in Seoul. Food intake was assessed using a food frequency based on the Korean Food Tower which consists of five food groups, i.e., grain products, vegetables and fruits, meat, milk, and fats and sweets. To describe food intake descriptive statistics were obtained using SPSS. The food frequency analysis indicated that the participants ate rice, cabbage kimchi, radish, and soybean/red pepper paste most frequently along with milk, ice cream, tea, and seasonal fruits such as citrus fruits, apples, watermelon, and grapes for snacks. Distributions of the total standardized serving frequency for each food group indicated that approximately 84, 83, 45, 60, and 34%, respectively, of the respondents met the recommended serving frequency for grain products, vegetables and fruits, meat, milk, and fats and sweets groups(mean servings per day 5.5, 10.6, 5.5, 2.1, 3.5). Income was the only demographic factor that affected food intake, particularly with respect to meat, milk, and fats and sweets(p < .01).   • The food attitudes of 285 Korean female students attending a secondary school in Seoul were examined with respect to the 5 food groups of the Korean Food Tower : grain products, vegetables and fruits, meat, milk, and fats and sweets. An instrument with 22 items was utilized to measure food attitudes toward the five food groups. The items were categorized into five factors through factor analysis to obtain a description of the participants' food attitudes. The five factors are conscious choice of food, health concerns, economics and time influence, interest in foods, and foods that energize. Several facts emerged from examining the food attitudes. The most evident was their response to the items concerning the influence of economics and time on food choice, which the majority consider not limiting their food consumption. Most participants gave favorable responses for vegetables and fruits on all the five factors, but gave unfavorable responses for meat group and fats and sweets in health concerns. They also gave favorable responses for“foods that energize”for all except fats and sweets. Four of the total 25 relationships among food intake (five groups) and food attitudes (five factors) were found to have significant positive correlations (p < .01).   • The purpose of this study is to consider ontology theory and get to forge design and implementation of ontology-based access system which is support to the nutrition and food guide tower of Home Economics textbooks in middle school in order to offer the way of effective learning performance. It offers a model by establishing a nutrition and food guide tower access system based on Protege-2000 framework. This system is on the basis of XML, and it makes possible to work with semantic web, a next generation internet technology, and provides a meaning structure that can be shared in the field of nutrition in order to build up the fundament of knowledge an information system for the mutual operations. A learner can systemize the knowledge through a self-information access and an instructor can also check out the degree of learner's learning-accomplishment and interests, directly putting the access system into the teaching and learning process. In addition, it is supposed that the learner can maintain a balance and healthy life by internalizing his or her knowledge throughout ontology not only in a teaching and learning process but also in a daily life.

Study on the Purification of 5'-Ribonucleotide (5'-Ribonucleotide의 분리(分離) 정제(精製)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The purification of 5'-riboncleotide using ion exchange resins has been studied and the optimum conditions were determined. The amount used of Amberlite IR120 ion exchange resin in 2nd resin tower could be reduced up to 20% by pretreating the hydrolyzed RNA solution in 1st resin tower. The amount used of regenerant could be also reduced up to 20% by desalting the hydrolyzed RNA solution in the 1st tower, because the desalted solution eluted easily by the water in the 2nd tower. The crystal obtained in this experiment was the mixed-crystals of $5'-IMP.Na_2\;and\;5'-GMP.Na_2$. The crystallization of the complexes formed from $5'-IMP.Na_2\;and\;5'-GMP.Na_2$ gave the best result at pH 7.6. The yield of crystal complexes formed from $5'-IMP.Na_2\;and\;5'-GMP.Na_2$ was obtained higher in high MeOH concentration. However, in higher than 60% MeOH concentration the products was amorphous. The higher content of MeOH for the crystallization of the product gave the smaller value of $5'-IMP.Na_{2}/5'-GMP.Na_2$.

Selection of low toxic insecticides for phytoseiid predatory mites, Amblyseius cucumeris and Amblyseius fallacis (Amblyseius cucumeris 및 Amblyseius fallacis에 대한 저독성약제 선발)

  • This study was conducted to select low toxic insecticides against natural enemies, and to evaluate resistance stability and cross-resistance to resistance strain for the fulfillment of integrated pest management development. Toxicity of imidacloprid and spinosad to Amblyseius cucumeris was relatively low regardless of the adopting test methods. In addition, those to the Amblyseius fallacis was also low by slide dipping method. The slide dipping method was useful to eliminate repellency effect by mites to the tested insecticides. Mortality of A. fallacis to deltamethrin recorded in 1994 and 1999 was 21.6% and 7.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, the permethrin-resistanct strain of A. fallacis was maintained its resistance to deltamethrin. However, the cross-resistance to the newly introduced insecticides namely imidacloprid, fipronil, chlorfenapyr, abamectin, and spinosad. was relatively low.

Changes of Basic Food Groups accoriding to the Revision of Korea RDAs (한국인 영양 권장량의 개정에 따른 기초식품군의 변화)

  • Due to the continuous change of socio-economic circumstances and dietary pattern, the need to change recommended dietary allowances and the basic food groups has been required. Consequently, there have been six revisions of the Korea RDAs, the national recommanded dietary allowances. I reviewed the six sequences of revisions concerning the basic food groups. Up to the fifth revision, the ranks of the basic food groups were based upon the dietary needs of the people of the perspective era. However, in the sixth revision, there was no rank associated with the food groups, but the food groups were portrayed in a food composition tower that explained their importance and their necessary consumption amounts. I could indirectly observe the dietary pattern of each era by analyzing the basic food groups and the representative foods of each food group. I also studied information of pictorial representations of the basic food groups and compared the items of the representative foods with nutrient analysis table. By observing nutrient analysis table, I analyzed whether the clarified representative foods of the basic food groups are indeed foods that were eaten frequently by people daily.

  • The performance of educational program for preventive nutrition is more beneficial for children than for the adults based on the cost reduction and the effect of this education. Also children's education helps them to grow and to live as a healthy adult. The purpose of this study is to solve the nutritional problem in children by developing nutrition education program for children and correct their nutritional problems. The characteristics of this program (www.food79.net) are the customized program for grade level based on the level of learning ability, the various education method such as game, cooking practice, and quiz, animation, and the self educated method by managing children's meal management as the result. The contents of this site are constructed not only for children but also for parents, the teachers and the school dietitians to increasing educational effect. The children room consists of food tower, nutrition kingdom, calculation of obesity index, food information, nutrient exploration, cooking world, and evaluation of dietary life. In the room for dietitian and teachers include the contents of the easy gymnastics, nutrition counseling methods, the teaching plans for nutrition education, and the information interchange corner. The third room for parents is constructed of nutrition evaluation, food 114, correction of living habits, and free discussion. Through this site, we are expecting to contribute to national health promotion by correcting the food habits of children.

  • Naehanyuchae and Youngsanyuchae were originated from the cross between "Erra(female)" and "Tower(male)". The cultivars were made at Bioenergy Crop Research Center, National Institute of crop science, Rural Development Administration, Korea in order to develop the high cold tolerant and yielding rapeseed variety with non-erucic acid and non-glucosinolate as good seed quality indicator. The superiorities of these varieties have been shown through the regional performance trials and demonstration farmers fields. Naehanyuchae and Youngsanyuchae had good agronomic characteristics related to yield potential such as many valuable branches and pods, and long pod length. The seeds of these new varieties composed of the 80% of oleic acid and linoleic acid without erucic acid, and glucosinolate was not extracted in the oil cake. The average grain yields increased by the from 16% to 22% according to the regional performance trials compared to check variety.
