Applying the Flipped Learning Model to an English-Medium Nursing Course

  • Purpose: An emerging trend in Asian higher education is English-medium instruction (EMI), which uses English as the primary instructional language. EMI prepares domestic students for international leadership; however, students report difficulty in learning, and educators have raised questions concerning the effectiveness of EMI. The flipped learning model (FLM), in which lecture and homework activities for a course are reversed, was applied to an English-medium course offered by a college of nursing in Korea. The aims of this study were to: 1) revise an existing English-medium nursing course using the FLM; 2) explore students' learning experiences and their acceptance of the FLM; and 3) identify key factors in the success of FLM. Methods: We used a descriptive, cross-sectional, mixed-methods design and the participants were students at one nursing school in Korea. A series of course development meetings with faculties from the nursing school and the center for teaching and learning were used to develop the course format and content. We conducted course evaluations using the Flipped Course Evaluation Questionnaire with open-ended questions and focus group interviews. Results: Students (N=75) in a 15-week nursing course responded to a survey after completing the course. Among them, seven students participated in one of two focus groups. Overall, students accepted and favored the flipped learning strategy, and indicated that the method enhanced lecture content and their understanding of it. Factors associated with effective instruction included structured monitoring systems and motivational environments. Conclusion: The FLM requires sufficient preparation to facilitate student motivation and maximize learning outcomes.

Developmental procedures for the clinical practice guidelines for conscious sedation in dentistry for the Korean Academy of Dental Sciences

  • Background: Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are defined as "statements that are scientifically reviewed about evidence and systematically developed to assist in the doctors' and patients' decision making in certain clinical situations." This recommendation aims to promote good clinical practice for the provision of safe and effective practices of conscious sedation in dentistry. Method: The development of this clinical practice guideline was conducted by performing a systematic search of the literature for evidence-based CPGs. Existing guidelines, relevant systematic reviews, policy documents, legislation, or other recommendations were reviewed and appraised. To supplement this information, key questions were formulated by the Guideline Development Group and used as the basis for designing systematic literature search strategies to identify literature that may address these questions. Guideline documents were evaluated through a review of domestic and international databases for the development of a renewing of existing conscious sedation guidelines for dentistry. Clinical practice guidelines were critically appraised for their methodologies using Appraisal of guidelines for research and evaluation (AGREE) II. Results: A total of 12 existing CPGs were included and 13 recommendations were made in a range of general, adult, and pediatric areas. Conclusion: The clinical practice guidelines for conscious sedation will be reviewed in 5 years' time for further updates to reflect significant changes in the field.

문서 말뭉치 기반 질의응답 시스템 (Text Corpus-based Question Answering System)

  • 질의응답시스템을 구축하는데 있어서 사용자 질의로 입력된 자연어 문장을 문법적 또는 의미적으로 완벽하게 분석하는 작업과 그 질의에 대한 정확한 답변을 찾아내는 작업은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 본 논문에서는 질의응답시스템 구축의 난제를 극복하기 위해, 문서 말뭉치에 기반하여 질의문을 자동 생성, 저장하여 이를 키워드로 검색하는 새로운 방식의 시스템을 제안한다. 질의문 생성을 위한 기본 아이디어는 수집 문서의 주요 문장에 대해 고유명사인식 기술을 활용하여 사람, 사물, 장소, 시간 등의 고유명사를 인식한 후, 각 고유명사에 해당하는 자연어 질의문을 생성하는 것이다. 질의문은 두가지 유형인 단순형 및 문장구조유지형 질의문으로 구분한다. 시스템은 이렇게 준비된 질의문 데이터베이스를 가지고 입력된 검색 키워드에 대하여 관련 질의문과 답변을 쉽게 얻을 수 있다. 본 연구의 관건은 생성된 질의문이 명확한 해답을 도출할 수 있는 의미있는 질의문을 생성하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 질의문의 원천이 되는 평서문장을 선별하는 원칙과 선별된 평서문으로부터 의미있는 질의문을 생성하는 방법론을 제시한다.

