  • In this paper a new algorithm of learning and evolving artificial neural networks using gene expression programming (GEP) is presented. Compared with other traditional algorithms, this new algorithm has more advantages in self-learning and self-organizing, and can find optimal solutions of artificial neural networks more efficiently and elegantly. Simulation experiments show that the algorithm of evolving weights or thresholds can easily find the perfect architecture of artificial neural networks, and obviously improves previous traditional evolving methods of artificial neural networks because the GEP algorithm imitates the evolution of the natural neural system of biology according to genotype schemes of biology to crossover and mutate the genes or chromosomes to generate the next generation, and the optimal architecture of artificial neural networks with evolved weights or thresholds is finally achieved.

  • As one of the serial faunistic studies on the brackish cyclopoids from Korea, taxonomic accounts of three species of Halicyclops from various brackish waters in South Korea are provided, with detailed illustrations of them: H. uncus Ueda and Nagai, 2009, H. setiformis Ueda and Nagai, 2012, and H. itohi Ueda and Nagai, 2012. Halicyclops uncus is newly recorded from Korea, and the latter two species are corrected from H. sinensis sensu Chang, 2009 and H. cf. rotundipes sensu Chang, 2009, respectively. As a result, a total of seven species of the genus are now recognized in Korea, and a revised key to the species is presented.

  • The Zopheridae Solier consisting of members from three previous families, Zopherinae Solier, Monommatinae Blanchard and Colydiinae Erichson, is considered the taxonomically most challenging group, and comprises more than 1,700 described species worldwide. The members of Zopheridae represent diverse morphological variations, and are difficult to separate morphologically from other tenebrionoid families. Two Zopheridae genera, Colobicus Latreille and Lasconotus Erichson, are identified for the first time in Korea, and two wood-boring species, C. hirtus (Rossi) and L. niponicus (Lewis), are newly reported in the Korean fauna. A key to the genera of Korean Zopheridae, and diagnoses, habitus photographs, and illustrations of diagnostic characters of the two species are provided.

  • In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of key-hole geometry during high-energy density laser welding process. Unsteady phase-change heat transfer and fluid flow with the surface tension and recoil pressure are simulated. To model the overheated surface temperature and recoil pressure considering subsonic/sonic vapor flow, the one-dimensional vaporization models proposed by Ganesh and Knight are coupled over liquid-vapor interface. It is shown that the present model predicts well both the vaporization physics and the fluid flow in the thin liquid layer over the other model.

  • A numerical system to extract effective elastic properties of polycrystalline thin-films for MEMS devices is developed. In this system, the statistical model based on lattice system is used for modeling the microstructure evolution simulation and the key kinetics parameters of given micrograph, grain distributions and deposition process can be extracted by inverse method proposed in the system. In this work, effects of kinetics parameters on the extraction of effective elastic properties of polycrystalline thin-films are studied by using statistical method. Effects of the fraction of the potential site($f_p$) among the parameters for deposition process of microstructure on the extraction of effective elastic properties of polycrystalline thin-films are investigated. For this research, polysilicon is applied to this system as the polycrystalline thin-films.

  • A newly recorded species of gammaridean amphipod, Cryptodius kelleri (Br$\ddot{u}$ggen, 1907) belonging to the family Odiidae Coleman and Barnard, 1991 collected from the east coastal area of Korea. Cryptodius kelleri (Br$\ddot{u}$ggen) is characterized by the medially expanded maxillipedal palp article 2, smooth dorsal pereonites, propodochelate gnathopod 1, subchelate gnathopod 2, lacking the posterior process on the basis of pereopods 5-7, dorsal carination of pleonite 3, posterolateral upturned process of pleonite 3, and an entire telson. The species is described and fully illustrated in the present study. A key is also provided to the species of genus Cryptodius. This is the first record of the family Odiidae from Korea.

  • A new gastrotrich species of the genus Crasiella (Planodasyidae) is described from the sublittoral sandy bottom of Jeju Island, South Korea. The family Planodasyidae and the genus Crasiella are recorded for the first time from East Asia. Crasiella clauseni n. sp. differs from its congeneric species by the combination of characters: absence of cephalic sensory pits; unseparated arrangement of anterior tubes and ventrolateral tubes, comprising about 120 adhesive tubes along whole body length; 5-7 horizontal rows of adhesive tubes and a pair of TbV in the anterior part of pharyngeal region; bifid pedicles with 8-11 posterior adhesive tubes; and tube-shaped seminal receptacle and copulatory organ. This paper deals with description of the new species, and provides a key to the species of genus Crasiella.

  • Flies of the genus Scatella are small and dark-gray, and many species have distinctive whitish spots on their gray wings. Most species are found in damp environment, such as the borders of marshes, seashore areas, swamps, lakes, ponds, streams, and paddy fields. The Korean shore fly genus Scatella Robineau-Desvoidy has been taxonomically noted. A total of five species have been identified: S. calida Matsumura, 1915, S. nipponica Miyagi, 1977, S. obsoleta Loew, 1861, S. paludum (Meigen, 1830), and S. tenuicosta Collin, 1930. This is the first report of S. calida Matsumura, 1915 from Korea. A key to the Korean Scatella species and photographs of the external features have been provided.
