  • Leptogium (Ach.) Gray is distributed throughout South Korea; however, for nearly two decades no detailed taxonomic or revisionary research on this lichen genus has been conducted. This study examined the specimens deposited in the lichen herbarium at the Korean Lichen Research Institute, and samples were identified using descriptions recently published in the scientific literature. In this revisionary study, a total of fourteen species of Leptogium were documented, including new records of Leptogium delavayi Hue, Leptogium denticulatum Nyl., and Leptogium trichophoroides P. M. J${\o}$rg. & A. K. Wallace. Detailed descriptions of each species are given, including their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics. A key to all Leptogium species known to occur in South Korea is also presented.

  • Two species of the lichen genus Dirinaria (Tuck.) Clem. are recognized in the South Korean lichen mycota, viz: D. applanata and D. picta. Descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics together with molecular analysis and a key to known Dirinaria species are presented. D. picta is recorded from South Korea for the first time.

  • Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and catalase (CAT) play crucial roles in balancing the production and decomposition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in living organisms. These enzymes act cooperatively and synergistically to scavenge ROS. In order to imitate the synergism of these enzymes, we designed and synthesized a novel 32-mer peptide (32P) on the basis of the previous 15-mer peptide with GPX activity and a 17-mer peptide with SOD activity. Upon the selenation and chelation of copper, the 32-mer peptide was converted to a new Se- and Cu-containing 32-mer peptide (Se-Cu-32P) that displayed both SOD and GPX activities, and its kinetics was studied. Moreover, the novel peptide was demonstrated to be able to better protect vero cells from the injury induced by the xanthine oxidase (XOD)/xanthine/$Fe^{2+}$ damage system than its parents. Thus, this bifunctional enzyme imitated the synergism of SOD and GPX and could be a better candidate of therapeutic medicine.

  • The South Korean species of family Proctotrupidae Latreille, 1802 (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupoidea) are studied. Here, seven proctotrupid species are newly added in the South Korean fauna: Cryptoserphus aculeator (Haliday), Disogmus basalis (Thomson), Mischoserphus arcuator (Stelfox), M. samurai (Pschorn-Walcher), Nothoserphus scymni (Ashmead), Proctotrupes gravidator (Linnaeus), and Tretoserphus laricis (Haliday). Which of them, four genera belonging to the tribes Cryptoserphini and Proctotrupini (Cryptoserphus, Mischoserphus, Proctotrupes, and Tretoserphus) are also newly recorded from South Korea. A key to genera of South Korean Proctotrupidae, diagnosis, photographs, distribution, and recorded hosts for each species are presented. All proctotrupid specimens were kept in the collections of the Geolim Entomological Institute, Daegu, South Korea.

  • As one of the serial faunistic studies on the brackish cyclopoids from Korea, taxonomic accounts of three species of Halicyclops from various brackish waters in South Korea are provided, with detailed illustrations of them: H. uncus Ueda and Nagai, 2009, H. setiformis Ueda and Nagai, 2012, and H. itohi Ueda and Nagai, 2012. Halicyclops uncus is newly recorded from Korea, and the latter two species are corrected from H. sinensis sensu Chang, 2009 and H. cf. rotundipes sensu Chang, 2009, respectively. As a result, a total of seven species of the genus are now recognized in Korea, and a revised key to the species is presented.

  • Two newly recorded carnivorous amphipod species, Anonyx gurjanovai Steele, 1986 and A. nugax (Phipps, 1774) belonging to the family Uristidae Hurley, 1963, were collected from the East Sea, Korea. Anonyx gurjanovai is included in the A. laticoxae group and is characterized by a concave palm of the propodus in gnathopod 1 and small posteroventral projection at epimeron 3. The other species, A. nugax, represents the A. nugax group and is distinguished from congeneric species based on the presence of a shorter and less acute projection on epimeron 3. There are 13 species of the A. nugax group recorded worldwide, but this is the first report on the presence of the A. nugax group in Korean waters. Previously, three species of the genus Anonyx had been reported in Korea, and through this study, we have added two newly recorded species. Both the newly recorded Anonyx species are illustrated and compared with the related species. A key to the Anonyx species in Korea is also provided.
