  • In this study, the flow field, spray structure, and combustion process were investigated in a direct injection diesel engine having an offset bowl in a combustion chamber. The KIVA-3V code was used in this study. In order to obtain accurate results, a droplet atomization model, wall impingement model, and ignition delay concept were added to KIVA-3V code. The results showed that the offset bowl engine had a large vortex flow. The direction of this flow counteracted to the direction of fuel injection in one side of combustion chamber. It decreased local turbulent kinetic energy and eventually nonuniform combustion was resulted in an offset bowl engine. In comparison with a center bowl engine case, the peak cylinder pressure was decreased about 6%. Finally , the effect of swirl on combustion was investigated in an offset bowl engine . As the became stronger, the nouniform characteristics in combustion were increased.

  • A multidimensional simulation of turbulent flow and combustion with swirl in the cylinder of SI engine is implemented to clarify the effects of swirl. present simulation employs the ICED-ALE numerical technique, the skew-upwind difference scheme, a modified k_.epsilon. turbulence model, a combustion model of Arrhenius type and turbulence-mixing-control type. First, the calculations for swirling flow in an axisymmetric cylinder are carried out. The results are compared with the experimental data to validate the numerical analysis. Second, the calculations for intake, compression and combustion processes in an axisymmetric cylinder are performed. The effects of swirl on turbulent flow and combustion are examined through the parametric study of swirl number 0.0, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4. As a result, it is numerically shown that the turbulent kinetic energy and the swirl velocity, which are produced during the intake process, affect the combustion process.

  • The present study conducts experimental investigation on spreading and deposition characteristics of a $4.3{\mu}l$ de-ionized (DI) water droplet impacting upon aluminum (Al 6061) flat and textured surfaces. The micro-textured surface consisted the micro-hole arrays (hole diameter: $125{\mu}m$, hole depth: $125{\mu}m$) fabricated by the conventional micro-computer numerical control (${\mu}$-CNC) milling machine process. We examined the surface effect of texture area fraction ${\varphi}_s$ ranging from 0 to 0.57 and impact velocity of droplet ranging from 0.40 m/s to 1.45 m/s on spreading and deposition characteristics from captured images. We used a high-speed camera to capture sequential images for investigate spreading characteristics and the image sensor to capture image of final equilibrium deposition droplet for analyze spreading diameter and contact angle. We found that the deposition droplet on textured surfaces have different wetting states. When the impact velocity is low, the non-wetting state partially exists, whereas over 0.64 m/s of impact velocity, totally wetting state is more prominent due to the increase kinetic energy of impinging droplet.