질의응답 커뮤니티에서 문서 간 이독성 비교 (Comparison of Readability between Documents in the Community Question-Answering)

  • 커뮤니티 질의응답 서비스는 다양한 목적으로 활용되고 있다. 질의응답 문서에서 정보의 품질은 질문의 명확성과 답변 내용의 적절성으로 결정되며 문서의 읽기 쉬운 정도를 나타내는 이독성(readability)은 문서가 가지고 있는 정보의 품질을 평가하기 위한 주요 요소이다. 본 연구의 목적은 국내의 CQA 사이트에서 제공되는 문서의 품질을 측정하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 네이버 지식iN의 '국민 신문고' 커뮤니티의 문서에서 사용된 어휘 수준별 사용 빈도를 비교하고, 작성 기관별 문서의 이독성 지수를 측정하였다. 이독성 지수의 측정은 어휘 수준과 문장 길이를 바탕으로 계산되는 Dale-Chall 공식을 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 답변에서 사용된 어휘는 질문에서 사용된 어휘보다 더 어려운 수준이고 문장 길이도 더 길어서 이독성이 더 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 질의응답간 이독성의 차이는 작성 기관별로도 차이가 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 상담업무에 반영할 수 있는 유용한 정보를 도출하여 온라인상의 민원상담 개선에 활용할 수 있으며, 이독성 지수에 기반하여 문서 수준의 정량적 분석을 시도함으로써 텍스트 마이닝의 주제를 확장할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

전자문서의 영구보존을 위한 표준화 연구 동향 (Understanding the Ongoing Archival Research on the Permanent Preservation of Electronic Records)

  • 전자형태를 띄고 있는 문서와 데이터가 널리 보급됨에 따라 전자문서의 유약성으로 인해 생기는 문제점을 보완하고 이를 영구보존하여 전자문서의 이용을 극대화하려는 다각도의 연구들이 1990년대 이래로 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 이 글은 북미를 중심으로 서구에서 현재 진행되고 있는 전자문서 보존과 이용에 관한 최근 연구동향을 국내에 소개하고 이해하는데 기여하며, 그 중에서 세계적 규모로 진행중인 InterPARES Project의 성과와 특징을 살펴봄으로 전자문서의 영구보존을 위한 개념의 정립과 그 보존에 대한 이해를 돕고, 아울러 한국적 모색을 마련하는 계기를 제공하고자 한다.

수학저널 쓰기학습에서 자기조절학습전략의 양상 (Aspects of Self-Regulated Learning Strategy in mathematical journal writing)

  • 자기조절학습전략은 메타인지적, 인지적, 동기적, 행동적인 전략들을 자율적으로 선택하고 적용하여 학습자가 적극적이고 능동적으로 학습에 참여할 수 있도록 돕는 학습전략이다. 본 연구의 목적은 수학저널 쓰기학습에서 자기조절학습전략의 양상은 어떠한가를 살펴보기 위함에 있다. 수학저널은 총 13문항으로 자기조절학습전략의 하위요소별로 1~2문항씩 구성하였다. 연구의 결과 수학저널에서 메타인지전략은 학습 목표 설정, 문제해결전략탐구, 반성적 사고, 예를 들어 설명하기 등으로 표현되었다. 인지전략은 아이디어간의 구조 파악하기, 위계화하기, 핵심 내용 파악하기 등으로 표현되었다. 동기전략은 학습에 대한 만족감과 불안감, 차후 학습에 대한 자신감과 좌절감 등으로 표현되었다. 이는 수학저널 쓰기학습을 통하여 자기조절학습전략이 활용되고 있으며 효율적이고 성공적인 학습을 돕는다는 점에서 수학 교육학적인 시사점이 있다.

국가 대기정책수립 및 평가를 위한 대기질 모델링 가이드라인 - Part I 일반 사항 - (Air quality modeling guideline for national air policy development and evaluation - Part I General information -)

  • In the Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA) photochemical air pollutants, nitrogenic compound and particulate matters have increased substantially due to mobile sources, power plants and so on. Therefore 'Special Act on Seoul Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement' was enacted on 2003 in order to improve air quality in the SMA. According to the Special Act, Central and local government have developed the state implementation plan(SIP) to reduce air pollutant emissions from various local sources. One of the key elements of the SIP development is the air quality modeling since modeling results can be used to establish emissions control strategies as well as to demonstrate attainment of air quality goals for ozone, particulate matter, and so on. Air quality modeling, therefore, can be usefully utilized to investigate the effects of government's efforts according to control strategies or measures. Using the air quality model, we can determine whether the implementation plan should be revised or not. A number of questions, however, has been raised concerning accuracy, consistency and transparency of modeling results because if we do not trust modeling results, all the measures dependent on modeling becomes in vain. So, without dealing with these questions, we can not guarantee the reliability and utilizability of air quality modeling results. In this study, we tried to establish standard methodology for air quality modeling in order to ensure consistency and transparency of modeling results used in the development and evaluation of national air policy. For this purpose, we established air quality modeling guideline to provide or recommend modeling procedures, vertical and horizontal domains, input data of meteorological and air quality modeling and so on.

Development of a haptic communication system for fashion image experience in a virtual environment

  • The goal of this study was to develop a haptic communication system that can convey the tactile sensation of fashion materials in a virtual environment. In addition, the effectiveness and how realistically the virtual fabric image of this system delivers the tactile sensation of actual fabric was verified. First, a literature review was conducted through which the tactile attributes of fashion materials were defined that would be implemented in the haptic communication system. Then, a questionnaire for evaluating the tactile attributes of fashion materials was developed. Next, a haptic communication system was designed to convey fashion image experiences in a virtual environment, from which a haptic rendering model was suggested. The effectiveness of the haptic communication system was evaluated by verifying user experiences with questions developed through a user evaluation experiment. The validity of the evaluation questions pertaining to the tactile attributes and the effects of the haptic communication system were verified. Factor analysis was conducted to verify the evaluation of the tactile sense attributes of the fashion material, which identified density, thickness, and elasticity of the material as key factors. As a result of comparisons between the tactile sense through haptic characteristics and through touching, it was observed that regarding density and thickness, tactile sense experience led to greater perceived reality, while this was not the case for elasticity.

적극적 노동시장정책의 실업 감소 효과에 관한 연구 (A Study of Active Labor Market Policy and Unemployment : An Analysis Using Fuller-Battese Model)

  • This paper examines the effect of active labor market policy on the unemployment rates in 8 welfare states. This paper focuses on the following questions: what are the major predictors of the changes in unemployment rates?; and what is the effect of active labor market policy in reducing unemployment rates? Using the data from Comparative Welfare States Data Set by Stephens (1997), Key Indicators of the Labour Market by ILO (1999) and Social Expenditure Database by OECD (1999), this paper attempts to answer the above research questions. Fuller-Battese model, a data analysis method in pooled cross-sectional time-series analysis, is adopted to identify variables predicting changes in unemployment rates. This paper analyzes the predictors by using 3 analysis models about 2 types of unemployment (overall unemployment and long term unemployment). Results are as follows: (1) economic variable such as changes in GDP has a positive effect in reducing unemployment rates; (2) active labor market policy has a positive effect in reducing unemployment rates as well; (3) job brokering service among 3 major active labor market programs has a positive effect in reducing unemployment rates; and (4) there is an interaction effect between unemployment benefit level and active labor market policy in reducing unemployment rates. Through the empirical analysis, this paper provides valuable knowledge about effects of active labor market policy on unemployment in 8 welfare states and discusses implications for the active labor market policy in Korea.

장기요양시설 인간중심 치매케어 온라인 교육 프로그램 개발을 위한 델파이 조사연구 (A Delphi Study for Developing a Person-centered Dementia Care Online Education Program in Long-term Care Facilities)

  • Purpose: There has been a growing recognition that person-centered care enhances the quality of life of nursing home residents with dementia. This study was conducted to develop a person-centered dementia care online education program for direct care staff in long-term care facilities. Methods: Delphi method with expert group was used to validate contents. We developed 61 draft items based on literature review. Twenty experts participated in consecutive three round surveys including 5-point Likert scale questions and open-ended questions. Based on experts' opinions, the content validity ratio for content validity and the coefficient of variation for stability were calculated. Results: Three-round Delphi surveys and additional feedback from the expert panel established a consensus of core contents: 1) dementia (7 categories), 2) person-centered care (6 categories), 3) communication (8 categories), and 4) behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (6 categories). Specific sub-categories in each category were differentiated according to the job qualifications (65 sub-categories for registered nurses, 64 sub-categories for nursing aids, and 41 sub-categories for personal care workers). Conclusion: This delphi study identified person-centered dementia education curricula, in which the person-centered approach should be a key policy priority in Korean long-term care system. Now it is urgently needed to develop education programs utilizing online platforms that enable efficient and continuous learning for long-term care staff, which can contribute to behavior changes in the person-centered dementia care approach and improvement of care quality in long-term care facilities.
